I start stripping the paint and do a minor repair to the trunk lid.

If you're not doing restoration for a Living , you can't beat HF tools for the price. You're making Good Progress. you've come a Long way so far. The Paint Decision Is always a tough call. I'd say Go for It. If it comes out great you'll have the *Total* satisfaction of Accomplishment. "Keep Pushin' On" You're New Into is Very Good also.

I definitely want to do the paint myself. I have never touched a welder before this project and I have learned a lot already. The paint will be the same way.

Great to see you back in the garage Rob. You and I are pretty much at the same point in our Midget Resto. When it comes to painting, I am going to do it myself. The satisfaction will be worth the effort. I have to say that the welding has taken me ages but seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now. Not looking forward to stripping the paint. You are doing a fabby job and I always look forward to the next installment.

Yay, Rob’s back on the car! I know you’ve been doing some traveling lately and haven’t had much time to work on your project, but I’m always interested in watching you work. Looks like that Bauer tool makes quick work of stripping paint. I have several Bauer angle grinders and have zero complaints. Don’t you just love finding more rot? When I stripped my car’s hood, I found big holes in its nose that had been stuffed with balls of duct tape and plastered over with body filler. I admire and respect your tenacity to do it all yourself. I would never have the nerve to paint my car.

I am hoping the rest of the pieces are good but I won’t be surprised if I find more holes. I thought you painted your car. I was hoping you were going to give me some good advice.

@@robsrestorationgarage Oh, yeah, that right, I did paint my car. Never mind.

I thought that was right. You were just messing with me!!

@@robsrestorationgarage Uh oh, you’re on to me. Yes, I painted it myself because a fellow I know that was restoring a car once told me that he didn’t want to get to the end where he’d say, “Well, I did all the work myself, but I had someone else paint it.” I’ve never forgotten that.

@@jimkirby3659 I probably need to add a disclaimer to the beginning of each video - “I have no idea what I am doing. Don’t listen to me.” Haha we really need to figure out when I can come over.

a DIY paint job is very doable, even in a garage. it will just take more time than a pro can afford to take is all. dust, dirt and insects will get into each and every coat a light sanding between coats will remove it. the extra time will be in the last coat. as it will need hand sanding and polishing and buffing. but it can come out as good as any professional job. preparation and the use of quality products is paramount. the professionals have expensive booths because they need to make money and time is money. they don't want to have to do the amount and quality of sanding that you will need to do between coats and most importantly the amount of work you'll be doing after the last coat is applied. fifty years ago i painted my mga in a garage that was probably built as a stable for the owner's carriage horse. the amount of dust was enormous. i used my dad's compressor and spray gun. a LOT of wet and dry sandpaper, his electric driil, buffing wheel attachment, and plenty of pink polishing compound. everyone was shocked, including me(!), how well it came out. :)

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Obviously I am going to have more hours in this car than when it was built so I don’t mind the time investment. I believe I can do it plus I will learn a lot.

Rob i painted the inside ,underside and engine bay and inside the boot (trunk on your side of the pond) and paid to have the outside done

That is something to consider. I plan to see how the priming part goes and decide from there.
@hueyhoolihan582 Жыл бұрын
i don't think i would go over it again with finer grit unless you think, and of course i can't make an assessment from the video, the sanding marks are too deep for primer and a skin coat of filler. tooth is a good thing! :)
@robsrestorationgarage Жыл бұрын
You make a good point. I am not sure what the primer will cover. I assume the skim coat will cover quite a bit so maybe I can skip that step.

The more course grit is better for bite. Smooth is not great for bite.
@robsrestorationgarage Жыл бұрын
I agree. The course grit took off material the other really just polished more.

No mask. Adios.
@robsrestorationgarage Жыл бұрын
Haha. I realized how much dust it put off once I started doing it, plus I had the garage door closed. That is why I moved outside and used a mask. I didn’t show that in the video but good observation.
