D...! I gort rid of a handmade archtop guitar..not knowing this years ago.I just purchased a 3 fret leveler. Diamond crowning tool, fret protectors, Fixed two minor fret problems in less then one hour.Someone wolud have charged 100.00 or more for both guitars. The 175 investment paid for itself almost the first day. Incredible videos Stew Mac. will buy some more tools soon.Thanks for the info/tools

@chase4train A lot of things add up to a smooth-operating tuner: your string tension, how worn-out the tuner is, etc. If the tuner has exposed gears, try using Tri-flow lube (found on stewmac.com)

I've seen some complaints about the price of this tool. If it's a guitar that you bought new for a few hundred dollars, then you probably aren't going to want to spend that kind of money to fix it, unless you're very attached to it. On the other hand, if you're playing a guitar worth thousands of dollars, then $250 bucks to fix the truss rod is a hell of a bargain compared to replacing the rod and refinishing the guitar. Also keep in mind that Stew Mac is a major supplier to guitar repair/build shops. So if you're a luthier and you've already got a bunch of expensive shop equipment, a tool like this is a fairly small investment. It will give a luthier/tech the ability to look a distraught guitarist in the eye and say, "Oh, I can fix that. No problem!". This means that even if you're on a budget and playing an off-the-shelf Epiphone from Guitar Barn, and your truss rod nut breaks off, you can take it to a tech who has this tool and he can fix it for you at a cost that should be far, far cheaper than replacing your entire instrument.

You're just another half wit trying to defend highway robbery. Your arguments hold no water. According to you, you would have no problem with someone charging $50.00/ gal of water if your towns water system wasn't working. Give me a break. YOU are a fool!

Stew-Mac does add a huge aup charge on all their stuff. Its virtually all too expensive to justofy buying. BUT I do agree with the original poster here. These tools are for the technician or luthier that needs to knpw when they buy a specific tool, itll prpbably be the only one theyll ever need tp buy. Its not for some random yahoo who looks at one internet video and decides to "fix" their BC roch Bronze Warlock. Also that example of selling water...well it doesnt hold any. Stew Mac isnt selling water. Theyre selling the tool you need to fix the plumbing and you only need to buy that tool one time. Sure, they charge a huge premium and that sucks but thats also capitalism. You are free to not buy the tool or tp buy one elsewhere.

@JYZProductions Erick said this, "It is very difficult to diagose your truss rod issue without having the guitar in my hands to inspect. If I had to guess, it sounds like your truss rod nut might be stripped out. So I suggest taking your guitar to a nearby repair shop for an evaluation. They should be able to identify the issue and offer a solution. Good luck!"

@ofirg32 if the trussrod is weak you may want to just consider getting a replacement neck just for better playability. that way you keep the original neck intact (just not on the body). i have a '71 univox hi flyer that i believe has a broken truss rod. it still works fine (i just know its not perfect, hah). ive been looking for a neck on ebay for a while with no luck.

I have a 1947 Gibson es 350 with a stripped truss rod nut. It was recommended by a luthier that the fretboard would have to be removed at a cost off at least 1000 dollars to complete the repair. The guitar is clean, but not dead mint. This repair would devalue the guitar even more. The 250 buck purchase for this tool might do the trick without a major repair bill/ headache. Might be very well worth it. Hmmm....thanks Dan!

Dan ,love your knowledge and these videos I could watch all day. I have an expensive gibson flying v with trussrod severed flush at the point where it should extend to accept the nut. I have used your technique to help the neck bend flat with help of a carpenters similar to your father's. My fear is this when I flatten out the neck using your helper method just to get a feel for how much the neck will need to move, shouldn't the brokenoff end of the trussrod thrust itself out of the neck some? My rod doesn't seen to move a hair. Could this be evidence of more trouble such as another break in the trussrod somewhere deeper in the neck. I would hate to spend almost 3 bills just to find the trussrod is unfixable

The truss rod in my acoustic won't tighten any further. I'm going to use some lube to see if that solves he problem. But if not, trying a couple of washers might be good but my problem is that the truss rod itself leans to one side, quite close to the side of the wood. Getting washers on might be a problem.

best idea ever. I'm gonna get one. I broke the truss rod on my 12 string and the repairs will cost 400 dollars to fix "the traditional" way. I, using patience and care, could do this myself thus saving 150 dollars. I don't know why my luthier doesn't have one of these. HEY, I BET HE DOES. I need to ask him to do it the NEW and 'correct' way!

Ever find out that some of the buzz from say..your D string at the fifth fret is that that particular frequency is causing other stuff to vibrate...or that the slot in the stoptail bridge doesn't seat the string well, or that in my case, that frequency was causing the bridge pickup to vibrate in it's casing. Well, of course that frequency also happened to make the whole guitar vibrate more more than any other...some tightening and damping of the pickup shut down about 95% of the buzz from it.

Harmonic53 The fuss is about the ridiculous price and fools like you who believe that it is justified. Your comment paraphrased would be; "don't know what all the fuss is about it's only money, you want your guitar fixed, StuMac has you by the balls, Let them squeeze till you drop from the pain then pay them their outrageous price or your left with kindling for the stove." Oh... and after you pay, tell the world on KZbin, or better yet on their web sight, how great they are and how much you love them for over charging you. Anybody who buys tools knows that the price for each of these sets at about $231.00/set is highway robbery. They shouldn't cost more than $50.00/set.

Hi, I wonder if you could clear something up about truss rods. I don't know what a maxed out truss rod means. Does it mean that the nut has screwed down to the end of the threads on the rod or that the nut has screwed down to the end of the threads on the nut so that washers need to be used?

Per the price debate, I will say as a journeyman Ironworker that the right tool at the right time is worth its weight in gold. And if you're making money off of that tool, whether it's for a paycheck or just the satisfaction of not paying someone else do something that you'd like know how to do, it's worth more than that. In my trade, a cheap tool can kill you.

Nut and or saddle slots. Again without having guitar in hand it is hard to tell. Worst case scenario is the neck warped sideways. Sometimes it can be retort steamed the fret board glued back on and pray it stays. Best case, new nut and saddle.

Aluminum is soft. A tungsten carbide cutter would deal metal, and the wood. Finding one? Hmm? I might have a special punch that is made to cut stainless that I have use to do this in the past. I think disassembly is by far the best repair. I just had a nice late 50s Gibson Explorer come in that had this tool used on it, and the headstock popped off. Ouch! Easy fix became a major ordeal. Unless I have the guitar in hand I am not sure exactly what is wrong or can be done.

I have a gibson les paul studio 2016t ebony with gold hardware. When playing, when bending my high E string at the 12th and 14th frets ONLY, I fret out. Meaning, I get no sound on the bend, it dies out. So I thought I would loosen, not tighten the truss rod and when I did this the but started unloosening from the rod, so in essence the guitar can only tighten? Is that right? what am I missing? I can't imagine tightening it up, it would get worse with more frets getting fretted out, please help, thanks,

@fakiirification
@fakiirification 11 жыл бұрын
could be the nut. does it look like the slot for the high e has excessive wear? could also be fret wear at the fret ends, have you leveled and crowned the frets lately? might have rounded the ends too much. or who ever did the work, that is. lol. last thing i can think of, and this is the bad one. sight down the neck and make sure its not twisted or warped to one side or the other. a slight movement can cause the strings to not line up correctly anymore.

The price of this kit would about equal a bargain price on a traditional repair. So it'd cost you less than paying a shop to fix it the hard way. Many repair shops will use this kit, and the cost of having a broken rod repaired at a good shop may come down, as a result. But if you want it to fix other peoples' guitars for a fair wage, consider how many broken rods you've ever been asked to fix in your entire life. I'm wondering how many tension rods have broken in the entire state of my native Minnesota, in the last five years. Ten? Twelve? Twenty? You'll have more business if you stock up on 245 bucks worth of fretting tools. In forty years , I haven't seen a single broken rod come in the door....

Causes of broken tension rods 101... Somebody sat on it , dropped it, or something fell on it. It was bad from the start, like a hairline fracture in the metal. It was improperly over-tensioned. The threaded adjusting barrel became fused to the rod from corrosion. The neck was of poor-quality wood. The guitar was subjected to extremes of temperature and humidity. These last two causes are indirect, as somebody snapped the rod trying to straighten a warped neck. Aim of the comment here, is to remind you how important it is to make certain you know why it broke, before you waste a bunch of time and money trying to fix a bad neck.
