The black 86 928 driving and popping the headlights at the beginning of your video was my car. I sold it this past February on BaT after 16 years of ownership. It was an absolute time machine with only 35k miles from new and always amazing to drive with the manual transmission. It was truly an honor and privilege, being its conservator for the past 14 years and quite possibly the best Porsche I've ever owned. Thanks for posting this video of an old friend.

@@HernanSpeed Nope! I made that mistake once! I bought a 1970 911E in 1984 for $5,500! Good call because that leather in abundance interior and dash hates sitting outside. A strong U.V deflecting Xpel Prime XR Plus is unbelievable in the florida sun. Just got it on my cars and it’s unreal how it feels like sitting under a tree 🌳 with how much sunshine it deflects from the interior of that car. Great video! I can agree with everything in this video, I went to buy an early 79 5 speed 928 owned by a pilot but the fuel pump went out on it during the test drive, it drove fantasic and felt more toss-able. I ended up settled for a 944 instead as they were much easier to find. I still had the 928 itch and later a friend bought an S4, and when I drove it I couldn't figure out why it didn't feel like the early one I had test drove years earlier. Later on I went to a dealership and test drove another 928 and found it boring compared to my 944 which I'd now modified for autocrossing, you had to drive the 928 flatout to really feel any excitement. I ended up getting rid of my 944 and an early 911. Still owning my 914 from my teens(first Porsche) which I saved from going to the junkyard(was converted to a slantnose not anymore), it's a modified bastard of a car, not original at all with a Boxster transmission and a Audi 1.8T big turbo putting out 320HP. Much more fun then either car so raw, but with a modern drivetrain it can be docile, not a good investment car but its what I like, and gets lots of looks as 914s aren't common anymore as most have been reclaimed by the Earth.

You’ve got great taste in cars! My little brother just got an orange 914-6, it’s fun!! The 944 is a lively feeling car, so are early 928’s. I think that most S4 automatics feel soft is because the transmission linkage is sloppy, so they can feel…lethargic….but it’s easily fixed with a few adjustments. Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊

great video! I'm in the process of a light restore with an 1985 928. It had really good bones. (e.g. good paint, motor and interior). Almost a complete car. The first initial pass of things needed is coming close to $5000 which doesn't include labor. many of them are weird electrical issues after multiple owners.That being said, when brought up to speed properly, these are amazing cars to drive. I appreciate them so much more now after seeing all the modern "plastic" junk being sold for $100k. This is why these cars drive so well. They are extremely planted with the 50/50 weight balance and everything is bolted together with real stainless steel bolts. Not this faux garbage manufactures are using now. 😓

I am looking at two 928s that are close in price. The 78 928 runs on starter fluid and is a 5 speed. The 87 is a S4 with auto trans in unknown, non running condition. And what were the 928's competitors? Mercedes R129, BMW 8-series and Jaguar XJS. I think Porsche was clearly the best car of the bunch. Strange that there aren't any motor media comparison reviews of these. Sure there is the GTS vs 850i comparison and GTS absolutely DEMOLISHED the heavy and slow 8-series. R129 was amazing but it was way softer and more like a luxury car and Jaguar XJS was already ANCIENT at this point. But I think its successor XK X100 (which you reviewed) was pretty much the "British 928". Great cars.

I noticed the gearing changes for the US market many years ago. To go with the much taller rear end ratio, the US manual cars got a wide ratio gearbox with a really steep 1st gear. But if I remember correctly, didn't they go back to Euro gearing in US cars starting in 1990, back to 2.75 or so for manuals and 2.53 for autos?
@HernanSpeed2 ай бұрын
Yes, the gearing got shorter for the manual 928GT with a final drive of 2.73. On a 928 GT, you really can’t ‘step on it’ in 1st gear during normal driving…it creates jack rabbit starts. So, 2nd is used once the car is warmed up. On the early 928’s with the 4.5 engine, you can use 1st all the time because there is much less power. Thanks for watching man! 👊👊

New one started leaking right away so they pulled the transmission and put another new seal in and it’s still leaking. Any suggestions to what’s going on here?
@HernanSpeedАй бұрын
This usually happens when the seals are ‘over torqued’, it creates an uneven surface…so leaks happen. Make sure that the shop knows what they are doing, and they warranty the work. The 928 uses a common Mercedes unit, all parts are still available….there is nothing exotic about it. Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊

Lots of options, it definitely confusing for most. The 1985 US 32V engine has much more low-end torque, which makes it great for an automatic….more power can also be extracted easily.
