Kill Pens are using emotional manipulation to convince people to buy or donate to horses that they claim are going to ship to slaughter. Unfortunately, the treatment of these horses in kill pens is often brutal and inhumane. This video provides a firsthand account of the atrocities committed at these facilities by a former feedlot worker. The animals are trapped in squalid conditions while their captors accumulate thousands of dollars. It's crucial that we don't support these practices.
The video sheds light on what really happens to horses after their kill-ship date passes. We urge everyone to watch it, educate themselves, and share it with others to bring awareness to this issue. It's important to work towards shutting down these kill pens and ensuring that these innocent animals are treated with the respect and kindness they deserve. The mistreatment of these horses is a serious concern, and we must do what we can to put an end to it.

THANK YOU FOR THIS. I have been trying to tell people this for a VERY long time. When you buy from kill pens, you are killing more horses than the one you just saved. PLEASE, leave the feedlot and kill pen horses for the horse rescues and sanctuaries. Don't put money into the system that willingly kills horses. Find your horse through reputable sellers, REAL 501(c)(3)s, and quality horse people. As cheesy as it sounds, DO YOUR RESEARCH. And please, above all, a horse is FOR LIFE. Don't use him up and then dump him when you're done. Plan for his retirement and to be ready to euthanize him when he needs to be. He gave you his all; now you need to give him yours.

I 100% agree. I live in Germany and it's very different than in the States. You don't get the killbuyers or even Auctions. They used to transport the unwanted horses from Germany to Italy but even that has been stopped. People still eat horsemeat here but you have to take your horse to the slaughterhouse yourself and hold the horse while it is being stunned. My two horses are 27 and it is expensive looking after old horses but it's so worth it. My horse has probably carried me with enough mileage to go round the world 😍 always looking after me when we were out. It's my turn to spoil him. I have noticed that so many people are trying to sell really old horses here now the vet prices have been put up by 30%. It breaks my heart when I see a horse of 29 years being disposed of 😢

Changing the laws is one thing, enforcing the laws is another. What use is the best law to you if the law enforcement officers look the other way and the courts impose ridiculously low penalties? Whenever there is a lot of money and lobbying involved, the victims are left hanging. The only thing that helps is the ceaseless fight, the never-ending enlightenment. A good example is the Yulin dog meat festival, in which thousands of dogs are brutally murdered every year after they were no less cruelly raised or stolen, not to mention being transported, squashed together in tiny cages. Even after many years of fighting by animal rights activists, La Grande Bouffe continues unabated and there are still enough fools who donate money to scam organizations or do not question whether there is dog fur on their stylish clothing, because it is cheaper than fake fur. The same goes for dog leather, hardly anyone is aware of it. So anyone who wants to take up the fight against endless animal suffering must be aware that it will be a fight that will last your entire life and that society will look askance at you and not at the animal abusers.

I wish to add, this to the conversation, it's not just horses that end up in these horrible places. And it's not just farm animals that end up in these horrendous situations. It's pets such as dogs, cats rabbits, even parrots. I used to volunteer at a vet clinic that would foster unwanted parrots and pets. It got to the point that it was ridiculous, the number of people that would just abandon a parrot outside in a Minnesota winter. Below freezing temperatures, snow, freezing rain and wind chills below zero. This beautiful birds were left in filthy cages that were too small, or there was 20 budgies to 10"x 10" cage. No food no water left at the back door of clinic, basically to die. There were so many times that you could not save these birds and they had to be euthanized. The ones we could save, were miracles. The cost basically pull the clinic under in the end. Oh yeah there was cats and dogs on leashes tied to the back door of the clinic too. Left by who knows who. No food no water in freezing weather. So many of them were euthanized. Even with security up on all sides of the building people still did this. That clinic is now closed, the cost of caring for the unwanted,no longer needed, unloved pets drove the clinic into bankruptcy.

I was a vet tech years ago and I acquired one dog that was tied to the clinic staff door that was a client’s dog. We called the owner and she said it wasn’t her dog. The owner of the clinic said he didn’t want the dog to go to the owner so I took her and had 10 years with her. After I stopped working at a vet clinic, I had taken one of my dogs to the clinic we were using at the time and they had found a single kitten in a cardboard box, on the doorstep. It was the coldest day of the year. No towel and the top of the box was left open. Luckily she was too young to get out of the box due to it’s height. I quit working at vet clinic due to compassion fatigue.

Let's not forget that kill buyers and traders are also praying on rescues at auctions. They bring in horses they could not otherwise sell hoping there's a rescue on-site that will pay a decent price. Some of these horses are so crippled or sick that the end up dying shortly after purchase. Or they may require thousands of dollars to rehab. Horses at auctions are also often drugged, have undisclosed lameness or illness issues, incorrect coggins paperwork, age discrepancies, etc. This is why changes in the laws are so important. We need to not only protect horses but also the people buying horses.

There are many posing as rescues that are working with the kill pens to scam those willing to put up funds to save them. They publicize the ‘plight’ of the slaughter bound horse, get the funds to rescue said horse and pocket the money. A few weeks later, that same horse will go to slaughter with no publicity and, obviously, no intervention. the sale barns call these ‘Heartstring Horses’ and they don’t expose this racket because it lines the pockets of everyone involved. How do you tell the difference? The real ones have resources - they can prove they’re not the ‘middle man’ in all of these transactions. That ‘middle ground’ is where the scammers live.

I've bought horses out of the "kill pens" at auctions. Horses that owners and/or kill buyers had unloaded to either dispose of or try to make a few bucks on while hauling to the slaughter house. I never even knew places like these existed and from what was mentioned it sounds like they frequented a sale in my state. I've only been to that sale once many years ago, but it was a "special sale" with zero horses in poor health. It's quite a distance from me, so that was the only time I've been there. When I've heard people talk about saving horses from kill pens, I always assumed they were talking about the horses at the sales that were obviously going to end up in the slaughter pipeline if someone didn't intervene. This is absolutely disgusting and very eye opening. So many humans have lost all sense of morality, ethics and respect for lives. Money alone is not the root of all evil, but the greed and disregard for the lives of others, be they humans or animals in the pursuit of money certainly is.

That you can't report these places, and have them shut down for all the abuse happening, but not only that, but false advertising as well? It just feels like it shouldn't be so easy to do this, but somehow it is. The people who run these kill pens, or any other facility who allow abuse should face criminal charges, it really shouldn't be allowed.

There are laws in place, but they’re not uniformly enforced. There aren’t enough regulators. Most people in this country don’t want to pay for actual enforcement. Too many people in this country would rather send a $500 donation to a random “rescue” each year than pay another $100 in taxes to fund the government agencies that are tasked with enforcing the existing laws.

I fail to understand how a country like America can allow such horrific abuse. Not just to horses but all animals. Its obvious 'kill pens' is a money maker for those that run them. If its unregulated its ridiculously easy why to manipulate the public to buy broken sick horses so they can go out buy more and repeat. In a country where you can own guns so have access and the means to end suffering of horses and other animals if unable to afford vet care, unable to get a vet in time or whatever reason, i cant wrap my head around that animals are left sick or with horrific injuries and sent to auction to earn the owner some money without any care, concerned or thought for the suffering it blows my mind when they have the ability to end suffering or have suffering ended this isn't a thought for some who sell and discard. I use to envy America and want to live there but America is sick the Uk is broken but thank god this could never exist here. How America cannot ensure the safety of animals and have this going on unregulated is outrageous whether its 2023 or 1993 it shouldn't be happening in any time

I know as I type this that I am repeating what many others have said or thought: How can anyone live with themselves after participating in this kind of treatment of horses? I know that humans are capable of horrible acts of cruelty, even to other humans. Look at any film taken when the German concentration camps were liberated for proof of that, or the current war between Hamas and Israel. But horses are innocent of any intelligent, premeditated malevalant motivation to organize against we who domesticated them for our use and benefit. They are innocent and completely at our mercy. I'm no tree-hugger or vegan. If animals are raised for consumption, they must be treated well and harvested humanely. But horses, dogs and cats are different. They are companion animals. Almost all civilizations were conquered, tamed and built with the help of horses. We literally couldn't have done it as successfully without them. They should be honored and cherished for their contribution to our survival and our progress. They need and deserve our protection; legal protection and prosecution of those who are responsible for their suffering and mistreatment or turn a blind eye when they see they are being mistreated!

I volunteered for a 501c rescue once and these people were in it for the money, not the horses. They didn’t feed or water them and many died on site. I, along with others reported it and eventually this person was closed, however, these people would relocate and open up under a different name to start the process again . This particular person eventually was exposed through court and closed once again. Courts issued an order where she could no longer own animals. That got overturned and she is now a puppy and bird mill. It never stops and disgusting. These animals suffer and states need to have stricture laws.

I live in Northern New England, this stable closed years ago. So I will not disclose the state or the stable. The owner whipped her horses, and she proudly bragged about it that her animals were terrified of her. She was also trying to get into Big Lick (especially the chains around the ankle), and training horses into English, mostly by strapping a martingale down as tight as she could get it. She also smacked a horse with a helmet in the face in a fit of rage at one point. My mom called Animal Control about the abuse after I left (I didn't last long), and was told: “As long as they're fed and sheltered, they aren't being abused.” She never forgot that.

Current laws are so lax and outdated which is why we're seeing this horrendous abuse continue. What is needed is a nationwide blanket specifically drafted for horse owners. This means the law would be the same in every single state. The minute you take possession of a horse you become responsible for its welfare. And in addition there needs to be funding available to hire as many USDA inspectors as needed in each state to inspect and investigate all reported horse (& livestock) neglect/abuse cases.

I live in Germany and the laws are tough. Every horse has to be chipped and has it's own passport. The chip number and passport has to be the same. You can't even transport a horse without it's passport. A horse owner has a choice whether the horse can be slaughtered, if it says none slaughter in it's passport then a horse will never be slaughtered, even if it is sold on. Vets always check passport and chip number when dealing with a new horse. All the vaccinations and medications are also written in their passports, even when teeth are floated. I think this should be taken on world wide.

YES, these kill pen scammers have infested every aspect of the internet. Using any and all avenues to reach good people that want to save a horse. all socials, emails, fake websites, donor fraud by a lot of fake rescues, too. These monsters are living wealthy lives, all morality gone for the greed of money. It will be a very difficult cycle to break, but thankfully Tawnee, is on the frontlines during the suffering horses - and traveling meeting to meeting to get laws changed... I highly respect every member of the HPHS. They are telling the stories of these beautiful & forgiving animals. Giving them the love they so deserve and crave so badly... and taking their pain away. They are making changes! I foresee a massive accomplishment in the near future, I can just feel it in my gut. But we also have to do our part! If every subscriber shared this on their socials, think of the MASSIVE REACH & difference it would make! That is the VERY LEAST we can do. I guess I don’t understand the rules in the states . I’m from Canada yes the bad place with slaughter houses .. however even animals considered livestock here cannot be mistreated and starved . It is illegal . We have welfare organizations but also RCMP take complaints very seriously . Your animals will be seized . You will fined . There should be more jail Time but we are pretty lax with that here ALL around . I have been to many auctions here and I’ve never seen horses in this bad of condition . I bought my daughters horse from auction. Sounds like kill buyers or feedlots are far worse than slaughter houses. I didn’t understand what you meant by ‘pipeline’ but I guess it makes sense now. I would never send my horse to either knowing what I now know - as a youngster I thought that’s just what happened to old / injured horses - even going strait to a slaughter house would be very traumatic to a horse . But vets really need to think about lowering their prices for euthanasia- the drugs do not cost that much and maybe more people would go that route vs auction for slaughter . Also places like FB should reconsider their rules for selling horses - what are ppl to do with horses the don’t want or can’t keep ? Rescues are overflowing and frankly their rules for adoption have gotten insane. Many ppl are now running ‘rescues’ simply to have others pay for their farms.

I agree with most of this. I remember seeing horses listed at feedlots for insane amounts and fund raisers going to pay to 'bail' them. Common sense would tell you there is no way they are getting those prices from the slaughter house (and you could buy a horse of equal (or often better) quality for half (or less)), not to mention how do you know where your money is going? That said I have purchased (PURCHASED, not bailed, saved, adopted, etc.) a few horses from feed lots. All have been as described, but to be fair one was simply described as 'a mare', I had a pic and it was assumed she was unhandled (and she was). The rest came from a different kill lot, I have followed them a long time and as far as I have seen or experienced they do their best to give an accurate description. All were young, healthy, and sound (not all of them were, but all the ones I bought were), and were well below market value (or I wouldn't have bought them), and were exactly as described, if I was 'that kind of person' I could have purchased these horses, quarantined for a month, claimed I'd owned them longer and sold them for a considerable profit (nice horses worth more than what I paid), but I'm not that kind of person, so... They were in danger of getting 'kill lot/auction crud', but were never in danger of going for slaughter (except the one that came from the other lot, she may have). The last one (2 year old registered colt) was not healthy enough to get a health cert (something he picked up at the lot or auction they got him from) so they offered to quarantine for free till he was healthy enough to go, it took 6 weeks and I was freaking out a bit about what was going to walk off that trailer, but to my relief he was in great shape! I am not advising buying from kill lots, but if you do use some common sense.
