Really great teaching. Larry you are absolutely correct about the muscles emphasis and coordination. I've been working with another teacher, great player, who's been emphasizing the air and this will put it all together. Thanks man! PS I bought the book just now and plan to dive in.

Theo Bookey I am not discounting the exercises that my friend Terry has developed. I am just adding to the mix and exercise that is more practical in that it uses the actual muscles in gripping the mouthpiece and compressing the air. two words,,.. try it

Theo Bookey I have the PETE this exercise is better

I do know all of that....and many have had the same instruction. Just like Maurice......talent is one thing, but a gift from God is another. It's one thing to blow some high notes, but he had bebop lines developed, plus the chops. Just a gift.

every great high note player has air pockets . the muscles of the face must be free to resist and compress the air.

bill i would invite you to lunch for that comment; you dont know however that he studied at a Conservatory in Paris at a very early age, his mother, also a musician wanted him to study there. Definitely by 13 somebody gave Maynard aka Walter (Maynard is his middle name) the correct path to trumpet playing, his natural god given talent was there but somebody blessed him with a correct teaching; so yes the talent was there but a lot of teaching was there too;
@Djsolaur11 жыл бұрын
this really works... Im new at the trumpet so Im still learning the bare basics of everything but I can feel ALOT of pressure in my chops when I do this I figure why not give it a shot so I can play higher faster when I do get an actual trumpet all I have is a mouthpiece right now thanks for sharing this technique!
@bmaniac111 жыл бұрын
How did Maynard have that developed by 13 years old, without anyone telling him all of this? I think he just had a gift from god.
@epicsymphonicvistas11 жыл бұрын
Thank you for explaining it in a logical and nonsensical way. I see too many stupid videos of high notes.
@robertsolo605711 жыл бұрын
no doubt no doubt others had the same instruction and could not take it to it's greatest height, that's why he was and always will be the man!

Jerry Kroth You got fatigued.. Trumpet players believe that magic will cure their chops.. If you joined a Gym would you expect to be Arnold Swartzenager in 3 days???

You must not exercise in a weightlifting fashion! Go at it easy.. try changing tension as if you were playing a low c ,middle c then high c and repeat .. keep the muscles relaxed!

Hey y'all. It's easy for some and difficult for others. Do what you can and don't ram that thing in your face. Maynard has talked about the 5 minuet monster. He will tell us to stop pushing the mouthpiece in and instead push the lips into the mouthpiece. The rest is massive muscle strength in the all areas of the body to do what he and others can do. Maynard also can be heard saying the words natural talent. Yep that happens but there is more to playing the trumpet than being a screamer. As with all things creative, master the fundamentals. Then Grasshopper, climb on up the notes with discipline.
@pauldance73876 жыл бұрын
james barnes true but powerful chops helps embrace the fundamentals much easier....endurance and upper range is what the new horn player needs, he’ll find the fundamentals on the other side of that.

Hey Larry...you still around here on KZbin? It's almost 6 years later. Anyway, I have a few questions I'd like to ask you if I get a reply. But for now, how the HECK did you make that extremely high squeal (an F over dbl high C!!) at 1:30 by just pressing a couple of fingers against your lips? Woa! Never seen anybody do this. (You didn't have one of them trick 'buzzers' between your fingers did ya?) It reinforces my belief that those players who can hit those high notes are first & foremost born with lip, facial musculature, teeth, jaw & throat shape/characteristics that just naturally lend themselves to resonating high frequencies through a small round metal bowl. But hey man, I'm just bitter. I flushed out of grad school as a trumpet major back in the 80's. Orchestral/wind ensemble focus. Had good technique, but no endurance or range. But just ONCE...just ONCE I'd like to bust out a G over high C! Not the dbl G, just the one 4 leger lines above the staff. Bust if loud and SIT on the MoFro like a boss! I've tried everything over the years, except building the obicularis & bucinator muscles up and dealing with the concept of resistance and aperture size. (Doh!) Can you help me? I'll go check out your website now & see what's going on there. In the mean time, darn you, 'cause now I'm gonna be sittin' around trying to squeal by just buzzing my lips against my fingers! LOL!

Your videos are raw and unpolished.... and I oddly informative. The first understandable explanation about Maynards unfurled lip embouchure I've ever encountered. AND (in one of your other videos) the first time I understood the pencil exercise when putting the pencil between the teeth instead of between the lips! THANK YOU!!! unfortunately it's too late to go try it out on the horn tonight!

***** Thank You Mathew! It's is raw and unpolished because Its the real thing and what you see is what you get.. Im available for questions on facebook. I also give lessons for as little or as much as you would like to pay.
