Ace was at a high high level in the story by the time he died. - He was equal to Jimbe on day 1 in the new world. - He canonically had future sight, and was proficient in all types of haki according to the canon Ace novels. - He was able to disarm White Beard in a duel and forced White Beard to use his fruit to take him out. - this White Beard was using ACOC and was on meds compared to his marineford self. - He matched Aokiji's named attack despite just getting out of sea stone cuffs for a week and being starved and sleep deprived. - His only losses in the story were to the future fleet admiral, with the directly superior fruit, and Black Beard who counters all devil fruits and was able to tank a point blank quake attack and then fight Sengoku.

Ace didn’t die because he turned back he died because Akainu exploited Luffy’s weakness. Luffy was at his limit he had already gotten beaten down and used Ivankov’s power to abuse his body way before. There’s also a little bit of plot involved Jimbei was right there and doesn’t do anything until after Ace got hit. While not explicitly stated Luffy understands this it’s what he and Jimbei reflect on post war and no one ever says or implies that Ace wasted their efforts

I was rewatching this and it occurred to me, this guy gave Shanks such a low score when he didn't deserve it because he was mad that Shanks killed captain Kidd. Looking at Kidd's report card for Wano it's clear that he is a Kidd fan. Here Shanks should've gotten a +7 because. Stopped Kaido from going to the war. King was with him. +2 Stopped a magma fist without haki. +2 Threatened to join the fight if everyone else didn't stop fighting, everyone shits themselves and the war ends. +2 Wants to see Luffy but decided not to to keep his promise. +1.
