Trump Wants To Beef Up The Military, But Recruiters Are Having Trouble Finding People (HBO)

Donald Trump wants a bigger army. Much bigger. For recruiters, that means a hard job just got harder.
This year's target has been set to 80,000 recruits, up from 68,000 the year before, and the edict comes at a low point for recruitment enthusiasm. Low unemployment rates have made the Army less appealing for young people, as have more than 15 years of war in Afghanistan and Iraq. To make matters worse, a rise in obesity rates means that only some of the young people who are interested in enlisting in the armed forces can even qualify.
So the Army is looking inward, reforming itself to make the prospect of serving more attractive. These initiatives include increasing bonuses, allowing more waivers for people who have used marijuana, and helping potential recruits to lose weight.
Elle Reeve visited Fort Knox to see how recruiters are adapting to their new mission.

VICE News instead of reuploading videos to thow out the like/dislike ratios, listen to feedback. Instead of convincing yourselves that your detractors are all alt-right or bigots, Russian bots, or triggered conservatives, spend time trying to understand how even left-leaning people like me think you've gone off the ideological deep end. It's really easy to see all this negativity as more proof you need to fight the Good Fight and to double down on your convictions, and it's hard to see how it could be otherwise, but please try and understand your detractors, don't just label and dismiss us. Productive dialogue is possible between the Progressive part of the left and the rest of the body politic, but only if you come and sit at the table to talk. The Progressive wing of the left isn't large enough to win in the democratic system and the last couple years proves it's slowly running out of political capital. At some point the Progressive left will have to melt your ideological swords into plowshares, to stop treating the rest of the body politic as an enemy to be defeated and rather as the fellow citizens they are. If not the Progressives are going to collapse, and any chance to see the reforms you want will be lost. You don't have to die on this hill, but the first step will be to come back to the village and figure out why the community felt compelled to take up arms against you in the first place.

The answer is true actually. They need more soliders/sailors/airmen for their operations to be successful. The numbers are low. There's more demand for the army than anything before. Depending on your biases (politcal or not) this could look bad for the nation as a whole. Look at this without any political view. There's more demand for military recruits than they can get. This situation just sucks regardless on what side your on.

Maybe instead of the government wasting all their money on useless projects that line the corporations wallets why not increase the acceptance rate for the military. Yup. It was the “rich mans” wallet which was attacked on 9/11. And it is the rich man fighting Islamic forces which deny women rights, beat women for not wearing burqa, take them as sex slaves. See, the rich man is making so much money protecting the people of Afghanistan from radical Islamic fanatics. ~ A person from AFPAK.
@jessiesad7036
@jessiesad7036 3 жыл бұрын
MAC It was also the “rich” mans wallet that triggered most of those events. Afghanistan was very liberal and adapted western policies even more so when the Soviets came in and tried to make it even more liberal and less religiously conservative. It was when Mujahadeen fighters were trained and armed through the “rich” mans wallet that led to the destabilization and civil war of the country allowing for a splinter group(Taliban) to take over and enforce radical islamic ideologies. The war in Afghanistan has been two decades long now and costed several billions of dollars and it isn’t much different than when it was first invaded, socioeconomically speaking. In fact it’s made things worse such as how paying farmers in Afghanistan to destroy their poppy plants led to them growing more to get paid to destroy them. At least Afghanistan got a new president, a former Unacoal advisor. Guess what the first thing he did was. I hope you didn’t guess that it was a Unacoal pipeline or other infrastructures that the “rich” man was invested in that was built through tax payer money. The 9/11 attacks were orchestrated by Al Qaeda not the Taliban, but other countries that hosted Al Qaeda and harbored its leader like America’s sporadic ally, Pakistan never saw an invasion. It was also because of the “rich” mans wallet Iraq was invaded, because there were “supposedly” weapons of mass destruction and they were aiding terrorists. There were no weapons of mass destruction or terrorists, and the most dangerous weapons Iraq possessed were weapons that were acquired through the help of the rich” mans wallet to combat Iran decades ago. So I wonder why Iraq really was invaded. Surely couldn’t have been for oil like it was for the first Iraq invasion. Which by the way was a failure because the oil wells weren’t successfully secured. If Iraq was Rwanda, do you think anything would’ve been done? Oh yeah, what about the new terrorists in Iraq. Because of the power vacuum created in Iraq after its invasion by creating animosity against western ideology(because of the sheer amount of civilian casualties) and replacing the Sunni government with Shia leaders. Those old leaders and ex soldiers went on to create a new group with the training they had possessed. I’ll let you guess what that ones called. All of this at the cost of tax payer money and American casualties for the “rich” mans wallet.

air force not so much. They are at a glace but if you go to their office they are pretty snooty. The contracts suck bc they often dont want to offer the same bonuses as the other branches. Army will offer max bonus for enlisted reserve at an ASVAB of 70 for example. My score was 88 and they couldnt even give me 75% of that. So in the end if you are joining for benefits the air force shoots themselves in the foot because they turn away people who would otherwise join but end up in the navy or army bc those branches tend to give bigger bonuses for the same level of skill.

I scored a 98 on my ASVAB, was in great physical shape (5:15 mile, 80 pushups in a minute, 20 chin ups non stop) and selected 25S Satellite Communications Maintenance Operator as my MOS. I had a 40K sign on bonus for a 5 or 6 year contract and was excited for my future. Then, towards the very end of MEPS, I read a form I was signing saying that the military would find out anything that was on my record, including dismissed charges. This was contrary to what my parents had told me, so I was surprised but I told one of the officers there, and they had me sit aside and call my recruiter. When I was 9 (yes, 9 years god damn old), a 13 year friend of mine and I climbed into the window of my best friends house while he was on vacation with his mom, simply to hangout. My sister told my mother, and my mother called the cops on us. We were both charged with burglary, the other boy's charge sticked because he was a known trouble maker, but mine was dismissed because I had never done anything like that. Keep in mind that all we did was watch TV and play guitar, we had no intent of stealing anything. I did get 40 hours of community service. Anyways, according to the Army, because of this I was a less desirable candidate and wouldn't be able to acquire certain things throughout my military career, such as a Top Secret Clearance, and would always have this incident be considered when I was being looked at for promotions/other positions. I had one recruiter tell me I'd be lucky to be a cook. I also would have to go through a 6 month long process of interviews to determine my character/moral compass and paper work just to get into the military. I consider myself a good person, and I've never done anything illegal outside of that incident. I wasn't going to let the military hold me back because of one mistake I made 12 years ago. So I said screw the military, and went to my local community college where I have a scholarship that covers all my tuition and then some. I am part of the honors society as well as honors program, and am learning useful skills/obtaining a degree and certificates without having to sacrifice my freedom to the military. I wanted to serve in the Army since I was a young boy, but when I made the effort I felt shot down and was forced down a different path, a path I feel is the better choice.

@@michaelh9654 It didn't completely deny me from serving. But I was told that I would certainly never be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance, and it would be more difficult to obtain a Secret clearance. I was much more restricted in my choices; one Army recruiter even told me to start out as a cook and obtain a different MOS after my first term. Another recruiter who specialized in recruits with criminal records told me that there are still plenty of options available, but the process would be longer. I would also have to go through several interviews to determine my integrity. It is the principle of it all for me. I would have liked to join the military but I strive to be the best in whatever I do and don't want to be held back by unfair pre-determined judgements on my integrity based on a stupid mistake when I was 8 or 9.

5 years in, let me be the one to tell you that the bigger problem is keeping them in. The typical 9-5 army day is longer than a 9-5, consists of piss poor leadership belittling soldiers for not being good at a job that they themselves have little to no experience in doing, showing up to work and accomplishing absolutely nothing but meaningless tasks for incompetent and lazy seniors, online/check the block training, under-appreciation, blatant favoritism, barracks life, things of that sort. I could go on forever about why good soldiers get out, most of those reasons stem from bad soldiers who were obviously desperately recruited to just toxic leadership.

Nobody is arguing that most people don't want to die. But the amount of people wanting to be recruited goes up during wars that are seen as worth fighting for (Defensive wars or as a way of getting revenge). You say WWII doesn't count, you say Afghanistan at its beginning doesn't count... I don't know what to say. People weren't happily volunteering for the Korean War but people were (more) willing to go to Afghanistan (at first) and in Asia and Europe in WWII.

To the people saying the Military is a terrible choice, hear me out. My parents were both Sailors of the U.S. Navy, stationed with the 7th Fleet. Both college educated before, during and AFTER the Military. They have amazing benefits. My mother had a debilitating thyroid disease where they needed to be removed. The medicine she needs to survive is free for life. My mom's brother and his wife were Marines. They have an amazing security job and a government job respectivly that pays way above minimum wage. They both have college education. None of them ever saw combat even though they all served during the Golf War and some in Iraq. I am not white, but we are all U.S. citizens. Some naturalized, but Im a U.S. citizen born abroad. I am 18. Some College education, and enlisted in the Army. I plan on furthering my education during and afterwords. I have a 35N job in the Army after basic (Look it up). Everyone is different. Everyone's life is different. Dont ruin someone else's aspirations just because of your hate of the government.

Sure there are athletes and people who are good at whatever it is they do, but we have those in uniform as well. Those who would wait for invasion will have waited too long, Those who wait for the government to be shipshape, uncorrupted, and doing perfectly will have a long, long, long wait. Point to a country, any country, at any time in history when government was ideally and efficiently managed. Not going to happen. I got to travel the world and gain perspective on life, but if I had to do it again, knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t have. It doesn’t pay well, and you don’t get treated very well either. If you get injured, you are no longer useful and will get a medical discharge. Go to college, stay out of trouble and you’ll be fine. You don’t need to join the military to have a good life. I see myself dying for the few and for the proud and for all the others that had passed on before me. I don’t respect the politicians unless they themselves had experienced it. I’m sure we both can agree that we don’t respect the government, but I’d rather die fighting for something than die for nothing.

How any informed person with a conscience could enlist is mind-boggling. The military doesn't fight to protect our citizens, but for corporate interests. And few if any of the people who send brave young men and women into harms way would allow THEIR sons and daughters to see the front lines. Marine Corps Gen. Smedley Butler stated all of this decades ago in his "War Is A Racket" piece.

Smedley Butler's "War is a Racket" was written during a very specific time (the so-called 'imperialist age' of American foreign policy) when the US overtly intervened in support of banana companies (banana wars, which Butler was actively involved in) and sugar plantations. This really isn't that much of the case anymore. Like, sure, the overthrow of Iraq in Operation Ajax and the Guatemalan coup were caused by oil and fruit interests, but Eisenhower didn't authorize them for that reason. Most conflicts since WW2 have objectively not been about resources or corporate interests. Sure, there is the Iraq war, but that's mostly an outlier for the most part. Also, re: sending people abroad: multiple US presidents, the current US president's son, and even Prince Harry of the UK all have served in the military in active duty warzones. I just felt like replying because people seem to blindly say "Smedley Butler 'War is a Racket'" without appreciating the different foreign policy and world that existed then vs now.

Such a claim doesn't even make sense when you look at the evidence.

Like, you can talk about what Johnny Harris did in his video "Here's who really won the War in Afghanistan", but again, that had to do with war profiteering (especially by the MIC) from the implementation of the occupation, not the reason for the war or its goal/motivation.

Thats not unique to the US army. You could serve in the Canadian Forces where we only just recently boosted the budget from a paltry $16 billion and still get paid %50 more. Or better yet, serve in the Australian Defence Force and get paid even more on top of that! Both of whom pay for schooling. Point being that the US military cuts costs where it's most important. With their own damn soldiers. You know, the ones out there actually risking their lives. Better paid soldiers make for a better fighting force and every other developed nation seems to acknowledge that except for the US, which is ironic, considering how much they exalt their own troops.

Unless you're deployed to a combat zone, then you're at work 24/7, and you can't really leave the military until your contract is up. But in general, it does have it's ups and downs.

I’m not going to lie, the Army was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life. The Army also did a lot of things that had pissed me off and my experience in the Washington state National Guard has been worse. I remember 9/11. I was in elementary school at the time. Fast forward 10 years and I was deployed with 1st ID and Bin Laden was killed that year while I was in country. My favorite times in the military was when I was deployed and I even re-enlisted to chase another deployment with a different unit and since I left active duty service I’ve served as a contractor overseas. I will say that over the years since 2011 I don’t know why we’re still in Afghanistan. There are good people in that country sure but the reality is that doesn’t go for the majority. They’re tribal people that will never come together to form one singular nation because of petty differences. They’ll never be a United strong nation because they don’t care and they don’t want it bad enough. I want my friends to stop having to risk their lives for a country where it’s people don’t give a shit about anything and I think the country has started to realize this war that is approaching 2 decades has become pointless and even the most patriotic Americans that are 100% behind our troops realize the sacrifices made by our men and woman are becoming pointless. The only thing left to fight for over there is each other.

Scott Cinsey. Let me start off first by saying that my Platoon in Guard was one of the best Platoons I’ve ever been assigned to. Never in my life did I think I would say that about the Guard. However, I joined the Guard immediately after leaving active duty in the summer of 2015. I spent about 5 months with the unit before I found a job as a contractor overseas and to go to an Inactive drilling status in order to go. During my first initial 5 months I was never issued any gear. When I did train I had to beg, barrow or use civilian gear in order to sustain myself out in the field as well as sustain myself when I volunteered to fight wild fires in Washington state that summer of 2015. Let’s fast forward a year to my return from employment overseas to November of 2016. I came home around Thanksgiving and then in the beginning of December of 16 I informed my unit that I had returned and was ready to come back to the unit. It took from December of 16 until August of 2017 for me to finally get orders bringing me back to active drilling status with the unit. All because of me....I was the one that kept calling and following up. Apparently paperwork kept getting lost or people wouldn’t send things up to next highest level but eventually I returned. From August of 2017 it took until April of 2018 to finally receive equipment. By that time I had decided I was done. I had done numerous training exercises in rain, wind, and snow without gear other then things that I went out and bought with my own money to survive in the field. I remember doing a machine gun range at the Yakima training center in March in civilian rain gear and being asked by a Sergeant Major why I was wearing civilian gear. When I told him my unit hasn’t issued me gear his response was, “oh somebody has failed you Sergeant.” It’s now July 2018 and I just got done with my last training exercise with my guard unit last month when we went back to Yakima for 3 weeks on Annual Training. 3 weeks without gear because when they did finally issues it to me back in April I had to return it back to the unit in May. 3 weeks of losing money because even as an E5 the army does not pay me as well as my civilian job. 3 weeks of sitting in a barracks going to the gym and watching the World Cup losing money all because the commander wanted his numbers to look good. I didn’t train with the guys, I didn’t do anything productive for the unit, I lost money, I spent time away from family and for what? Nothing. I did nothing while I was there. Overall the Guard at least here in Washington State was a waste of my time and money. There’s the elaboration for you. Sorry about writing you a small book.

@Ben Schweitzer: True, I see many parallels to the US. It's interesting to see that the US seems to suffer similar effects. A corrupt political system which primarily serves the rich, huge economic dependence from foreign places/ countries (China, Middle-East), overstretched and extremely costly military which can't deal with asymmetrical warfare efficiently (Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq). This culminates in a visible decline of power.

I was a C student. A jock and that's it. I wasn't stupid I just didn't care. I never thought about my future I lived in the moment. At 16 I did not have a car. My parents were more than capable of buying me one but my father said no. So, I called a recruiter and on my 17th birthday I enlisted in the Army Reserve so I could get $300/mo to buy a car. I went to basic between my Jr-Sr highschool years. Although I was an accomplished athlete I think I finally found inspiration. I wanted to be a helicopter pilot and although this story does not end with that achievement due to injury I had a desire to do something no one I knew was doing. The problem, I screwed around too much and did not have the grades to go to aeronautical school. So, I applied to 1 college..a military academy. It was hard especially for a kid who never cared about schoolwork. Over 2 years I continued to wrestle at the collegiate level but the majority of my time was spent learning to study. I basically had to reprogram my brain to care about my education. After 2 years I was commissioned as a 2LT and transferred to the National Guard while I pursued my bachelor's degree at Penn State who wouldn't have given me the time of day before the military academy. I graduated with honors and #2 in my class. From there I went on to retire from the Army as a Infantry Operations Officer just a few credits short of a PhD. In total I owed about $2,000 in tuition after 7 years of education. I now work in state government where everyone takes me seriously. I often wonder what they would think of me if they knew what I was like when I was younger. Honestly, the Army didn't save me as I would have figured something out but it gave me direction and a purpose. I sit here today as a disabled vet, combat vet, various achievements to include a bronze star. I collect a pension in my 30s while I work towards another pension. My 16 year old self would have never imagined this. If it wasn't for the Army I'd likely have 20 years seniority in a factory and while that's a necessary occupation I don't think I would be happy today if the spark lit to do something bigger than myself and I had no options. For anyone who thinks your military service is just good while you are in I am evidence that it is a major step in setting you up for future success in life. Even if you do 4 and out maybe you'll find some motivations in life you never knew you had. Oh, I did get accepted to flight school and while I was awaiting school to begin I got the call to deploy and unfortunately was injured. It happens... get back up and keep going.

There is a need for infantry but Special Operations Forces won't get taken out by large numbers of infantry that's not usually how it works, they aren't just sent to kill 1000 infantry soldiers from the enemy army. Special Operations Forces do specific things

Jonathan C. Killing isn't fun, it's a regretfully necessary action undertaken for the safety of millions of people when you're in the military. People who enjoy killing are generally the ones who don't make it back because once they leave the warzone they can no longer satisfy their desire to kill and end up eating their own gun. If they manage not to kill themselves then you get ticking time bombs like Timothy McVeigh, whose racist ideology was nursed in the bosom of my very own Buffalo metropolitan area.

Well there's a couple reasons people arent joining. We haven't been in a major war in decades, bootcamp sucks, girls don't wanna be sexually harassed, guys dont wanna die or end up with ptsd, people can actually make a living via unlikely jobs: rideshare, streaming, content creation, etc. This is outside of other jobs that are upping their benefits. Hell even Amazon gives full benefits nowadays and even gives you a $3k sign on bonus. All that sounds way better than war. But if you wanna know a secret. Come closer military recruiters. The real reason people arent enrolling is because no one wants to SHOWER NAKED INFRONT OF A BUNCH OF OTHER DUDES. Why is that even a thing????? Thats fuckin weird. I can't understand how people justify that. Just use stalls like normal people. Im pretty sure even in war you and your troops find secluded shitting/showering areas to give each other the smalllest bit of privacy. I mean cmon. You're soldiers not savages.

They're having trouble. Because the incentives are gone. The U.S military is going downhill. It's not how it used to be. It's changed, and not for the better. Everyone just cares about themselves noe. They don't care about soldiers. If they did i would have a new fridge in my barracks room. I've waited 2 years for a new fridge. And I can't even get one. We have town hall meetings to "discuss" housing issues and conditions on post. But nothing every changes. Its been 5 years for me at Fort Campbell. This place is a shit hole. Black mold is everywhere in the barracks. And they just replace ceiling tiles. Thats covering up the actual problem. Its caused by leaking pipes in the buildings. But the Army is too cheap to fix anything. Maybe one day the Army will get better, but at this point, but I don't see that happening in my lifetime. ETS 2 months.

@Betancourtdm
@Betancourtdm 6 жыл бұрын
I'm very curious why an E-1 would need to apply for food stamps. As an E-1 they are within their first 9 months of service (Navy) which means they are in boot camp or their schooling pipeline. During that time they are provide free housing in a barracks and free food at the galley. Also, they will have zero medical bills, extremely cheap life insurance any many discounts available at the exchange and out in town. With all this, the $1638 they make in pay per month is simply discretionary income. As E-1 might not be realistic, lets take a married E-4 for example... making about $2490 a month for basic pay, $2445 a month in housing allowance tax free based on San Diego numbers ($4935 total/$59220 a year not counting other compensation), still getting free food for the servicemember while at work or on deployment, virtually nothing paid for health care for their family, still getting cheap life insurance for them and their family, all discounts available... why again would they need to be on food stamps? I appreciate your opinion but I have never encountered a service member on food stamps in my 16 years in the Navy. If a Sailor is having extreme financial hardships for some reason we provide them with financial counseling and then we try to find resources such as the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society to provide interest free loans or grants in emergency situations. As @JadenPatrics stated, a person needing food stamps has an extreme problem that is far outside the norm.

Yea, I do. In my state, there was an article some time ago about it. If someone is an E1 with a large family, it makes sense. When my husband was an E1, we struggled with our combined pay with all the bills we had, and we lived off base. My husband had to go through basic and training for his administrative job, but he was a once a month warrior. We never was on stamps, but we struggled. His pay was never enough. It was just the 2 of us, and no children. But the article referred to full enlisted men/women.

And It won't affect job performance as long as it's not used before work or something stupid like that. I could see if someone was denied for using it daily because they need mental counseling like an alcoholic would. But otherwise, preventing them from joining is a thousand more ppl turned away that could help manning issues.

Exactly... That statement was very misleading; they're not necessarily lowering standards, they're just adjusting them.

@@aizengenesis3761 "your cognitive ability basically gets better" that's called growing. The human brain is not finished developing before about 25 years old, and there's a huge amount of growth from 19-25. You're attributing benefits to weed that are actually natural human development.

Joined USAF- Had bad leadership plenty of times but that exists in the civilian world tenfold... Traveled to Italy and lived there for two years. I saw most of Europe. Joined Air Force so I was practically handed an AS degree for two different jobs I did while I was in. Ended up with three AS degrees and a BA degree for free. Got to look back on the fact I served and be proud. I don't know about other branches because I hear they really suck. But all in all I'm glad I joined the Air Force. People think about all these irrelevant big wars for oil talk. Statistically few ppl in the service ever saw combat. Just shut your trap.

Go officer, you'll make that fairly quickly. Also, if they were to pay everyone 100k off the bat, you'd have people crying about paying significantly higher taxes. You can't have it both ways. Lol.
