Panama Canal is under control of China. A problem with the canal, is it depends on a high enough water level in freshwater Gatún Lake which connects to the Atlantic side and Pacific side; they use some of this fresh water for each trip through the canal. Fresh water levels are now dangerously low impacting the number of ships per day which can pass. Jimmy Carter gave control away to the Chinese in 1977. Had he not done so, I believe Panama would have regained control in 2000 anyway as per the 100 year old treaty. Also, Mexico (if they can get it built) has a plan to build a train across Mexico which would take containers coast to coast performing the same functionality as a Panama Canal. If they built that, the canal becomes less valuable. If the fresh water level drops too much, the canal becomes less valuable.
@willisskull26764 күн бұрын
Very well informed. Thank you for posting.
@pietromaximov68383 күн бұрын
I love how you mix up the issues, to begin with the levels of the Gatun and Alajuela lakes, they are not "extremely low" in fact they are at optimal levels. Second, I find it curious that you mention the Mexico train and forget that Panama already has a train that does that. Third, the Chinese do not control the channel, the Panamanians do, yes I know that in your head it is something impossible to believe, but that is the truth.

@@pietromaximov6838 Facts, the chinese have nothing to do with the canal. We have strong relationships with both the US and China but neither are in "control" of the canal. If anything the US has much more say on topics involving the canal than any other foreign country.

Trump supporter here. Here's the issue with how the Panama Canal was built. The country of Panama did not exist, until we (the USA) wanted to build that canal in what was then Colombia in the early 1900s. That entire region (country) currently known as Panama was actually a part of the country of Colombia. But I believe it was President Teddy Roosevelt using big-stick 'diplomacy' forced Colombia to give up that land and separate into just the part that is in the South American land mass, but with the part of the Colombian land mass that extended into Central America be its own new nation called Panama. The USA then proceeded to construct the Panama Canal in the newly created and annexed 'independent' nation of Panama. The thing is, we exerted bullying tactics to force a sovereign nation to relinquish a large portion of its land...created a new nation...and then proceeded to excavate a massive canal hole from the Atlantic end of that nation, slicing through the nations jungles until we reached the Pacific end of that new nation, and allowed that entire excavated area to be flooded with ocean water from both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and controlled the passage of ships through that canal. Trying to force Panama to relinquish something on their own land, that although we built, we did so under nefarious circumstances in the first place, is a bit too imperialistic, if not extremely awkward. Anyway, I have no problem if we were able to annex Canada, and break up that country into multiple states, and also acquire Greenland from the country of Denmark...🤣

You all need to educate yourselves on the history of the canal. By the 1970's, due to poor American management, it was losing money as the costs of maintaining it were far above fees collected and its importance was lessened considerably. Several attempts were made by Congress to return the canal to Panama before President Carter finally reached an agreement. Carter did not sell it for $1, that figure is mentioned nowhere in the agreement to return the canal to Panama. Panama is a sovereign country, just like we are and just like Ukraine. The canal and the land around it is Panama. Panama recently expanded the locks at a cost of $5 billion. The fees it charges are reflective of what it costs to maintain the canal, everyone pays the same fee. The only way the US takes control of the canal would be an invasion of a peaceful sovereign nation. That is not going to happen.If it does, we are another Russia invading an Ukraine. There will be a lot of bloodshed and most likely the defense of Panama by other nations in the hemisphere. We would be at war with all our neighbors. Great idea MAGA, such peace loving people!!!

Greenland has been inhabited by Norse people for 1000 years. It originally belonged to Norway but then Denmark took control of it in the 1700s. There are two ethnicities there Norse and Inuit. However most of the Inuit people there have some Norse ancestry. People in Greenland definitely feel close ties to Denmark and will be upset to be given over to a foreign country who wants to exploit them for their natural resources.
@samuelandrews38293 күн бұрын
Right now Denmark doesn't have the resources to utilize Greenland's natural resources. But that doesn't mean they have no interest in keeping Greenland. In the future they may save up enough money to utilize it. I hope they sell it to us but i doubt they will.

I do not think Denmark would ever sell Greenland. The Danish people have too much respect for the people living there, it would be like selling a population as an item of goods. If it would ever happen, would it be the population on Greenland who decides to be a part of America and any money would only be as a compensation for loss to Denmark.

They could have a plebiscite and vote to join US.
@friedmule54034 күн бұрын
@@simonbagel Hmm, maybe, but they do more work like a separate state under Denmark, so I am not sure if they can just make a vote.
@simonbagel4 күн бұрын
@friedmule5403 probably not much upside to Greenland to become a US State. If they still had the same autonomy as they do currently it may be more attractive to be under the protection of a superpower instead of Denmark
@friedmule54034 күн бұрын
@@simonbagel You are right, but Greenland is under protection from NATO, including the US. Denmark has not been attacked since WWII and I imagine Greenland hasn't for fare longer, this may change if US took over so near Russia. What I would be concerned about is all the drilling, digging and so on, that have to destroy the areas. On the other hand, do I think you could let them dig for 100 years and not be able to find a trace of it. Greenland is huge.

U.S didn’t own it in the first place. It was a lease with Panama to run the zone, it epired and Panama had the legal right to take it back. The lease expired and Carter was obligated to give it back. Same reason why U.K had to give back Hong Kong. Sometimes Trump is a blow hard and does say stupid stuff. Most of the time it is just tung and cheek.

@harryrobinson260 Honestly who would care if they did? It wouldn't affect America 1 bit to get rid of that Lucifer statue That being said there is major national security measures that come into play if Panama wants to cozy up with America's enemies by allowing them to get involved too heavily in the Panama Canal. At that point yes, it was a gift to Panama but American has a duty to take back that gift to protect itself. State of Liberty is just a statue. Big difference my guy
