I remember hearing as a kid that the Chinook's two rotors were initially mounted level to each other, and it was intended to have them perfectly synced. But after several accidents involving the rotor blades colliding, they changed the design to have the rear rotor mounted above the front.

Sounds nasty! We had a Chinook flying near the shop during the recent airshow. Loud suckers.

I was Air Assault for 19 of my 24 years in the Army. We split out time between Chinook ("shithooks") and Blackhawks. The Chinook was a massive chopper. If you had any loose teeth, the vibration of this behemoth would shake them out of your mouth. I had been told by several Chinook pilots that if you stayed in and did your 20's you were guaranteed disability for c-spine damage. Although it is not used in an offensive role, many times there is a gunner in the rear door with a tripod mounted M2 .50 cal. There was always one when we were in Iraq.

Having two sets of counter rotating rotors allows it to be stabilized unlike say a Huey has a smaller vertical rotor in the rear to prevent the helicopter itself from spinning.

How is the instruction on this build. I just finished the ASLAV PC, and it was the worst instruction of all time. I don't know how many times I wanted to throw the model against the wall.
