Thank you for having me on the channel! One thing I wanted to clarify is that I do support the use of semaglutide in type 2 diabetes AND in people who are obese/overweight with a weight-related condition. Obesity is a chronic, complex disease and it is not uncommon for people struggle to lose weight with diet modifications and exercise alone, so there is certainly a role for medication-assisted weight loss. Though the long-term effects do need to be further studied and side effects exist, in my opinion, the more options we have for treatment the better. The decision to start semaglutide should be an individualized one based on a person's specific potential benefit vs risk - there is no "right" answer for all. When there is a shortage and every dose matters, we need to prioritize those who for which it can be the greatest benefit - which includes both people with type 2 diabetes and people with obesity/overweight and does NOT include people who want to lose a couple pounds to fit into a particular outfit or achieve an "underweight" appearance.

Right? So many use it when those with diabetes are who should get it. I struggle a lot to lose weight cuz I have ALOT of issues with textures and swallowing and I cannot work out due to severe chronic pain and being a full time wheelchair user. So it would help me alot but I'm not going to take it from those with diabetes

I agree. It's the same issue for HRT. There are too many males who are being unnecessarily prescribed oestrogen for cosmetic reasons, which are depleting the supply for women who really need it medically, such as menopausal women. People who need it should be prioritised.

I am a medical doctor and I am suffering from obesity. Back in November 2022 I decided to embark on a weight loss journey. I have so far lost about 52 lbs. I considered prescribing Ozempic for myself to aid the weight loss but decided against it because of the shortage of Ozempic and the fact that so many diabetic patients have not been able to have access to the medication. It is my conviction that diabetics should be a priority. I’m happy with my choice not to use Ozempic because I wanted a safe, slow and gradual weight loss and I have been able to achieve that with better diet and exercise. To be completely frank I also saw it as a challenge to be able to lose weight without medication. I also wasn’t too keen on giving myself weekly injections. I also am aware of the potential side effects and figured it would be better to try without Ozempic. That being said, I don’t think there is anything wrong with using Ozempic to treat obesity as that is also a serious illness. But def not a fan of it being used as a weight loss aid for people who are not overweight. Thank you for this video, very good info.

The amount of self prescribing or asking one of your homies to prescribe you a pain killer/muscle relaxer and anti anxiety medication. Lost 30 lbs since Ozempic. I have diabetes type 2 for over 22 years. Doctors have tried many medications and nothing has worked well. At one point my A1C was 16. It is now a 7. My weight is under 200 first time in over 30 years. Ozempic has been a great addition to my medical regime.

You know I'm wondering why my doctor told me that he didn't believe I was right for Ozempic, because I use way too much insulin & Ozempic is a once a week dosage. I love your wife's sentiment about self-acceptance and physical appearance not being a trend. She is a sensible woman who obviously cares for her patients. Sadly, people (especially women) keep falling into the trap of solely viewing themselves in a superficial manner. There is no quick fix. We just have to take care of ourselves, both physically and emotionally. If people are doing their best, love the essence of who they are yet still want a little lift (or have serious injuries like burns and/or accidents to correct) then they should call Dr. Linkov.

Tbf, you can’t blame it all on women being “superficial”, you can also blame it on patriarchal society and how (some) men set the beauty standards for women namely always looking young, not looking old, never getting old. In short, catering to what they want women to look like. I have type 2 diabetes. Last year there was a global shortage of Ozempic and I went six weeks without it, finally going back to the insulin injections I used to take twelve years ago. I went in for a routine eye test today and they told me that there were signs of diabetic damage to my eyes. I have to go back in three months to see if the eyes have healed or not. Now I understand that obesity can be a serious problem, but I think the people facing blindness or amputation should have first call on this medication.

@@alicia2931 I have seen some countries mandating diabetics getting it first, but who is to say that's happening in the US? I haven't heard anything about that. Also, just because Ozempic is FDA approved for diabetes, doesn't mean doctors don't prescribe it off-label for weight loss for people who can afford it to pay out of pocket at a pharmacy for it. It's the same active ingredient as Wegovy, but a different dose.

There are other drugs that do similar things just without the side effect of weight-loss (not talking about insulin) that type 2 diabetics can take. Ozempic is not a life saving medication like insulin, and there are other drugs that do similar things. Blame thin ppl in Hollywood, I don't care about that, but the attitude that people with obesity are killing you because you can't get Ozempic is disingenuous and false. I am also sick of the fear mongering of, well if you take it to control obesity you have to be on it for life.... just like someone taking it to control type 2 diabetes. Also, I have seen plenty of people who complain about fat people taking their meds posting in forums that while their A1C is good and other numbers good they haven't lost any weight and are unhappy about that. Weight-loss, for many people who also have type 2, is clearly a motivating factor. My sis had an A1C of 7.4 and her cholesterol was through the roof, doctor wouldn't even diagnose her with pre-diabetes, but I knew someone with an A1C lower than hers complaining about all the people taking it "just to lose weight" when they should be first in line because they have diabetes. Having a diagnosis can sometimes be a privilege depending on your access to quality care. Other people taking FDA approved medication for their condition as prescribed by their doctor is not your business. Not all weight-loss is because you "just want to look good" and also, some people literally die before a doctor will give them decent treatment, losing weight can be life or death. It might make me sad that someone is losing weight just because they want to be socially acceptable, but I am also not going to fault them when we live in a world that denies you healthcare, jobs, and basic kindness if you are fat.

In European Union to be prescribed it has to be combined with a personalized diet and exercise plan for this reason. Ofc doctors can’t control if the patient follows everything, but at least they legally have to make a complete plan

Ok so I'm 297 and I desperately need knee replacements but can't get them without losing at least 60 pounds. Being that I have extremely brittle bones in my knees from bone spurs and can barely walk, is this risk worth it. I'm on weight watchers and do a resistance band and leg crunches routine every other day so I've got muscle.

It's really hurtful and frustrating seeing the backlash involved. I was prediabetic. And let's face it, MOST type 2 diabetics got there from first being overweight or obese. This drug is saving so many more people from falling into the diabetic category. People don't see that. I wish the frustration would be aimed at the fact that Wegovy is WAY more money than Ozempic and so people who could move to Wegovy are on Ozempic. Thank you for this, I think people don’t understand that obese people are at risk or have multiple other co-morbidities like hypothyroidism, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension can also use ozempic. If there wasn’t a shortage I don’t think people would be complaining as much. I also think that there are many other options for medications for diabetics and not just ozempic or wegovy. Most people in my family are diabetic and they’ve been on many different medications to find the right one. Yes ozempic is good at what it does but it’s not the ONLY diabetic medication. Hopefully when the supply of ozempic meets the demand this craze will die down.

Exactly this. There are NO effective treatments for weight loss and it’s a much bigger risk factor for type II diabetes. My doctor offered me a prescription and i turned her down because of the backlash. Maybe at some point in the future I’ll take her up on it, or people will pull their heads out of their asses and stop talking out of both sides of it.

I mean maybe some people with obesity need it to qualify for life saving surgeries, maybe some people need it because they are on their way to a heart attack, maybe some people need it because we live in a world where any anonymous person on the internet can come on to a comment section and say mean things to fat people without consequences. My grandmother had type 2 diabetes, and she was obese. Do you know which one severely impacted her life... obesity. She wasn't ridiculed for being diabetic, she wasn't denied access to the public because of diabetes, she wasn't given substandard care because of diabetes. But she experienced all those things because she was fat. She did a good job controlling her diabetes though diet, insulin when needed, and other therapies, but it didn't matter what she ate, she was fat. And that is the thing that led to her having a lower quality of life. I would love to live in a world where the size of your body doesn't seriously impact life outcomes due to hate and stigma, but we don't, so you should look within and reflect on why you are so disdainful of fat people who are just trying to make the best choices they can for themselves.

I still regret falling for the thin eyebrow trend back in the day and overplucking my eyebrows lol, and that's such a trivial thing. I can't imagine completely changing my whole shape and then five or ten years later just watching how the trend changes.

In the 30’s and 40’s, my grandma said they shaved or plucked their eyebrows completely and drew thin lines on but in the late 40’s her eyebrows just disappeared so she had to draw them on her whole life. She told me that when I was very young so I never fell for those trends, thankfully.

I'm also on both sides of the argument. I think people can easily put each other down for petty reasons and that can lead to people feeling bad about themselves and even to body dysphoria. Lifting people up and accepting a wider range of traits that can be beautiful instead of being obsessed with the status quo of beauty standards which change fast anyways, can be a much more healthy approach to people feeling good about themselves since that is the main goal for everyone. Beauty should not be a competition outside of certain professions that do exactly that. But it is also true that you decide how much other people's opinions affect your own decisions and how you see yourself. And it's your own responsablity what you do with your body and if you are pleased with the result.

My life before Ozempic can best be described as an unending metabolic and endocrine struggle. I literaly hated myself for not being able to overcome a disease that wasn't possible to overcome. I have been taking Ozempic for over 3 years: my sugar is stable, bloodpressure (no more drops!) and liverfunction have vastly improved. My quality of life has vastly improved. My chances of reaching old age (with a more or less acceptable physical health) have vastly increased. I have 2 doses left and I am scared. I don't want my health to deteriorate. I pray for a miracle, my pharmacist has been my guardian angle during these past 6 months of shortage. I am on 2 weeks notice and not ready to accept what might not be avoidable.

To everyone who replied: thank you for your concern. It's been a month with ups and downs. No, I did not get my prescription: I had to accept it and switch to other meds. 3x the cost and daily injections. Atm it feels like the meds aren't doing much else beside the side effects. I'm at 50% of my dosis and atm constant nausea, emesis, bradycardia and hypotension are once again my daily companions. I would like to build up to 100% asap to avoid underminding my health, but my body needs time to adapt. I feel a bit on hold right now, but things will get better again.

Great video, Doctors! Today is my one year anniversary of my journey with type 2 diabetes and Ozempic. I feel like a brand new person and look like one as well. My energy level is starting to increase drastically, and I owe it to Ozempic. I had not weighed myself throughout this journey, opting instead to concentrate on my mind, body, and soul. Knowing what I put I'm my body has been key. I initially started keto with Ozempic, and that was very short-lived. I needed to portion my food out and be sure to work with a dietician who can teach you how to eat the things you love and still lose weight. So, just how much have I lost in one year? 87 lbs.

The most frustrating to me part of the Ozempic-for-weightloss thing is that my mum has been forced OFF OF TWO DIFFERENT diabetes medications because all the stockpiles hot taken up by weight loss people, so even her backup was gone. She's now back to 2x daily just to live when she was much happier on the 1x weekly. Her blood sugar levels were undergoing a wonderful steady improvement and then boom, no more medication 😑

Just a very gentle fyi that ozempic isn’t insulin! That’s why it’s not authorized for type I diabetics. It’s a medication that helps control blood sugar by slowing the release of insulin in your body. I fully agree though about it being awful that people feel they need to ration insulin (or any type of life saving medication!) because of the cost or due to a shortage.
