And this happens all over Europe, historic Roma neighborhoods near the city center are forcefully demolished without consent of inhabitants and the Roma are forced into segregated ghettoes on the outskirts of society that don’t even have access to basic city services, all because non-Roma didn’t want to see Roma living next to them, and then they get mad that the ghettoes look bad, like how do you expect them to look? Of course unemployment is high when you deny people work based on their race and living conditions, this is what traps Roma into this cycle and most Europeans just chalk it up to “they don’t want to work”

Oppressors never want to admit that the oppressed are indeed oppressed. They just would rather have you believe that the oppressed chose to be that way, and that they have the same rights as the majority but purposely neglect it because the oppressed are just irresponsible, awful and bad people. They set the oppressed up for failure and suffering deliberately than try to convince the world that the oppressed just refuse to be good citizens, they know that they are responsible. This is cognitive dissonance and gaslighting on the oppressors part.

That blocks had water and electricity and canalisation included but when they moved that folk inside they didn't care to teach them how to use it properly (they had no that commodities in their village) so that stuff got amortized by the new inhabitants bc lack of knowledge to use. That was a wrong move from the government that they wanted them to integrate by force but they didn't give enough attention to the process itself.

Yup. Society puts marginalized people of all sorts: be it because of race, religion, skin color, language, ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, ability, and so on. Then society blames marginalized people for the consequences that happened because they were marginalized. I suppose it makes them less uncomfortable since they don't have to take responsibility when they do that.

I feel the same when yt americans talk about Native reservations. They mock how we live in moblie homes, no electricity or running water, no paved roads only dirt roads. But Navajos used to be rich in livestock, we knew about the seasons and moved to "summer" and "winter" homes. But since the U.S gov wanted land, we were foreced on "The Long Walk" then after onto reservations. If you're a colonizer decendent, DO YOUR OWN HISTORY RESEARCH. Public education and gov policies do not care and will always lie in order to be the "winner" U.S gov has broke every treaty they made.

Everyone knows what reservations are and how they came to be; but why do you keep living in a place you never wanted to live in? If you don't have clean water then *move to a place that does have clean water*. All your problems would be solved if you just lived somewhere other than the middle of nowhere while still expecting the same amenities as metropolises. Including your claimed original land! But I live on the 3rd continent now and can tell you that racism and discrimination a huge issue anywhere I went. Sometimes it comes with different faces. EU countries still have a long way to go go, but in certain countries they discuss it at least and trying to build fundaments to become better. How they talk about Roma in Europe, I hear the same lies and hate when it comes to Rohyinga in SEA. I don't get all this hate. Except most eastern european people did have bad experiences with them, it's not as simple as labeling someone as racist. It's a daily occurrence to see a drunk gypsy assault someone on a train, they have a famous way of asking for cigarettes and if you deny or say that you don't smoke get beaten in the best case. I grew up with gypsie classmates who were regularly caught stealing alcohol from supermarkets and getting the police called on them with no reason other than wanting alcohol at the age of 12-3. They did not live in poverty, had a really nice house stuff like a playstation and a huge flatscreen tv, truth be told they lived better than most eastern europeans.

Yes, but what you maybe don't know: in Berlin/Germany (and I am sure also in other cities) real estate speculaters gave Roma workers from eastern europe who are poor and don't have chance to get a good apartment run down flats in their houses by renting the flats with about three rooms to 15 people to "expell" old tenants. Then they cut off the electricity, no trash gets picked up, etc. Their idea is to sell the empty house then which is much easier then one with tenants who fight for their apartments. And guess what, a conservstive newspaper called me as a social worker for homeless people to ask what I think poor german tenants should do if their landlord puts in Roma to empty the house "because they will run it down". I told him :"They should go with their Roma neighbours to the tenants rights organisation and solidare. The enemy is the landlord!" What on hell is wrong with people😪

Wanted to turn the house into a bed and breakfast for tourists and despite the east european people being clean and quiet, he started harrassing them to get them out. Only heard about it from a friend who still lived there. But it was basically the other way round before, because the house needed lots of work done and he rented to them because they also worked on the house for lower rent, and once they were no longer needed it all went downhill. Then he blamed them for everything that was not up to date and put them under pressure.

The word ghetto was invented for the areas European Jews were allowed to live in, and had to return to every night by a curfew, for centuries. The parallels are astonishing. The pointless hatred and stereotyping, the cruelty, the open bigotry. Punishment for success. In the US, there are so many groups who are treated this way -- it's much shorter to list the ones who aren't. It's all vile and always has been. I see a lot of similaritieshere in Canada. Indigenous reservations lack the necessary recourses like running clean water. I hear so many people talk horribly about Indigenous people and their reservations being "dirty" or them being "addicts" but no one talking shit ever talks about how that perceived image got that way in the first place. How their children were ripped away and forced into residential schools, how they saw their friends and family perish and be thrown away like garbage into mass graves, how they were physically, emotionally, mentally, and sexually abused in those schools by the priests and nuns, how they were stripped of their culture and beat for daring to speak in their language. The ones that survived were so traumatized a lot turned to substances just to deal with all the shit they dealt with. Then, when they had kids they unconsciously passed that trauma down and left in a cycle of harm. They aren't "dirty" or "addicts" they are human beings trying to live the best they can in a world that gave them a shitty hand. Instead of being a racist piece of shit talking about HOW they live, why don't you try to HELP? Go volunteer, go do research to see how you can help and how this happened in the first place. The fact that it's so common for people to just bulldoze another person's life for their own well being is fucking sickening.

Thank you for the context. I heard that some ghetto-like area in some Balkan town was demolished in the 1970s to 1980s. Though I am not sure if that was related to the story you mentioned here, I believe there are things happening during the modernization. Even in the USA, there was a housing project called Pruitt-Igoe, which was designed by a well-known architect. It turned into a very bad shape within 20 years. The difference was that the government knew when to start over a failed project.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Slovakia and was truly shocked when I first saw these neighbourhoods. I’d never seen poverty like it. Even when living within small towns, Roma often are segregated, all living together in one huge building. I do have a lot of friends who are both Slovak and Roma, who also lived in more normal conditions, but it’s definitely a widespread and horrific problem which undermines the human rights of so many right here in Europe.

This is such a complex issue, the cycle of poverty, alcohol/drug abuse, premature sexualization, poor education,...it's absolutely terrible that people, especially young children are living like that. You often see kids as young as 10 begging for money and cigarettes, with terribly neglected teeth, hygiene, no shoes. And yet Romani are often portrayed as "the problem", even when they did not choose this.

Ten years ago, when I was a 14 year old teen, a group of Czech and Slovak gamer KZbinrs hired a big wedding limousine and went to Luník 9 "to go sightseeing". I know about this because I was among the last few kids at the KZbinr meetup, waiting for my parents to come pick me up. I was even invited to participate in this, which I refused. After they returned about 40 minutes later, I remember a certain still very popular Slovak KZbinr exiting the limousine, tightly clutching onto his expensive camera, saying how scared for his life he was, laughing at the situation. Then he proceeded to show me pictures and videos he took from inside the limousine. At the time, I thought it was weird and unnecessary. Now, as an adult, I see how racist and bashing this was, absolutely disgusting. I would've almost forgotten this even if it weren't for your video.

Well in Greece Romani Gypsy are associated with serious crimes so discrimination sometimes, although it's bad, isn't baseless. If you see people of the same ethnicity comotting crimes this will make you think that all of them are the same but the bad thing of discrimination is that person who aren't bad are always discriminated with bad people of their ethnicity.

We do this bullshit in the Czech republic too unfortunately. There is a place called Chánov that looks exactly like the place in the picture. It's truly disgusting that we let this happen but some people are trying to help. Not the government people mind you, they absolutely do not care. The problem is, the people in Chánov have a distrust for non-Roma people and there is a reason for it. Solving this will take so much time and effort.

I have tried so many times to explain this sort of thing to my grandma, most relevantly to us in regards to Central/South American immigrants, but she's so stuck in 1950's rural Idaho that she can't wrap her head around the fact that the majority of "those jobless diseased people" - her words, not mine - are refugees fleeing poverty or violence, or just seeking a better life for themselves and their families. And whenever someone talks about traveling in Europe she can't help but mention how "Europe is full of [Romani]", of course using the G-word version, and always spoken in italics. No matter how or how many times we talk about it, well... as my mother and I half-joke, sometimes you can't wash off the Idaho.

Reminds me of my home town of Pittsburgh where, in the 1950s, they basically made it very easy to just condemn a house, so they went around condemning black housing and then they torn it all down, forcing black home owners to rent because redlining barred them from mortgages. . .

In Spain we also have a lot of gypsys and the garbage trucks pass through their neighbourhoods just as much if not more than most neighbourhoods but its still full of trash everywhere. Your point about historical (and current depending on the country) gypsy oppresion is valid but there are people that do want to live like this I´ve heard them straight up saying Id rather live in a shack with hijacked electricity than being crammed into an apartment and paying for rent, water and electricity. Most dont wanna live like this but a lot of them do

It took some time to do my own research and understand just how wrong they have and continue to be treated and how injustice perpetuates the negative stereotypes of the opressed. Quoting from Ever After (because the line seems to fit the situation, not because Roma are, as often stereotyped, thieves): "If you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners corrupted from infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed them, what else is to be concluded, sire, but that you first make thieves and then punish them?" First we will deny the Roma their homes, services, and opportunity. Then we will mock them as responsible for their conditions to prove that the situation we created for them is nothing more than they earned. It is gross and sad.

Hello, so it is a little bit more complicated (and worse...) than you mention. I would definitely not say that Roma were traditionally and self-sustainably living in 1970. First of all those were usually not villages but settlements in pretty bad conditions, where people were already being segregated and not provided services. Similarly even the white majority was not living "sustainable traditional lives" in remote villages but they were suffering under poverty and communism and they still mostly lived in better conditions. Describing it as such romanticizes the situation, completely skipping the fact that plenty of Roma were forced to settle in the former Czechoslovakia. Secondly, Lunik IX did not become a ghetto until mid 1990s, before that there were white families as well. The goal was to mix the Roma population with the majority and forcibly reeducate the adults and assimilate them.
