I choose believe the Bible because it’s a reliable collection of historical documents, written down by eye witnesses during the lifetime of other eye witnesses. They report to supernatural events that took place in successful fulfillment of specific prophecies and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

6,000 manuscripts (or portions) just to New Testament alone. Julius Ceasar Gallic Wars - fewer than a dozen copies. Aristotle poetics - less than 10 copies. New Testament, 6,000. Socrates - ZERO. The only thing we know about Socrates was that written by Plato. No surviving writings of Socrates. New Testatment - 6,000.

Logic beats Speculation You have been given evidence. You choose to keep your eyes closed to it. Not because you don't believe in God. You do. Your problem is the same problem every one else has or had at one time. Including me. You think you are God. Also, in order to deny the validity of scripture you must deny logic.

You dont choose to be Christian. Jesus said: John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have *chosen* you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Faith is not a choice. It is destiny for all who seek the truth.

John 15:19 was spoken to the apostles about them being chosen rather than them choosing Jesus. 2 Peter 3:9- The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. If Jesus wants all to come to repentance how can it be that he chooses certain people to be saved as if "predestined"? It's not logical. I want everyone to be saved but I'll only save certain people that I choose. It's contradicting that way.

That's entirely not the point. If God took that same approach we would not have the writings of Paul. Voddie said that it's a legitimate question and it deserves a legitimate answer. Some of the greatest opponents of God's word become the greatest advocates. Of course you shouldn't waste time with vain arguments but some people are genuinely searching for the truth. Don't be so quick to rob them of it...

this man said that archaeology confirms the bible...... no it doesn't. Telling me that Jerusalem existed doesn't mean some itinerant Jew was raised from the dead from some magic being. ill stop being an internet atheist when people stop trying to get me to believe their myths
@swhite79295 жыл бұрын
He doesn't mean that. He means more specific stuff, like King David's existence. For centuries there was nothing outside of the Old Testament referring to him and then the Tel Dan Stele was found in the 90s, citing the "House of David" along with names of Kings like Ahaz, Jehoram, and Jehu (all of whom are referenced to in Chronicles and Kings, two books of the OT). Or the conquest of Babylon by Cyrus, which is described in the book of Daniel and was confirmed by the discovery of the Cyrus Cylinder in 1879. Or the Pilate Stone, found in 1961 with a mention of "Pontius Pilate" carved on it, corroborating the biblical account, which states that Pilate was a prefect (Pilate also being referenced to by Philo of Alexandria and Josephus, Jewish historians who had no reason to back up any lie the Christians could have invented). There are *thousands* of exemples, and of course each one is going to be disputed by some scholars - but even if dozens, or hundreds of them were fabricated, misidentified or wrongly dated, what about the rest?
@trackjc1130905 жыл бұрын
@@swhite7929 cool David existed. Great Pilate existed doesn't mean Jesus rose from the dead. There is no archaeological evidence for the supernatural claims of the bible. Manhattan exists, spiderman doesn't.
@swhite79295 жыл бұрын
@@trackjc113090 But he's not necessarily saying there's *archeological* proof for the supernatural stuff, though? More like because there's archeological proof for the history/characters/political stuff, the whole book appears to be a pretty cohesive ensemble which can make good claims to authenticity - and that there are *other* types of proof for the supernatural things. Of course you can't dig out a rock to prove a miracle. That's why Voddie also talks about the reliability of the testimonies, how the manuscrits can't have been changed and so on.
@trackjc1130905 жыл бұрын
@@swhite7929 Its authentic and historical the same way that Homer's Illiad is authentic and historical. However, should we believe that because Greece existed that a man opened a bag of wind to propel him home? of course not. The claim is the bible, the testimony, the gospels and its not the proof of it. Telling me that people were really convinced of it doesn't mean its true, it means that people were convinced of it. People get convinced of false things all the time unfortunately
@swhite79295 жыл бұрын
@@trackjc113090 I'm sorry you feel that way, because the way I see it your only line of argumentation against Voddie's claims is "there's no way it happened so it's not true." I mean, he carefully explains his reasoning and presents his evidence. I would be much more inclined to believe *your* rational worldview if you were doing the same. I'm not accusing you of hypocrisy or anything, just to be clear. I'm just saying that if you come here with the mindset "this guy is wrong and nothing's gonna convince me otherwise" it's only logical that you'd reject everything he says without a second thought - which is a pity.

Why would a good God send anyone to Hell?
@campeze79552 жыл бұрын
The same reason a good and just judge let a proven criminal go as innocent. It doesn’t happen. -God’s holiness demands perfection. That’s why the gospel is powerful- in Christ a believer is perfected and justified under God’s demand for perfection.
@emeryflores76432 жыл бұрын
@@campeze7955 did said judge create the conditions in which the criminal lives in (as well as the entire universe apparently)??? Nope. There are very few criminals who just commit crimes for the sake of it. There’s typically some underlying reason for why they’re doing what they’re doing. How can god create the circumstances somebody has to live in, and then send them to an eternal Hell bc the person fell victim to those circumstances. Humans aren’t gods. We are flawed, so why is your so-called God not compassionate enough to understand that?

No you chose to believe in Deformed 5-Point Calvinism and then to twist the Bible to conform to Calvinism. God arranges all things by his sovereign counsel, in such a way that individuals are born, who are doomed from the womb to certain death and are to glorify him by their destruction.( John Calvin Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 3, Chapter 23, Paragraph 6): “…salvation is freely offered to some while others are barred from access to it.” (John Calvin, Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 3, Chapter 21, Paragraph 5) When your children or grandchildren are old enough to be taught about God, You and your spouse must tell the truths of Calvinism to your children. You must be honest and tell them what you believe about God: Little Johnny, God has predestined the minority of people to be saved and go to heaven forever, and He has predestined the majority of people to be eternally damned and burn in the fires of hell. We have no idea, little Johnny, if God has predestined you to be forever damned or forever saved. We love you, little Johnny, but we accept the fact that God might not love you, and that He may have plans to send you to hell for your future sins. If you do find yourself one day burning in hell because He hasn’t elected to save you, just remember that we will always love you, even if God hates you. Take comfort knowing that we are not like God. We will be in heaven forever only because we were unconditionally chosen for salvation before we were born. That would be the only reason that we won’t be in hell with you if you find yourself there. It won’t be because of anything we did. So also take comfort in knowing that. It may not seem fair, but who are we to judge God? So again, if you find yourself in hell, remember that we will always love you as we forever worship the God who loved us but who hated you, the God who sent His Son to die for us but not for you. Please, we ask, don’t let it bother you-if you find yourself in hell-that we love the God who hated you and showed you no mercy. We must accept the fact that God is sovereign, and He does what He pleases. Will you teach that to your children or grandchildren? Watch their spiritual progress over the ensuing years. I suspect that your answer will be “never.” But why not? Its easy to call yourself a Calvinist but when it comes to saying it anyone can see the hideousness of it. TRUTH IN LOVE This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. Deuteronomy 30: 19-20 Proverbs 1 : 23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. 24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, 25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, 26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-
