Jordan B Peterson

Жыл бұрын

This episode was recorded on April 4, 2022.
In this speech at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Jordan shared recent thoughts on ethics, scripture, and the problem of perception. He asked the audience to reflect on how we remember great stories (but seem to instantly forget bad ones), why Western culture ended up being a book (instead of-say-a sickle), and whether the West truly is a “phallogocentric" culture.
All of this, Jordan says, tied to a broader possibility-perhaps his “most radical claim"-that, as we navigate the value structures we call reality, a lot of so-called “navigational” problems are really veiled ethical ones.

Dr Peterson do you have views on current Philippine elections/politics?? We are so down right now. Our people are so misinformed, blinded by the current frontrunner and son of former dictator of our country. Sorry for being out of nowhere, but I don't know where to hear some wisdom about it right now without the bias of parties. I've been sharing some of what I learned from reading 12 rules and from your lectures by social media interactions to the best of my abilities on my community.

My favorite part is when he broke down God’s first words in which they were “Truthful Speech”. With that understanding in play, Freedom of Speech takes on a whole new meaning to me, from mankind’s standpoint. Mankind doesn’t not know “truthful speech”, thus mankind has to speak more and often to get the truthful speech that is communicative and actionable speech. Only then do people move in the correct direction, everything else becomes confusing noise by those speaking in tongues to keep others silenced. I hope that didn’t come off confusing but his take God’s First Words just opened my mind on what The Founding Fathers did. I never linked importance of Freedom of Speech until then.

@@brianbridges8124 Personally, Dr. Peterson has introduced me to the importance of viewing the Bible from a psychological and archetypal perspective. Not only from that perspective per se, but from that perspective as well. It’s made scriptures such as religious texts less awkward to talk about in conversation, and it really points out how people in the world are far more similar than they are different. It has also helped me understand myself in that I can look back at hard times I’ve been through and realize how it may have affected me and my psyche, both for the better and for the worse. I hope this helps

@annaeklund5723

Pardon in advance because I will not hold back here, and I’ll come to why that is. Peterson is as much a ’great thinker’ as someone like Tony Robbins. He has emerged as a popular figure because of the market demand for a self-help guru nested between liberal and conservative streams in the era just after the Trump election, when a lot of people felt disoriented in the wake. He rose to claim that ’mediator point’, taking the mantle, and was able to sustain its use by speaking to the lowest common denominators of his audience, filling the demand at large. As far as his ’thinking’ goes there is nothing novel or of great depth there, no commentary that isn’t rehashed or of a lesser quality of something already existing. His ’intellectual’ legacy is chiefly two self-help books and a book professing his admiration of Jung. He can most charitably be viewed as a less developed version of thinkers like Northrop Frye or Marshall McLuhan, lacking their depth of erudition and insight, by miles. All of these ecstatic reviews have the tendency to soar into borderline embarassing levels of hyberbole that simply put cannot be merited. Peterson, as a thinker, (and not a self-help guru) can at most charitably be conceived as a thinker for people who -simply put- don’t read books. With that said, yes, he might have changed your life. Yes, you could have been inspired by him in a myriad of ways. But that all mostly comes down to his form, and not his content. His form is that of a self-help thinker reaching a vast array of people that previously didn’t have a good enough market alternative. The objective content of his is banal, but effective, like ’clean your room’ and ’take a shower’, but do in no way warrant the kind of profundity that is sometimes erroneusly ascribed to him. These are common self-help concepts that are conveyed in multitude of ways. For what he is, he is an effective self-help guru. But beyond that, we shouldn’t fool ourselves and ascribe to him what simply isn’t there. Yes, what I’m saying might seem hostile, or not ’in vogue’, but that’s of no importance to me. Accuracy is of importance.

@@annaeklund5723 you missed all the research conducted and published by him and his team in his research lab which, if you were being charitable, would probably count as 'intellectual' contribution. even as an agnostic there is no way I could disprove that Western worldview is inherently Judaeo-Christian. But i could also say that in the last few years there is a gradual shift to PowerIsAllThatMatter that is why social credit system and censorship and state monitoring of its citizens is becoming more real. Gradually Christian Liberal thought tempered by the renaissance and enlightenment of Greek influence is deteriorating and being replaced by Confucian + Pragmatic Nationalism of CCP. As an Asian familiar with both... not really sure which we really want... they have their merits and downsides. Christian world view believes in common people and CCP believes in leaders.... and i really dont know... both seems right depending if either common people are corrupt - CCP or if leaders are corrupt - go for Christianity. But in places like Canada - where Trudeau is definitely corrupt, Christian world view is the only way. At least with CCP, I have some respect of it. China is a complicated beast to handle and citizens have inherent distrust and trying to dupe each other (see the 2008 milk scandal or Evergrande real estate scandal, etc). A strong ethical righteous leader that has zero tolerance to corruption is really what is needed.

Jennifer, i don't know you, i do personally love that name however. I think it goes back to that old Donovan song "Jennifer Juniper" and the ambiguity it contained. I was always rooting for him, that she loved him too, unfortunately, i think divining true love from a flower is a lost art! :) But to what you were talking about, one consistent thing Dr. Peterson has done is to value, and not in a condescending way, is the value the (not so common anymore) house wife as an example. Your station in life is not what makes you important. Perhaps you are there because that is exactly where you need to be. What you do, regardless of your means, regardless of peer pressure, regardless of financial insecurity, what you gift to another by maintaining a family, that is what makes you exceptional. BTW, Jennifer, when my father tried to force my mother to take a job beyond tending home, my siblings and i went on strike from school, until she was allowed to return home. I just can't tell you how hollow it felt when we would come back, but mother was not there to welcome us with her warmth. Am i spoiled? By todays standards, definitely! But i am happy to say that my nephew, his family have that same privilege of mom being at home, even though she is very smart, very capable, she wants to be with her boys. She is not sitting on the couch eating chocolates all day though, she still has the job of home schooling them! And keeping those boys occupied... that is an endeavor! :)

The contradictions being that Atoms need a Star "LIGHT" first to have existed and then end with it's Demise thus creating the Atoms to exist in the first place. And yet in Genesis we have an ocean or water's of the deep existing before the referred body of ICE has seen the light of day, Which suggests that all knowing not only is clueless to the fact that all atoms Originate from the Demise of Stars, Stars that BTW provide Light, that all knowing intelligence seems to have been oblivious to the fact that waters of the deep or oceans of the deep require a source of light to excite Solid Ice into a state of liquid water.. Now lets see how intelligent you are or how dumb you are by ignoring basic physics, physics that you can observe every winter as the days and the time of light shortens, and with that, how water returns to a state before it's seen the light of day, and yet genesis clearly contradicts actual physical facts, facts that an all knowing intelligence should KNOW!..

As someone of a similar background I was thinking that one of the only other potential "foundations" besides the Bible would be Plato/Aristotle, but I think that is only really applicable in an academic sense. The influence of the Bible extends much further into culture/society itself. Hang in there though, from my experience your University will probably do its best to secularize/minimize the importance of Christian thought, but they can never really get rid of it. I found it enjoyable to do some reading on my own (Augustine, Aquinas etc.) just to remind myself of that original core which can now feel neglected.

I can honestly say reading the Bible was the catalyst for a life change so dramatic, that many who watched it became Christian as well. The book is so powerful that it took a homeless decades long heroin addict/alcoholic like me, and in three years turned me into a sober business owner. It is truly extraordinary, mystical, and beautiful in a way you can only understand by trying to live it. It is in the becoming a true disciple of Christ Jesus that we have the power to change not only ourselves, but also the world around us. I am going to be honest it is not easy an easy path, but He provides all you need to persevere through it all. I have been a Christian for 44 years since 1980 and have staked my life on the Bible. Ironically, I just visited the Museum of the Bible on a visit to Maryland and the DC area! The Scriptures shape all of my opinions, thoughts, elected public office, volunteer work, motherhood, being a wife-there’s a biblical principal in there that concerns every aspect of living for every human being, who’s ever lived and who will live after we’re gone. The Bible is a living document, empowered by the Holy Spirit to bring itself to life in each person who reads, it even if they start out not believing it’s true!

If I hadn’t read quite a few of these comments I would have came away thinking that most people would not have grasped the deeper truth that he was trying very hard to get his listeners to understand, and that’s not suggesting that I completely understood everything either, along with perhaps that it’s probably true, that overall it was above the average person thought processes, and also wouldn’t have been the type of person who would have had any interest in listening to this in the first place. But I think this would be very convincing to anyone who sincerely considered themselves to be someone who possessed a fair amount of open minded integrity. But there lies the problem, who could admit that they didn’t, and there seems to be an amazing number of people who obviously don’t possess those quality’s of character, and yet don’t appear to have enough self-awareness to realize that they don’t, or worse yet, wouldn’t care if they didn’t. And here’s another paradox, the higher their Academic achievements, the more likely they are to not have them, it just makes them more dangerous.

The fact that Jordan always starts to tear up when he thinks about God is a clear sign to all believers that he's close to the truth. The only thing holding him back is you have to come as a child to God, stop overthinking everything. He's almost there... for all those who believe, let's keep this man in our prayers. he has the potential to reach millions with the good news and more importantly to have eternal life. 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Edmund husserl developed phenomenology which is a science of our experience (hint: it’s not an introspective psychology). Phenomenology requires that we abandon all metaphysics commitments and examine our experience with a neutral view. In this way we can discover the structures of experiencing. Socrates says that he was the only wise man because he alone knew that he was not wise. And so the first step towards wisdom is to recognize you’re not wise. Which is said on the Bible in this way ‘fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,’ which is something like the recognition of your smallness is the only way to wisdom; smallness in the presence of Greatness makes the contrast most striking. Recognizing your own sin as sin is the first step towards healing. If you think you’re ok, you’ll never seek the physician.

I prefer Hi-story ⬆️ 🙃 similar to high standards. To think the creator has a penis is silly, but I understand the need to simplify things so humans can use language which is rudimentary. It's just as silly to think of the fabric of creation having a vagina. Pleasure organs for reproducing, for the entity that literally created everything? Maybe God enjoys a test run, but then God would be everything that reproduces. So penis, vagina and anything else that is used to reproduce including simple division. But let's not forget the invention of destruction. Which in itself is the part of the cycle of creation. No I don't see God needing to reproduce unless God is cyclical as well and that is an interesting thought.
@SepticFuddy
@SepticFuddy Жыл бұрын
@@redred8328 I think it's a little more complex than that. God's social desire results in His creation of being in His own image that He can form interpersonal relationships with. In that way God is in fact "reproducing," since all that exists is the imprinting of His mind onto the fabric of reality. Thus, even though He is not employing His own physical genitalia to create and derive neurological pleasure, He does create those systems in us as an image of His own nature - the drive to create and the joy it brings. It is a metaphor, yes, and the term "image" certainly implies a reduction. The finite cannot perfectly mirror the infinite, after all. But it is not only a metaphor, it is also a mechanism through which we can relate on a personal basis to the One who created us. And since our very nature is intended to mimic His to the greatest extent that a limited being can mimic an infinite one, that is reproduction in the truest sense He possibly could. Hence, the primacy of human importance over the rest of creation.

@@SepticFuddy I see how you really need God to be associated with our term for male, but that is your need not a provable reality outside of your own. If you think your belief (opinion) is truth that is dogmatic and the path towards ignorance, or a further narrowing path at best. Presumption that God made us in his image is a narrow thought. Creation or God made everything in the image of creation. So everything that exists is in the image of God. It is only men whose egos are involved think of themselves of being the only image of God and therefore God must look human and in your case be a "man". Your point is arguing for a metaphor which makes my point. Whether you capitalize it or not having God with gender pronouns is cute at best but really just shows the lack of language and critical thinking that is involved with the human race. To harp on this is moot. It is not complex at all but the opposite, its an over simplification for the mentally lazy or stunted. I am all for guiding the species to be more loving, accepting etc as the sheep need a shepherd. But I can still enjoy teasing the sheep every now and then. Maybe one day through poking around thoughts they become a Shepherd themselves.

There is disagreement on how many Protestant denominations there are. It ranges from 20,000 to 47,000. If JP answered one question from just one person a day, from these denominations, every day: About this belief or that belief, it would take him approximately 82 years to answer those questions. That is if the real number is 30,000 denominations. Many people want to pigeon hole him, and claim he belongs to their particular sect, and put him in their little Religeous Box, And tell the world he's ours, he belongs to us. Or conclusively exclude him so that they can then denigrate him righteously, because he doesn't conform to their beliefs. His greatest value as I can see, is to continue to continue 1. He is causing people to think about important issues. 2. He has introduced metaphysical concepts, that are not only intriguing, but Parabolic. 3. He is confronting moral decadence from a psychological point of reference as opposed to religious. 4. And he is attempting to lay his metaphysical hands on truth, and hold it up and show it to us. Personally I think that he is a gift from the Universe, He bears a message for Every human. "Clean your room". It's of such importance. you reason and you arrive at the truth and when you accept it, God forgives your sins - so no need of any sacrifice or payment or Crucifixion of Jesus which the scriptures expose to be a fiction - something that *never happened* . That's the second subject. Don't be shocked. Relax. Take a step back from emotion. Well come to that subject in its own time. “Come now, let us *reason* together, says the LORD: 🚩 though your sins are like scarlet, 👉 ✔️ *they shall be as white as snow* 👈 ; 🚩 though they are red like crimson, 👉 ✔️ *they shall become like wool* 👈 Isaiah 1:18

The very testimony of Jesus is right in front of you. All your life the Church sold you the abomination of the Trinity and Jesus being God BUT here is the reality. The clear and emphatic, *Trinity-DESTROYING* , Islamic, unitarian monotheism of John 17:3 gave so much trouble to the Church as we see in the writings of early patristic authorities as they encounter the verse. One such patristic figure was the Doctor of the Church*** Augustine. He just could not digest the explicit and emphatic Trinity-Destroying testimony of Jesus Christ in John 17:3 that he attempted to MUTILATE the whole thing completely so that it would place Jesus side by side with the Father and together they would be declared “the only true God.” Dissatisfied with what John 17:3 says, Augustine writes the following in Tractate 105 of his Homilies on the Gospel of John: “But this, saith He, is life eternal, that they may know Thee [the Father] the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom Thou hast sent. The [proper] order of the words is: “That Thee [the Father] and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent, they may know to be the only true God.” The clear and emphatic, Islamic, unitarian message of John 17:3 was far too disagreeable to Augustine that he was willing to completely MUTILATE what was there in the scripture. And he was not alone in such an irresponsible enterprise. THE ONLY TRUE GOD - THE FATHER - exposes such kind and destroys such abominations that Christians attribute to HIM and Jesus.
