If you have ever driven a diesel, it is almost the same. I went from an F250 diesel to a lightning and I experience no range anxiety because diesel isn't available at every gas station. Very similar.

Ev’s are best first experienced as cars… (Tesla model 3) This way you get long range, cheap charging, and the highest efficiency. For long distance drives it makes no sense to use a pickup truck at all… except for, in this case, they wanted to test it out and see how it felt.

I was thinking that too. When I'm down to 150 miles of range in my power boost it starts to feel like I'm close to empty. I love the range it has, especially when towing. I towed my popup tent trailer ( only 2k lbs) from just north of the grapevine on I-5 to San Diego (180 miles) and got 22 mpg, a couple of weeks ago. Pretty sweet. Tim is right though, the EV is in the model T stage and will quickly become much better.

And think about how much worse this could be if you were driving into a strong headwind. Or you had to sit in stopped traffic with heat or a/c running. Or you had to go like 400 or 500 miles to this wedding. A trip that would take you half a day with a gas engine will now take you two days with an EV.

Great video. Confirmed my surmises about EV ownership. In other words, they are not good for people who live in rural areas or make long trips. And they are generally a PITA. Also, I’m not sure there is a huge dollar savings, especially considering the money spent while waiting for it to charge, the extra insurance expense, and the cost of the vehicle.

If your pulling a trailer that is approximately 20-24 feet long and have to recharge at a charging station it is very difficult to charge with a trailer in tow. Your trailer will stick out to far at a charging station and your'd need to unhook and find a place to park your trailer before charging.

Great video...really appreciated all the details (particularly the time & cost info). One of the big unanswered questions for me is - what is your time worth? I have a VW Touareg TDI that with a full tank at the start of the trip - would have made that roundtrip without stopping for fuel. Typically get around 600 miles with 90 to empty ( I try not to push it past that). My total cost of the trip for me would be around $100-$115 for diesel - but - I would have over an 1.5 hours of my time back without waiting, searching or worrying about how to get home. How much $$$ is that worth? At the point, my time is worth more than the difference.. The Lightening is perfect for the urban environment. If I rarely ever left ""town" - I would consider one.

As more companies get involved in supplying the stations and more people using them the prices will drop. If not fewer people will travel the new expensive stations won't get any money to pay the bill it cost to install them. Remember eventually there will be as many charging stations as there are gas stations.

Tim, perhaps I missed something but when you made the statement of 559 miles for $82 of charging cost I believe there might’ve been a mistake made. Correct me if I’m wrong but you started with a charged vehicle and ended with a vehicle that was basically depleted. I believe you should have filled the vehicle up to the same percentage at the end of your trip to get an accurate account on how much money it actually cost. No different then with a gas vehicle. You would stop at a gas station close to home, fuel up, complete your trip, and then fuel up at the end.

You can’t look at it that way. First, I charge at home. Second, there are no superchargers in my area. EVs are different than gas models and this changes everything about testing them.

I was thinking the same thing. When you are trying to determine total cost for the trip you need to factor in the initial charge. No different than gas. Just because my tank was full when I pulled out of the garage doesn’t mean I don’t have to figure that cost in. Yes, you charged at home but there is still a cost associated with it. I have a 2019 Tundra Crewmax with a 32 gallon tank. Currently $125.00 to fill it up. That gets me roughly 500 miles. Not very efficient. Tim beats me hands down regardless but on that same 579 mile trip I only need to stop once for 5 minutes to fill the tank again. The pissing match, at the end of the day, is meaningless. No single vehicle is going to suit every need. Determine for yourself what your priorities and preferences are and make your buying choice accordingly. That is, until the government tells you what you can buy. We can then all carpool in the EV to the broom factory wearing our grey jumpsuits.

Tim - PROPS - doing the road trip with the whole family as a first experience of distance EV travel!! Street cred - you’ve got it! EV road tripping has a very real learning curve. I’ve done it a little and it still is a PLAN CAREFULLY exercise. A help is staying overnight at a place that has Level 2 chargering available to customers. It makes the morning start easy, knowing it’s full at the beginning of the day.

I have a 2001 Chevy Tahoe. I get 16 mi to the gallon on the highway. After all the calculations I would have spent $40 more on this trip and 10 minutes at the gas station. Plus I wouldn't have the monthly payment for the $90,000 vehicle, and No stress worrying about where I could find electric chargers. I don't understand why people buy these vehicles. I drive a 2014 Ford Focus, and the Focus has more space for a large guy like me than the Maverick, which is insane, and disappointing. I truly appreciate this video. It has shown me more than any other review that the cost of EV public charging is nearly equal to the price of gasoline for a pickup truck. (I live in Texas, so fuel is cheaper here - averaging about $3.15 around Dallas). With the up-front price of the EV, plus the cost of public charging, plus electrical rates rising, I don't see an electric vehicle as a smart buy for those of us who live in the "exurbs" or country. If I lived within 20 miles of work, and rarely drove outside of the city, it would make complete sense, but just wouldn't work for my situation or for many of my family members that live about 80 miles outside of the Dallas metro.

It honestly takes me nearly as long to get fuel at Costco or Buc-ee's, etc because they're the "cheap" stations. And 99% of the time, you'd be charging at home, unless you live in an apartment. The cost is still the biggest problem.

Agree. Green hydrogen fuel cells are the answer as there is no pathway to net zero emissions without extensive use of green hydrogen fuel cells which in this type of vehicle have 500 to 700 miles of range and refills in less than 6 minutes.

I'm sure others have told you in the comments below, but with the EA pass ($4 a month, you only pay .31 cents per KW. Which a huge difference from .43 cents per KW you are paying on this video. Also, just like ICE, EVs have a hidden buffer after the battery reaches 0%. On the Lightning it's about 20 miles to provide you a way to get a charger even after your battery says 0% left.

So...$23 could get you 6.38 gallons of gas at $3.60 per gallon.(And it took 30 minutes of your time to get that $23 of electricty) Those 6.38 gallons of gas in say a Powerboost, should get you 134 miles of travel at 21mpg (which you should be able to get). And you could fill that 6.38 gallons in about 3 minutes. How much less is a Powerboost vs Lightening? How much is 27 minutes of your time worth (the difference in time in putting in electricity vs gasoline)? I'm so glad I ordered a Powerboost. So with the Powerboost, you fill faster, you can travel further per dollar, and you have less stress. What are the advantages of the Lightening?

We live 6 hours from the nearest major city, we’re in the oil fields where trucks literally run from sun up to sun down and some all night too. That’s how many ppl make their living here. #3 there is A LOT of towing and hauling going on here. What do you think that towing will do to that EV range? #4 how many fast charging stations do you think are in a rural area like this? I think EVs are neat, shoot, I’d love to have one as a toy but just not practical for this region right now.

Semi's already have this technology as part of their adaptive cruise control package. I drove a 21 Freightliner and it was literally like a pinball bouncing back and forth between the solid line of the shoulder and the striping separating the middle lanes.

I drive a 2017 F150 XLT Supercab 2WD with 5.0 and 6 spd auto. The truck has 150,000 miles, and has only had oil changes, brakes and two sets of tires. Overall it has been great, reliable transportation. Last week, it just completed a round-trip drive from Niagara Falls, NY to Long Beach, CA. The truck averaged 22.8 MPG over the entire trip. It is has the 24 gallon tank, so can typically go about 550 miles on a full tank. Considering this is about 2,500 miles each way, this would be ten tanks of 87 octane gasoline. Assuming about 10 minutes for fill-up, even call it 12 minutes, total time spent for "recharge" for a 5,000 mile return trip would be about _2 hours._ Gasoline stations were abundant everywhere, with exception of some parts of northeastern Colorado and eastern Utah. Used A/C at times and defrost and heat in the CO and UT mountains. *Daily driving time was 14 hours and 800 miles, for a three day drive each way.* *_How long would this drive take with an electric F150 ?"_*

I’m not big on EVs but I don’t want to see families stranded on the side of the road in winter time. Maybe if you put a soft folding tonneau cover it’ll help reduce the drag and get more range. I have one on my truck and it makes a difference mpg wise.

Like your comment caption said, we need interchangeable batteries, where you pull into a station and drop your dead one and put in a fresh charged one. In and out in 5 minutes. The problem is the batteries would have to be standardized. As humans we are no longer smart enough to do this.

I like the Route 66 analogy. I think that’s the mindset you have to have for those longer distance trip probably for the next 3-5 years for sure (maybe longer) depending on your area and/or State. I live in Texas and outside your major metropolitans this is not an EV friendly state. I’m not sure it will be I’m in an area the nearest fast charger is 70+ miles away. I have a day 4 reservation that still hasn’t been fulfilled by Ford but they told me that I’m going to be able to build it soon. I have a 2022 Powerboost and the dealerships here are price gouging as much as $20k so I’m not sure if I’ll convert (even though I’ve waited almost 2 years). I’m looking at an out of state option. actually you can carry 2 electric generators that can be linked to charge 220. Not exactly cheap but it will charge you at level 2. And they are also coming out with the charging suitcases. Pay a monthly fee, and you can grab one and take it with you. Just return it and grab another. obviously we need infrastructure, but it is happening!!!

I don't see why people keep bringing up the cost of operation of an EV vs the ICE equivalent. Every new EV on the market has an increased cost up front to pay for at least 3-4 years of gas/maintenance for the identical ICE version. It's easy to see the price differences with manufacturers that have identical vehicles in both powertrains (F150, Silverado, Hyundai, Kia, etc.). It's harder for Tesla, but you can easily get a comparably equipped Accord or Camry for thousands less than a Model 3.

Basically in rural areas like western Nebraska the EV is not the right vehicle for the job and probably won’t be feasible for at least a decade. Bigger question is what happens in the winter? How much worse is that range anxiety when you have to drive through a snowstorm or happen to get stuck?

Yea, too much planning and headache for me. What about at night when some of these places are closed for business or the one and only charging station is Out of Order or there is 5 Cars in front of you or you are sitting in a traffic jam for hours in 95-degree weather You are SOL! There are so many Variables to this that NO ONE is talking about. $0.14 a mile for Charging, I can drive my 5.7 Toyota for $0.21 per Mile on that trip with High Gas prices, fill up in 10 Mins and be gone. I just am not seeing the Benefit of these EV's, you're not saving the Planet with these Fat charging cords, that is not even an Argument at this point in the game and its Early in the Game at the Moment.

Yes they will. There is a mandatory 10 year warranty regarding the battery. I'd expect it'd need atleast 2 battery swaps in that time with normal use. Who could stand driving an ev that long without dying from stress and range anxiety I have no clue.

You discovered a new use case for the frunk. A place to put stinky things that you don’t want to blow out the truck bed - like Chinese food! Lol. But also, everybody should slow life down a little. Take a bit longer while driving long trips and enjoy it. It’s a glorified golf cart. Some things will be better (cheap fuel, torque, zero maintenance, fill at home) some things worse. Go to a place where everybody drives golf carts like Port Aransas and you’ll see there’s a way it works and is pretty fun. The simplicity is relaxing.

EVs aren't great if you tow long distances or live in a rural area. Good thing most people live in Metropolitan areas. The other thing that wasn't mentioned is that most people buying these have two incomes and a car for each adult driver. The EV can handle the local daily driving with big savings. That's why my Expedition stays parked and we drive an EV everywhere. It's hundreds in gas savings each month.

I did a Lake Tahoe run to Missoula Montana in my Lariat ER, yeah I was a little nervous. But after this trip, it really got the me over the range anxiety hump. There seemed to be an EA charger every 100 miles or so. BTW for $4 a month join EA and it’s 31 cents a Kw.

Not a long distance option yet. The anxiety would make the trip unenjoyable for me. And the thought of hanging around a charging station during a trip is a deal breaker. I want to get where I'm going as fast as legally possible. I won't even get off the freeway for fuel unless the station is on my side. And battery degradation? How long till it only holds half a charge? Thanks for being an early adopter. If I was thinking about this truck, I'd probably reconsider.

What you experienced are all inconveniences, but not deal breakers. The deal breaker is that the fancy self-driving EVs sustain so much damage in a fender bender/parking lot accident, that they are declared a total loss. All of the self-driving sensors are in the bumper, which the first thing at the scene of the accident. The cost you do not mention, is the cost to insure them.

I rented a Tesla in Dallas and almost ran out of juice! No supercharging station close enough with all the traffic in Dallas to make it. I had to use a hotel charger (chargepoint) and basically got 10 miles in 1/2 hour timeframe. Dallas metroplex is a huge major city and there is truly not enough ev charging infrastructure to make this work at this point. Even the hotel had two stations with 100''s of guests if I got there and it was being used I would have been screwed. Don't see how all these ex's make sense in all cases. It is truly scary considering you could get stranded.

My 2021 hemi ram would have made the whole trip for the same money. Would have stopped once for 5 minutes and shaved 1 hour and 35 minutes off the trip. And would have 3/4 of a tank left!

Plus have been money well spent to get the larger battery pack. 230 miles is just not enough in my eyes. I reserved a Silverado RST. It’s supposed to have minimum 400 miles of range (640 KM) on a full charge. But let’s see when it’s actually out. So far their numbers have been modest. Back in January they said minimum 664 horsepower with max power mode. They were not kidding, now they are saying 754 horsepower! 90 HP more. So I’m hoping the range is actually better then 400 miles. If they can get it to 450 miles that’s would be awesome. Even at 400 miles it’s really good for a truck. For me, 230 mile range I would be freaking out all the time. The smaller batteries forces you to have to power up at the faster chargers. Which costs you more money! So anyone watching, get the bigger battery

Remember all estimated mileage ranges are 60% city driving 40% highway driving. Varies because of highway speeds used in there calculations. I can get 2 4 miles per kwh driving all 55 mph highway that's around 315 mile range. All city driving I've gotten as good as 3.3 miles per kwh that's around 432 mile range. 70 mph highway average 2 miles per kwh that's around 262 mile range. The better your driving habits are the more range you'll get. One pedal driving will gain range in city and stop & go traffic. Not much on highway.

In our state, beginning 2035, the EV is the replacement of the ICE vehicles if you want to buy a new car, it will not be a choice. So, what I learned from this video is that if you want to have a half-ton EV pickup truck, you do not save any money if charging cost you $0.41+ per kw/h. It is pretty much comparable to paying $5 per gallon.

So my 2021 f150 with the 2.7 Eco boost gets 19.9 mpg, so lets call it 20 mpg. 100 miles is roughly 5 gallons of gas, at say $3.50 a gallon that's $17.50 in gas. At your first charge at Walmart you gained 100 miles of range for $23. I'm no mathematician but I think I'm better off in my 2.7, not to mention the charging anxiety associated. No thanks on the EV.

I am learning that the EV's are being supported and promoted by food and snack places at the charging points. I now see that we are going to see an increase in diabetes and obesity directly attributed to the 1-2 recharge times needed by these vehicles every 2-3 hours. In the old days we planned stops around fun things and interesting sites. Now your whole trip is planned around charging stations and food while waiting for hours on recharging.

So my gas powered Hemi gets about 18-19mpg on the freeway. I have a 33 gal tank which at an avg of $3.39 per gal is about $112 to fill up and will get me around 600 miles. I wont have to keep finding charging stations, can take a direct route and no real range anxiety. I can also have everything on, everything charging, radio on, etc. And best of all I can more accurately estimate travel time too. So in conclusion I win. Period. Good luck wasting most of your time seeking out charging points and waiting for it to charge while costing about the same.

Look at a map BEFORE you get in the truck, plot your course, and you won't have to waste battery power using that huge screen in the truck to tell you turn by turn where to go. Plus, when you look at a map and plot your course yourself you will KNOW where you are at all times. People who use GPS have no idea where they are because the just do what it tells them to do. One stop you said you got 100 mile range for $20, that works out at 20c per mile not 14c.!! It seems like you added your starting charge for free. You work out mileage costs by filling your tank at the beginning then refilling it at the end, you didn't refill at the end.

Right, I didn't show the beginning charge or the ending charge since I charged at home and would do that no matter what kind of trip I did. Home charging is way cheaper than fast charging. For this Lightning it is like $15 for a full tank at home for 320 miles of range.

You started with 257 miles of range and ended with 20, so you should knock 237 miles off your total to calculate cost. But I'll give you true world miles (because of hills) and only knock off 180 miles. 559 - 180 = 379. $82 / 379 = ~22 cents per mile.(21.6) Also I bet if you added up all the additional miles your car should have got after each charge plus the original 257, I bet your car calculated well over 700 miles.! Maybe you should do that for another video, calculated vs actual miles travelled.

But I reduced that to 180 miles (because of reduced mileage going up hills). Then deducted that from your travel mileage, because your house paid for that mileage. My 2021 F350 Super Crew dually 6.7L diesel with 48 gallon tank cost about the same as your .......scooter and I get over 1000 miles range with 3 adults. My truck also does truck stuff. You can keep your scooter.
