It seems so bizarre that Linus is lacking the self awareness but he’s got a lot of plates to spin in regards to LMG/LTT and considering this is his first controversy it’s legit impressive. I think he’s just struggling to grasp that people don’t trust him. I know the feeling personally but he’s a big company and being transparent with millions of people is going to be difficult.
@TheArsenalgunner28
@TheArsenalgunner28 2 жыл бұрын
@@_marlene I wasn’t aware of that and that sounds awfully out of touch. Again though, can kinda understand the frustration toward it. I mean he started out with just himself, then slowly built his business from the ground up and now pays wages and people don’t to want to pay in the minimum to watch the channel. It’s personal choice and freedom ofc, but it’s immoral imo, but I wouldn’t call it piracy. It’s just kinda dickish
@DarkExternalHeart
@DarkExternalHeart 2 жыл бұрын
@@_marlene i honestly agree with Linus take on that. It differs between different youtubers but some do actually make content in hopes of revenue from ads, and people using addblock are skipping their literal reason for making content. @@JosePineda-jn8jk somehow you forgot the part where youtube fix the problem and youtuber are satisfied enough with the results? Oh wait you don't...
@TheArsenalgunner28
@TheArsenalgunner28 2 жыл бұрын
@@JosePineda-jn8jk I think the main issue was how claims worked. People would instantly claim videos and take the revenue which would go straight to the claimer without a question asked (videos make most revenue in their first week) then when the video has dropped from its peak activity they drop the claim and kept the money. However now they have made it so the money goes into a virtual pot for a while when it is claimed, money doesn’t go anywhere at first and if the claim is contested the claimer has to prove they own the content they are claiming. Still causes problems for smaller channels but for big ones like Linus not so much as they have the power to sue if the claimer doesn’t back down on their false claim. A viewer who openly watches a channel they love whilst using ad block is kinda lame. I upload stuff for fun but say I made a little bit of money and actually room it seriously in hopes of it being a job one day. If it was getting like 20k views at a time or something and everyone watching it used ad block then Im essentially working for free at that point whilst people enjoy the content. Worst part would be if those people then ask in comments ‘please make more’. If the audience hypothetically is using Adblock it makes it unviable to keep uploading.

I would 100% trust LTTstore to replace a defective backpack or honour a refund, but the "trust me bro" warranty is exactly the kind of thing that Linus would absolutely rip a company apart for. Imagine if Apple's warranty was "just trust me bro". Even if they replaced things no-questions-asked, not having it in writing would cause an understandable backlash.
@KoolKammo

I think the difference is that we KNOW apple does stuff that is anti-consumer. Linus started this not as a money maker idea. I guess if there are people who don't know much about LTT or Linus they could misunderstand what he said, but I think that the people who are buying his stuff right now are mostly fans. Apple could care less about their customers and just want the money.
@AlejandroGonzalez-rz3ml
@AlejandroGonzalez-rz3ml 2 жыл бұрын
if apple never did anything anti consumer i don't see why would linus rip them apart for "trust me bro", they would be already doing more than many companies with warranties, when a company says "trust me bro" when there's nothing to trust because they've done the opposite many times then is wortless. but either way i do think he should have a vague warranty for people that think that warranties are worth something, when what's actually worth is if the company is actually willing to do anything or not regardless of warranty. and for people thinking that not honoring warranties can get you on big legal trouble.... you should see more news on the tech world, both current and old news, laws and rules basically mean nothing when you have more money than the ones that try to punish you, at most they can get a meaningless slap on the wrist that is better than stopping being anti consumer.

Yes, this was 100% about the image it sent. We probably all trust LTT to help out, but there is a reason why warranties are mandatory by law most places. A lot of companies would love to avoid responsibilities. And sending the image to consumers that it is OK for companies to not have spelled out warranties before you make a purchase, is TERRIBLE. 40:00 I largely agree with Luke's take on the whole warranty situation. You regularly make the point that corporations aren't your friend, and the previous response was "just trust me, bro." The job I'm in has also cultivated a mindset that forces me to trust no one. So I think the initial response was poor, but it's good that a written warranty is incoming. To say that the swacket is similarly expensive shows that some people don't understand how big a difference $100 is from $300 for some people (especially in this economy - never mind the significant shipping fees for backpack compared to flat cloth). I'd love to get the backpack, but that would be a significant investment for me. The messenger bag I use daily (purchased in 2016) cost a mere $30. I agree that quality>quantity, but quality items should be backed with formal warranty expectations. It's clear that the valid complaints are getting through. Good to see Linus taking it well enough to follow through with improvements.
@StefandeJong1
@StefandeJong1 2 жыл бұрын
Here's the issue though. Linus stated with the "trust me bro" attitude that they "have you covered" for the backpack, and that any problems "as this is a bag for now and 10 years from now" will be taken care of. "But okay, if you REALLY want to, I guess we'll put something on paper, you untrusty viewers...." And proceeds to not cover any "normal wear and tear". LTT has 0 reputation when it comes to backpacks. They can say it's good , but so is a $100 Dakine backpack that has lasted me 10 years without a scratch. But they DO have the reputation to back their warranties. LTTs warranty now just basically only covers manufacturing defects, and for the rest it remains a "trust me bro" attitude from customer service

You can’t take the fact that people don’t trust you personally. It’s more a reflection of how many times they’ve been screwed more than it’s a reflection of your trustworthiness. It’s all but ingrained in people that trusting a company regardless of what they say or do is dangerous. It’s not that people don’t trust you. It’s that we’ve all been taught to never trust anyone especially someone selling something online. It’s basically a subconscious thing for people at this point. So when you do something out of the norm, peoples brains start throwing up red flags. Then those people jump on twitter and then herd mentality kicks in “everyone is mad about it so I’m mad about it!”

If say the backpack zippers break down 3 months late with regular use, anyone should be legally protected to get a refund, repair or replacement. There is no "trust me" with something like this. Every reputable backpack brand selling >200$ bags has multi-year to lifetime warranties. The backpack is a very premium priced product with a giant margin. He can and should support it legally. LTT is no little indie shop selling 50 handmade bags. Their 20k bags are a 5 million $ operation, with multiple millions of that being profit margin.

In Australia, if a company won't honour their returns policy, we can contact a government agency to assist the consumer. There has been cases where companies have been used by that agency for failing to meet reasonable standards. For example, Samsung was ordered to pay a fourteen million dollar penalty for advertising misleading water resistance claims for their phones and then not covering those phones for the resulting water damage.

Lowkey if you have an issue with their warrant it process it proves you haven’t bought or used their store. Is it “consumer friendly” maybe not, but we also forget being a “consumer” means being r-p-d by the person selling goods that we require legal backups to trust anything. Linus is actively pro consumer so damn hard and long it’s kinda funny. Think about it for a second. Why did we invent warranties? Because lack of trust. He hasn’t had one this whole time and actually built trust. Frankly if you wanted a physical warranty you screwed us. Now there’s no negotiating. Because there is a legal process. I’m the end this is worse for anyone who uses it compared to how it worked before hand. Thank you for your concerns.

@@revlouch A warranty does not limit a company. If they want to repair or replace something outside the warranty period they are free to, they just aren't mandated to. So suggesting that a written warranty is somehow worse than no warranty is downright silly. And the big issue with just trusting that Linus will take care of you is that different people have wildly different ideas of what constitutes a reasonable warranty. And without having anything written down it is impossible to actually verify that the warranty covers what you think it should cover. That's part of the reason why written warranties are legally mandated in a lot of countries.
@revlouch
@revlouch 2 жыл бұрын
@@dragonflyK110 it doesn’t. But it opens the door to rubber stamp replacement. My point is the present system builds personal communication and trust and sometimes they toss in extra stuff for the trouble. If you just warranty it. Well you got your product. Congrats. It’s not like you weren’t covered, a small subset of the community who has been conditioned by our shitty overlords in corporations raised question, the cynics posed it. And after Linus was honest and, might I note perfectly reasonable in the moment, until now for the years they have been doing this have gone far above and beyond to try and keep the community taken care of. When he said he felt kinda betrayed I can totally relate. Everyone “calling him out” probably has never tried to use their present support system, or expects the worst in him. Fair, it’s a guy on the internet. But I don’t see you trying nearly as hard to appeal to nearly the size of the demographic. They went this long without one and suddenly it’s a problem? No I think they grew too fast and most of these people haven’t had the time. But the blatant ignorance over the purpose of a warranty is the surprising part. Warranties don’t protect the customer. That’s why there is the wear and tear clause. That leaves it open to interpretation a bit doesn’t it? Just saying. Warranty’s aren’t the white knight. And honestly I’m sad they will no longer be able to go off of trust like they have. It’s more impressive that way wouldn’t you agree? But slowly the community is forcing them to act more and more like a proper company. Someday everyone will cry about the days when it was less so. They already do. Step back and consider that and I’m sure you’ll see my point.
@revlouch
@revlouch 2 жыл бұрын
@@dragonflyK110 as you said, most countries require it. So as well most countries have native applied warranty terms the company doesn’t need to outline. If a company has an outlined warranty it’s either exclusionary or some how deeper than the state or federal requirements. Implied warranties do exist naturally within any regulated commerce system. So if you wanna look in a more educated light they already had a warranty they would be forced to follow should you take issue with their solution when approached.

Bringing up her "I am a minority card", calling a collab with Scotty Allen instead of her a discrimination, was also terrible. That being said, if one thinks that someone asked them out to the hotel, it will be remembered 4 years later, I don't see a problem there. Misunderstandings happen and can be remembered. The problem is the denial of reality and not accepting that it was a mistake in communication. Some people will never own up to a mistake even if it's something as inconsequential as this (it was an inconsequential misunderstanding on her side, pretty big insensitivity on Linus' side, but he owned up to it). I too agree with Luke that it's more of a "trust but verify" scenario. I understood exactly what Linus meant last week, but as Steve pointed out, it's just about having it in writing more than pretty much anything else. Linus is right - even with it in writing, companies won't necessarily warranty products. I've had it happen many times (many of the big electronics retailers here in New Zealand, for example, have been fined over such things multiple times). But having it in writing is at least better than having nothing. Worst case scenarios and all.

But the "buy-in-warranties" branded in the store or otherwise not granted automatically without the law stepping-in, that's where we enter "smells like a scam"-territory. Of course all countries have different sort of warranties/guarantees when it comes to law: E.G. In Finland there really is no "if-you're-not-happy-with-this"-guarantee law-wise. But majority of stores tend to give some sort of compensation provided you follow the requested guidelines for the feedback / "reclamation" / complaint ( provide the bar/EAN-code, the best-before-date, maybe some images too, and so on ). What is here here covered by law (to my understanding) is the "operability"-warrantry that is automatically covered for the the minimum of six (6)-months ( "Six-month rebuttable presumption"-rule-thing; "Statutory liability for lack of conformity and guarantee in the sale of consumer goods"-phrase/title should be the first result on Google-search-engine in case one wants to read more about it in website of "Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (FCCA))". Fair and understandable. Him offering to meet up at what he felt like a neutral location in the hotel lobby was a natural next step, but he probably didn't know how much prostitution goes on in that space, so it wasn't actually "neutral" in her head. There’s many things he’s done and said over the years that makes this a confusing mess. As you said, he’s very pro-consumer. Even without the written warranty, he apparently treats customers right. However, a warranty is also a very consumer friendly thing to have. Something he’d likely pressure another company into, if he was doing a video on LTT. He’s gone out of his way in videos, like the latest discussion on Threadripper, to remind viewers that companies are not our friends. Yet when it comes to his company, all we have is our trust in LMG. Overall it feels like Linus as a consumer, forgot the guarantees that a consumer wants when shopping from somewhere.

Sent support an email letting them know and noting that I only wanted to let them know for QA reasons and that I could sew the small bit myself. Support emailed back and had a new one sent out no questions asked. I've had a couple other exchanges with LTT support and you guys always provide great quality items and support. Linus (and his team) have done a great job proving that they stand behind what they make and have earned a long term customer from me. I'm not saying you guys don't have more to learn and improve but from my perspective you've been doing everything right as you've been growing into new spaces. I suspect a lot of the backlash against the warranty statements previously is rooted in the US and Canada's apparent lack of legally mandated warranties. In the EU, pretty much any non-perishable goods has a legally mandated minimum warranty of two years. And I don't need to personally sue the retailer if the product I bought from them fails within the warranty period and they refuse to honour the warranty. I just report it to my local consumer protection agency, and they'll handle the case from there (there's a minimum value for cases they'll take, and in Denmark that is DKK500 which is €67 and at current exchange rates that's US$69 and CAD88). In other words, if LMG was an EU company, they would be legally bound to have a minimum warranty of two years on anything they sell - as long as the buyer is in the EU, or is willing to travel to the EU to file suit. But if Canada has no explicit legally mandated warranty (and cursory googling failed to find any), the "trust me, bro!" is all that can be relied upon.

@@chocolatezt I will answer the question regarding warranty first. I am worried about the advantages a mandatory warranty would give larger established companies discouraging competition and hurting small startup companies that could not afford to offer longer-term warranty services. Hurting the market as a whole. Now the second part of your reply. I am of the mindset of if you don't work you don't eat, and I think that should be used in every aspect of life. food, shelter, health care none are human rights. The abundance of these things is a result of humanities hard work. Why should someone get somthing for free if someone else had to work hard to create it. Why should you get anything from society if you don't put any meaningful work into maintaining or improving it. To many people expect handouts nowadays. You should expect life to get you nothing. If you want something EARN IT. If you need something you had better start working for it. Nothing is free. Why should other people pay for your life.

I think it would be better use of time if we were going to regulate something Make it mandatory to release repair manuals or schematics for all products. Maybe make it mandatory to have replacement parts available for sale for a few years. Also different products last different amounts of time, and a blanket 2-year warranty would not fit some products. Cheep products exist for a reason. People buy them. Some products would not be economically feasible if they had to be supported for two years. A mandatory 2-year warranty could have the effect of raising the quality of products, or it could just cause the price of product to increase to support longer warranties making it harder for people to afford things. In regard to a mandatory 2-year warranty not hurting competition. How would it not hurt smaller businesses? It takes a lot of infrastructure to support warranty services paying for people, shipping, and parts. A larger business can support that a lot easier than a smaller one thus giving the advantage to the larger business. I have purchased a lot of stuff from small or new businesses. sometimes they have warranties (about 3 to 6 months on average) other times they don't. it's frustrating sometimes, but it's a risk you must accept when purchasing from them. You just need to do your research before you purchase anything to see if the business is trustworthy. I would rather those small businesses exist and maybe grown to the point were they can offer better and longer warranties. rather than mandate 2-year warranty, and maybe making that business unprofitable in the beginning or unable to get going. In regard to the rest. If we are talking about nature. No one or nothing has the right to life. You ether survive or you don't. In the USA we have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That right to life means no one can take your life unjustly. The rest is up to you as long as it does not infringe on other peoples rights. In regard to healthcare. I agree that the healthcare system in the US is expensive and corrupt. However I am completely against socialized healthcare. Why should anyone have to pay for anyone else medical expenses it's not there problem they have there own. Now if you want to talk about fixing the healthcare system in the use I am all for it. there is a lot of corruption and greed in the US medical system, and Obamacare screwed a lot of people. I know a lot of people who could not afford insurance after it when through. The collusion between healthcare providers and insurance providers need to stop as well. They work together set the prices high to force people to need insurance. also the US has gotten vary lax on anti trust enforcement, and there are a lot more corporations than just the medical industry that need the hammer brought down on them.

The irony of this warranty action is that "trust me bro" could be taken to be an implied warranty if someone decided to sue you anyways. But instead of an explicit warranty with low liability for the company, implied warranties written by the court tend to favour consumers. The value of any warranty still relies on your trust LMG will provide good customer support and remediation. Relying on legal enforceability in consumer law is usually just a giant waste of time and money. Obvious disclaimer not legal advice and depends on your location. I dislike the idea of you getting a PR team Linus. I appreciate your honesty and candor and I respect you and Luke because you are willing to own up to your mistakes and make it right. Also I think people miss the nuance of “companies aren’t your friend” vs. “a warranty is based on trust” Yes you shouldn’t trust a company (they are there to make money) but since a warranty isn’t a very effective consumer protection in actuality (due to cost of lawyers, wording, etc.) the company’s track record is the best indicator for whether or not they will stand behind their work. And as you said it isn’t profitable for you to not just keep people in the community happy. Please keep doing what y’all are doing! I hate seeing you bogged down by all of this and I hope that despite the stress there are still fun and enjoyable moments to running this business.

Similar in Australia, there’s actually multiple ombudsman’s for different industries. Like going to the telecommunications ombudsman to open a dispute is an automatic $1000 fee for the company it’s against, regardless of fault. And if the company still won’t remedy, then the ombudsman will force judgment, and if they try not to comply they get a massive fine far in excess of remedy costs. Warranties also don’t matter in Australia anyway, you buy a $400 washing machine with an advertised 2 year warranty, but consumer protections state expected life of an entry level washing machine is 5 years, so all warranty means is you choose refund, repair or replace, and post warranty the seller decides if they want to refund, repair or replace. But they still are obligated to resolve the broken machine out of warranty.

i think linus sometimes forgets that not everyone knows what he knows or even what some of the community knows. i have never personally ordered anything from ltt store so how would i know that your policy is “we’ll make it right” especially if it’s not in writing. I run an etsy store and my policy on there is similar but even i have clauses in there and i sell like a couple things a month. i think for a company that has publicly said they had millions of dollars of sales on this product the least you can do is provide some kind of warranty even if it’s extremely limited. yes a warranty is not infallible and you’re right it’s only as good as the willingness of the company to follow up on it but to me it’s a big red flag if a company doesn’t have even a basic warranty policy. in the uk and many other eu countries and i’m sure other countries too there is a lot of consumer protections that i could (and have had to in the past) exercise those rights but i don’t wanna do that if i don’t have to it’s long and boring and arduous and i’d rather be playing video games or something. also luke was a good advocate on this one.

In other words, you'd have to find a sufficient number of people all with the same problem that was handled the same way. It's not enough that 10 people's bags were damaged and they don't think customer service did enough, it'd have to be at least 40 people who experienced the same defect in their bag, and LTT did nothing for each of them. 16:00 - Luke states they stated they would have a warrantee in place by the time the bags ship, and that they're now shipping them without a warrantee in place. The problem is, Linus went on this very podcast last week and stated they would replace backpacks with issues. In the US, as part of the Uniform Commercial Code in the US's Code of Federal Regulations, Linus stating they'll back their backpack IS AN IMPLIED WARRANTEE. And the problem with implied warrantees is that they are nebulous and full of poorly defined terms of service. Like, what does "standing behind the backpack 100%" even look like? It's even worse than stating "we don't have a warrantee at this time," because at least you know what the terms are.

thank you! i was going to write this exact thing but you did it… when you sell a product it always comes with a set of implied warranties (it should not break when reasonably used as intended, i.e. merchantability; and it should meet the special claims given in the description, i.e. fitness) and making very vague nonspecific claims about how they will “make things right when you talk to customer support” IS LITERALLY THE DEFINITION OF A WARRANTY… someone can end up in a situation where they may have legal cause for action because LMG does not respond to their requests to support this product after 10 years, if they can prove they made their purchase decision following Linus’s claims on the WAN show… whereas having a basic written warranty and exceeding it in reality is how you REALLY cover your ass. which he’d know if he ever talked to a lawyer about this whole situation before the outrage.
