An interesting and challenging day on a new stretch of water.
It’s a beat nearby so I was as interested in catching fish as I was having a good look at it and getting an idea of the pools and runs.
There weren’t many fish rising but one spot had a few steady rising fish.
The cast was a bit awkward which meant the drift wasn’t ideal, and it was just one of those days where things just didn’t quite happen.
However having had a good look at that bit of river I suspect I’ll be back there and with
a better ideal of how to approach that particular spot.

Nice fishing Luke. On that beat a few years ago a nice fish rose in a gutter …. He nailed my fly, an 18 incher … beautiful fish . 5 minutes later another one rose a few yards further up …. Same again, another beauty. A few minutes later I spotted movement in the depths …. Surely not another? Yup …. 3 beautiful fish from 20 yards of river in less than half an hour! Super fishing….

Thank You, it is an interesting beat. And an 18 incher is a cracking fish, to get a couple of them a bumper day. Looking at the water, and some of those gutters I think it will be well worth a re-visit.

Hi Luke, nice looking water but I know how you felt losing that one as yesterday I lost the biggest I have ever had on , it was trying to get into fallen branches and with my rod bent double I knew it was huge but the 5lb tippet gave up the battle and a glimpse of it looked like a 6lb+ fish and they are being caught even bigger , a well known guide had a 7lb one recently.

Cheers, yes it's a nice strech of water, I'll be back there again for sure. Looks like it might be good for Grayling later in the year as well. ....Thats a big fish...good to know they are there. Next time 👍

It's the first time this season I've seen decent amounts of rising fish. Hopefully it's the start of the good fishing.

The trout are late rising this year. The swallows are late also. Strange year. Everythings late on the river

Yep, a strange year. in March it was looking like we were going to have an early spring, then the rains came and put everything back a month. Just starting to see Mayfly now so hopefully things will get back to "normal"
