@@davidjanbaz7728 sorry I missed this, David, if any Cath ever calls you that, point them to the Cath “Decree on Ecumenicism” (Unitatis redintegratio), as Caths, they’re obliged to give it assent, it doesn’t call our separated Christian brethren “heretics.” It says Caths should acknowledge that non-Cath-Christians, through faith in Christ, have salvific grace too. It isn’t the 17th Century anymore. If someone is being saved by grace through faith in Christ, all the sincere debates ought to begin from an acknowledgement of that imo.

If you want to learn more about Church tradition, you should learn about the early church. They didn't keep Baptist traditions on baptism. They taught things the Baptist Church rejects. This is why I don't hold to their interpretation of scripture. It deviates historically from Church normative on baptism teaching.

As someone who was raised Anglican but is now Baptist, I would love a longer video on Baptist church history. I asked my husband who Baptists' "person" was--you know, how Lutherans have Luther, Anglicans have Cramner, Presbyterians have Calvin--and my husband cheekily told me John the Baptist. I laughed, but then found I was really curious about the history of this movement because I just didn't know.

@@johncolvin1283 One big reason was that I married a Baptist! 😂 That's not my only reason though: I'm a Baptist primarily because I hold to believer's baptism. @IHS333 this is a huge misrepresentation of what baptists believe overall. Not to mention just bc words aren't found in scripture doesn't mean the idea that the word is used to encompass isn't. The terms bible and trinity aren't used in scripture yet they are important terms to the faith. I hope you actually look into what baptist doctrines are and what Baptists actually believe about those doctrines

John Smyth in England in the 17th Century started the Baptist movement as a break-a-away from The Church of England but if you're looking for a key charismatic character in the history of the Baptist movement then I expect Charles Spurgeon would be your man along with 'his Bible', which took America by storm (and still does I believe).

Thank you Gavin for your insights. I am a Conservative Baptist - but like you I appreciate the fellowship of all believers. I come from generations of pastors, teachers and missionaries. I found the Lord in Sunday School at the age of Seven. I can still see clearly and re-experience that joy just by remembering my child-like acceptance of needing God to forgive my sins and accept that Christ died on the cross for me. I then wanted to know why I couldn't share in the communion during the Church Service as I had Jesus in my heart too. My parents graduated from Nyack and three Uncles from Wheaton and I graduated from BIOLA. Your messages give me joy and renew my interest in furthering my desire to delve deeper into the "Reasons Why we believe. I will be praying for God's Hand to Bless your ministry.

A person must be “baptized” to be saved, but it has nothing to do with water. The proof is found below. Old Covenant Baptism vs. New Covenant Baptism (water vs. Spirit) Water baptism was a part of the Old Covenant system of ritual washing. The Old Covenant priests had to wash before beginning their service in the temple. (Ex. 30:17-30) When Christ was water baptized by His cousin John in the Jordan River, He was under the Old Covenant system. He also only ate certain foods, and wore certain clothes, as prescribed by the 613 Old Covenant laws. Christ was water baptized by John and then the Holy Spirit came from heaven. (Acts 10:38) The order is reversed in the New Covenant. A person receives the Holy Spirit upon conversion, and then believers often declare their conversion to their friends and family through a water baptism ceremony. Which baptism makes you a member of Christ’s Church? The New Covenant conversion process is described below. (Born-again) Eph 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, (A person must “hear” the Gospel, and “believe” the Gospel, and will then be “sealed” with the Holy Spirit.) Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (See Jer. 31:34 for the New Covenant promise, and 1 John 2:27 for the fulfillment) ============ Which baptism is a part of the salvation process, based on what the Bible says? What did Peter say below? Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Acts 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Based on Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, and Acts 1:5, and Acts 11:15-16, the most important thing about the word "baptize" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26, and is found fulfilled in Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 2:27. Unfortunately, many modern Christians see water/ every time they read the word "baptize" in the text. Based on the above, what is the one baptism of our faith found in the passage below? How many times is the word "Spirit" found in the passage, and how many times is the word "water" found in the passage? Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, (See 1 Cor. 12:13) “baptize” KJV Mat_3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Mar_1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Water or Holy Spirit?, See Eph. 1-13.) Luk_3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Joh_1:26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; Joh_1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. Act 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Act 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 1Co_1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (See Eph. 4:1-5) Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. (Old Covenant ----> New Covenant) .

The only issue is that Baptists ignore parts of the bible. I agree with most of it but not the part about being saved. Baptists believe that all you have to believe in Jesus and you are automatically saved which is not true. @@MiniWalshJunior Faith with out works is a clear sign that someone is not Christian. Faith alone does bring us into the correct relationship with Christ, and if we die in that moment we will enter heaven, just like the thief on the cross. It is Christ sacrifice that saves. After one is saved works follow out of obligation to our commitment to Christ, but not to achieve salvation. it can be compared to marriage. Once I am married i will conduct myself as one who is not single, not because acting married makes me married, but because i entered into that relationship. it is my obligation.

You should also check out the Church history that was in place before the Baptist Church. The early Church so believed in baptismal regeneration and the concept of baptism washing away sins. This is what the Church taught on this subject. Baptism washing sins away by Infusion with God's grace obtained on the cross is the normative understanding of baptism. Not what the Baptist Church says about it later. This is what lead me to reject what the Baptist Church teaches. I cannot easily ignore that this wasn't what the Christians believed in the early Church.

Hmm, I thought the terms charismatic and Baptist were kind of antithetical to each other. Baptist seems to have a wider swathe than I know, but I thought Baptists were pretty firmly cessationists. I've heard ex Baptists talk about when miracles really started to happen in their lives and speaking in tongues happened, totally w/out them seeking it since they were taught it was of the devil. Then they tried to share those experiences w/ other Baptists and were practically shunned.

Hi, Dr. Ortlund. I have a question related to Baptists specifically and catholicity. I am certainly persuaded that the Reformers were performing a renewal/recovery movement within the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church, rather than starting a "new" thing. The Magisterial Reformed, Lutheran, and Anglican seem to fit this view. However, I struggle to see how Baptists can lay claim to this tradition given their unique ecclesiology/sacramentology, as well as their general rejection of historic liturgical forms of worship. I am a Baptist myself, but I struggle to see how we can view ourselves as possessing a continuity with church history in the same sense as an Anglican or Lutheran, for example, given these significant differences. Many of your videos on Protestantism seem to work better for the other Protestant traditions than for ours. Do you have any thoughts on this or resources to point me towards? Thanks for your work!
@truthseeker5489
@truthseeker5489 10 ай бұрын
I'm unsure if this relates to your comment, but I will put it out there anyway. As a non-Christian, I am puzzled by the concept of a renewal/recovery of the one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. No matter how you slice it, a large portion of protestants seem to agree with the premise that the Church as established by Christ fell apart not long after the death of the last Apostle, and therefore, the "true gospel" needed "restoration." Why is this significant? The undeniable implication of this historical view is that what the Son of God Himself established did not survive, but what was established by some other non-Incarnate man did. In the case of Mormons, it is Joseph Smith, who they consider a prophet. For Seventh-Day Adventists, it is Ellen G. White. For other protestants, it's one of the "reformers" of the 16th century. To me, this means that which was restored by mere men has managed to last at least 500 years, while that which was established by God in the Flesh, Jesus Christ, hardly made it past the end of the first century before it became corrupt. How could mere men succeed, and the God-man got it all wrong? Does not this view necessarily elevate the creature above the Creator?

After growing up an Evangelical Quaker and finding myself in a situation where the nearest Evangelical Quaker church was an unaffordable distance away, I decided to become a Baptist largely because of their historic belief in religious liberty, even more so than the Quakers. Like you, I became distressed after learning about all of the religious wars in Europe. However, I've started to wonder how committed today's Baptists still are to this aspect of their heritage. I've never heard a single sermon about it (except online), and I'm not sure many are even aware of it. It's odd how Americans tend to celebrate how many fled to the U.S. seeking religious liberty, but forget that those they were fleeing from were also Christians (or "Christians") running a state church. And when they got here, some (especially the Puritans) merged colony and Church. This began to fall apart after subsequent generations rebelled and Puritans had to adopt a "half-way covenant" so their non-believing children could live as citizens. They also imposed special taxes for persons of other denominations, not unlike the jjizya that Islamists impose. Early American Baptists like John Leland would have none of it. John Leland had a huge role in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but sadly, he is better known today among legal scholars than among Baptists. I don't believe offering the Gospel in one hand while holding the sword (i.e. the coercive power of the state) in the other hand is an effective Evangelicalism strategy. We are called to live in peace with all men, and function as ambassadors of a heavenly kingdom. The Gospel has been far more successful in the U.S. under religious liberty than in Europe with its (mostly empty) state churches. But many today are advocating for a Christian Nationalism similar to Franco or Viktor Orbán. Because...we've forgotten history, or have learned perverted versions of history.

Excellent point. I was attending a church for a couple years where you never know when “the powers that be” move a Pastor to another city/congregation. In the Baptist church, if there isn’t enough authentic Bible study etc by the Pastor, I would find another congregation whose Pastor is digging deep. Choice is great.

So here's a question to my Baptist brothers and sisters in christ. How pacifist should we be as Christians. How should we act under these guidelines? My first thought would probably be to distinguish between being peaceful and being non confrontational. The Bible doesn't say to run away from someone who strikes your cheek. It says to hold your ground and demand, they hit you again. I sometimes understand why people see christians as masochists

Great summary, Dr. Ortlund! I would like to know more about seperation of church from the state though. I'm less convinced about strict secularisation especially in the way that non-believers argue it. After all, I would say even talking about inalienable rights would imply Christian thinking and at least some denomination's views creeping into government. It is almost as if any activist would drag their church with them into government.

That's interesting. Thank you. Here in England Baptists don't tend to describe believers' baptism as a sacrament but rather as an ordinance, so as not to imply that the act of water baptism is a means of grace in and of itself. Maybe it's different in North America?

I used to be baptist, but recently became more convinced of covenant theology and peadobaptism. I've seen just as much damage in congregational churches are they're accountable to nothing but themselves. I think "non-denominational" is very harmful for the church in my opinion. Great video, thanks for sharing your views!

Christ was water baptized by John and then received the Holy Spirit from heaven. The order is reversed in the New Covenant. Based on Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, and Acts 11:15-16, the most important thing about the word "baptize" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26, and is found fulfilled in Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 2:27. Unfortunately, many modern Christians see water when they read the word "baptize" in the text. (See Eph. 4:1-5) Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. (Old Covenant ----> New Covenant) How many people have been saved by the Old Covenant water baptism of John the Baptist? Who did John the Baptist say is the greatest Baptist that ever lived in Luke 3:16? What kind of New Covenant baptism comes from Christ? Hebrews 9:10 Old Covenant vs. New Covenant (CSB) They are physical regulations and only deal with food, drink, and various washings imposed until the time of the new order. (ESV) but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. (ESV+) but deal only with R5food and drink and R6various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. (Geneva) Which only stood in meates and drinkes, and diuers washings, and carnal rites, which were inioyned, vntill the time of reformation. (GW) These gifts and sacrifices were meant to be food, drink, and items used in various purification ceremonies. These ceremonies were required for the body until God would establish a new way of doing things. (KJV) Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. (KJV+) Which stood onlyG3440 inG1909 meatsG1033 andG2532 drinks,G4188 andG2532 diversG1313 washings,G909 andG2532 carnalG4561 ordinances,G1345 imposedG1945 on them untilG3360 the timeG2540 of reformation.G1357 (NKJV) concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. (NLT) For that old system deals only with food and drink and various cleansing ceremonies-physical regulations that were in effect only until a better system could be established. we are baptized in both water and spirit. There are multiple kinds of baptism in the age of grace established by Paul which is for us. The water baptism is not essential for our salvation. What’s important is the idea that our past selves die, and we take on a new life like Christs death and resurrection.

Dr Ortland, I’m a big fan of yours! I have one question, however: in your claim that the early church practiced believer’s baptism, would you address the issue of baptismal regeneration? I believe the early church held to that belief despite its practice of credobaptism.

One interesting thing about these 3 points are that I feel like most protestants I know from various denominations believe these 3 things wholeheartedly. So I would be curious to know what specific points you think distinguish Baptists from other denominations, like Methodists or non-denominational charismatics or Presbyterians.
