Full disclosure: I'm generally not a fan of zoos or Trump, but I have to admit he actually sounds reasonable here. I never understood why this turned out this way. I would think these animals have handlers, who have relationships with them, and one of them should have been able to help Harambe navigate the situation. He seemed to understand the gravity of the situation, but confused as to what to do. Contrary to social media culture, I'm not here to pass judgment on the mother (kids that age are mobile and curious, and things happen fast) or the zoo. I'm just genuinely mystified why they couldn't have saved both the kid and the gorilla. Hopefully this situation has informed better contingency plans in the intervening years.

Effects are not immediate. Some animals can act sporadically and severe in the time between being hit with the tranq and getting knocked out. It is possible he would've hurt or killed the child in this time gap.

Well... Gorillas aren't that emotional about death. I remember a case from the Prague Zoo when a "teenage" gorilla named Tatu hung on a loose rope. Due to camera failure in this section of the zoo the zoo keepers did not find him until about half an hour (unfortunately dead). The gorilla family certainly did not behave as if nothing had happened and everyone was sad, but a few hours later they had no problem eating to their fullness. The next day they behaved quite normally. There are 2 options. Either gorilla emotions are relatively weak against ours. Or because they are still wild animals and die relatively often in the wild (predators, diseases, poisons ...) they simply perceive death as much more normal than humans and are better adapted to overcome it.
