As a fan of AJR, I find them to be unique to the music I listen to, which is admittedly not exactly normal within itself. As a fan of musicals, I enjoy looking at a song in order to find a story that they want to tell. So by looking at these songs as self contained little stories that don’t need to be unique or kept reasonable. I like to compare it to a fairy tale, where the story is simple, the meaning is simple, and it doesn’t really have anything that needs to connect them all together. As someone who has been raised on older music (70s, 80s music), I enjoy having a band that is willing to just give a catchy beat, and a couple of good hooks. I don’t listen to much modern pop, so I don’t get overwhelmed by all the ‘mellinium pop’ things everyone else gets caught up with. In the end, all I have to say is you’re gonna like what you want, I can’t change that, so that’s fine by me. Enjoy what you want, and I’ll enjoy what I want. In the end, just have a good one and enjoy some music you think is good.

Yea....that's not how you make an album though. An album is a consistent theme, not a collection of random songs. If you like stories in music there are way better bands to listen to. The production and lyrics in these songs are nonsense. Even one of their songs on their own have no focus.
@nolanbreen76315 жыл бұрын
@@TECfan1 I have been thinking about that, and the idea I have come to is that perhaps the story is that none of these stories are connected. The way I like to think of it is that each song is a small production put on within the Neotheater as a play or movie. The same cast is used, but with different characters. Yes, this can lead to being miscast as a role, but it can also lead to having someone play a role they fit into incredibly well. And on your point of there being better bands to experience the story of their songs through, I agree. Of Monsters And Men often have outlandish stories told with odd details. And I love that kind of music. I also like to think that it's fair to give a song a listen, and if you don't enjoy it, accept that someone else likely will. Everyone has different taste in music. I have been exposed to many different kinds of music, and that has given me the ability to enjoy almost everything I've been exposed to. I know that isn't true for everyone, but it is for me, and it definitely is a factor of why I enjoy AJR.

I'm trying to defend an album by one of my favorite bands because I have enjoyed their music and wanted to make sure they weren't only seen in a bad light because of this album. If you ask me, this is their weakest album yet, and their first album, Living Room, is much better.

Opinion on the review: First of all, let me just say I love that you didn't say anything like "How could anyone love this?" or "You have to be stupid to listen to this!" because when anyone does that, I instantly lose my respect for the review. Don't make people feel guilty or stupid for liking something. I am a big AJR fan, but I don't feel offended. This review made me realise why so many people hate AJR. It's just that the parts that I love are the parts that are hated by everyone else. I loved the choirs so much! Also, I don't know if you did this on purpose or if it sounded like this in your house too, but the mic quality was quite horrendous and made a lot of stuff I loved sound really bad. Also, I'd like to see your opinion on the rest, though I doubt you'd like any of it. Maybe just Dear Winter, it's got the least vocal manipulation and is also written by Ryan (who wrote Turning Out Pt. II) instead of Jack.

I really enjoy their songs, I guess it's just not for some people. Some people may not be weird enough or strange enough to get the meaning of each song. Sad to see that so many people hate AJR in my opinion their songs are very catchy, meaningful, and just plain enjoyable. I can see that they may put some weird noises/voices in their songs, but I just think that it makes the song better. I actually listen to the songs if I need to calm down, or if I'm having an anxiety attack. I like their quirkyness, and people shouldn't be hating them so much when their songs help many people. Others can still not enjoy the band or the type of music, but a full blown hate speach isn't by any means necessary. In my mind it's really inspiring three brothers (Adam, Jack, and Ryan) coming together to form a band.

Neotheater was an album that was the album we didn't want, need, or deserve. But personally, this is my 1st experience with AJR and I'm kinda glad with what we got. It's the lowest denominator but they handled the denominator with care. 5++ Edit: Next Up Forever is a lower Good Noodle Birthday Party is an upper Shrug 100 Bad Days is lower Trash Legos is mid shrug Face is lower shrug. That's all the songs I have an opinion on rn

If it's only the sound of AJR that you disagree with, I can 100% understand. Each person has their own music taste and nobody can say that they are wrong for it. I appreciate you actually trying to review the album, unlike every other KZbin critic, but you still suffered from the same problem. The album is primarily a giant metaphor for the struggles people commonly face in their 20's. It seems like everyone on KZbin who claims to be a critic is closed-minded and cannot understand a metaphor. If you want to understand the meaning of each song and hopefully understand the songs, please read on below. To begin, Neotheater can be broken down to a individual meanings, as well as the root meanings. "Neo" comes from the Greek "Neos" or "new". Theater is known as a show or performance, but can be tracted back to the Greek "Theasthai" (to view) and "Thea" (the act of seeing). It literally means a "new show" or "new view". Fitting for somebody going through life's changes in their 20's. It starts with a song ("Next Up Forever") referencing the fear and excitement before a big event (e.g. graduation, first time having sex, dropping an album, etc.). "Birthday Party" is about the naivety of children. They don't understand the issues that adults face (politics, race, etc.). To children, everything is easy and "perfect". "100 Bad Days" explains how important lessons can be learnt from the bad times. When AJR first began, they literally played a show for 3 friends. Everyone passes through tough times, but even those tough times can teach us lessons. "Legos (for short) is about a 20 year old who is moving out on his own and as someone who is about to, its effing terrifying. As people grow up and mature, we realise that life is hard and sucks and we all want to keep that little piece of childhood. Without that, we lose who we were. Children are full of energy, life, and happiness because the struggles and worries that life brings doesn't effect them yet. When we face those new challenges alone, we sometimes want to retreat to a safe place. For many, that it at home with our parents. In the same song, they also say that even when they come home and see the literal legos (or whatever thing it is for you) from their childhood, it just isn't the same as when they were kids. It shows the grim reality that even though we want to return to that easier time, we can never truly go back. "Break my Face" days something similar to "100 Bad Days" in that it tells us to keep looking for a silver lining. Oh, life have you lemons, that sucks. At least it gave you something. The song reminds us it could always be worse. "Turning out pt. ii" is based off Ryan's actual experience. He, like many people, was in a relationship, and when she said "I love you" to him, he responded by saying it back. He didn't stop to think about whether or not he actually believed it until after the relationship ended. He realised that he was never actually in love with her, rather he was on love with the idea of loving and caring for someone. "The Entertainment's Here" can be related to Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence". AJR sing about how we, as a society, are easily bored. We bounce from one thing to the next. Like how we can find a song that we love and quickly it becomes old and we need something else to hold our attention. Old Town Road can be an example for some people. When something gets played on repeat for some time, it quickly becomes old and boring. Even to the point we start to dislike it. "Karma" was written by Jack after performing in Paris. Because of the success of "The Click", he became overwhelmed and depressed. He kept doing good deeds (donating to people, giving others a good time and smiles, etc.), but never felt any happier. He is asking the universe why he is feeling this depressed when he keeps doing good (where is the karma?). Furthermore, the song is a metaphor for mental illnesses that commonly begin in young adulthood. Depression and anxiety because of the radical changes occurring (like graduating and going from life as a student and constantly seeing friends to nothing and no one). "Beats" calls out Beats by Dre. They say that they could be one of the artists who allow their songs to be used for product promotion and when someone hears that song, the dont know AJR, rather they remember the product. They say that if they did that, the money earned would be enough to pay for the production of Neotheater, but also at what cost? "Crazy" (for short) is a song about how people often think that they are alone in their fears, struggles, and beliefs, and the excitement when they realise that they actually aren't alone. "Dear Winter" is one of my favourite songs (tied with Lego and Finale) because Ryan wrote it when he wrote "pt. ii". In the song, he is talking to his future son about growing up (even though Jack sings it). Ryan refers to times that happened in their life's. When Adam turned 21, their dad took a shot with him. He asks Winter to realise that when he asks him about his day, that instead of thinking he is hovering to realise that he just wants to talk. As we grow up, the people we lost contact with that is most painful, but least obvious, are our parents. Think about the last time you actually had an in depth, meaningful conversation with your parents. How long has it been? Finally, "Finale" is just that, the closer to the album. With the repeat of the chorus from Next Up Forever, we come full circle. In the song, they talk about how we've all been on a journey and encountered many people. We all have moments that define us and often we get so busy and overwhelmed that we lose track of how we reached the point we're at. As Jack continues, he notices that the album is ending and asks us to not forget him after this. He also brings up that because they changed how they went about the album, it could be their last. If this is the last one and we forget them, he thanks us for listening to them and hopes that their music allowed us to smile. Because in spite of the money and fame, all they ever wanted was to make music and make people happy. It's only in this song that we realise that Neotheater is actually one giant play/musical and the main protagonist is AJR. We learn the plot of the show if their life and their struggles as they live life in their 20's. The entire album shares pieces of other AJR songs (from obvious to subtle) and is reminiscent of many Broadway musicals (the Met brothers grew up watching Broadway productions and love Les Mis, which does the same musical integration style). Hopefully this provided some clarification:) I know that there is a Reddit post with a similar breakdown of the songs. There is also a KZbin interview with Zach Sang that goes deep into the behind the scenes of the production and meanings.

I think this video is a bit misleading. First off, he sites 5 several KZbin "critics" when he claims NOBODY liked the Click. I don't think those would check out as sources if this were a real "Analysis" as he says it is in the title. Speaking of the title. This is supposed to be a review and analysis but he is listening to everything for the first time. Worth while reviews take multiple listens and analysis requires more effort than just your first guess at what is going on in the album. For instance when he critiques Birthday Party he says he doesn't relate to being a one year old. He's taking a surface level understanding of the lyrical content and spouting of his thoughts like they're thorough and professional opinions. And the opinions he has are ok to have. That's what opinions are. But in a video built on the premise of not being biased, he should take more time to understand the album and actually analyse it before he release a so called revie. This is a KZbinr's first reaction to an album. And that would be ok if he was honest about that.

You sound like an idiot. Theres no point of listening to ajr trash because it has no substance at all
@ChaoticGonke5 жыл бұрын
@@richard-f You do know that you have replied to literally 5 other guys in this thread saying the same thing and not providing any reason as to what you personally don't like or any real rational thought at all. People have different opinions and different tastes. Going out and saying something is "trash" knowing well that it clearly has an audience of people who like their music and think otherwise. I'm not saying I like every one of their songs but if you actually look at the lyrics instead of just calling something terrible, then you would understand that some of these songs actually have a deeper meaning behind them. For example, "100 Bad Days" is an overall idea that bad and horrible experiences can become good stories to tell others as a way to be interesting or entertaining. Or even with "Don't Throw Out My Legos" being about how leaving you're home can be scary and a daunting task, and that the "legos" represent his childhood memories. He's afraid of letting go and becoming an adult so he wants to make sure that his "legos" are preserved and cherished in-case he needs to come back home. I personally really enjoy AJR's music and understand not everyone can get behind the genre of music and style that they are going for. Not everyone is going to like it and I think that's kinda the point. Doesn't mean you have to go around saying it's trash. That'd be like me saying I hate literally almost all rap music because I personally can't stand the genre and the message being portrayed in almost any of the genre's songs. Obviously I do personally dislike rap, but i'm not making people feel bad about liking it :/
@richard-f5 жыл бұрын
@@ChaoticGonke okay you want reasons ill give you reasons. Ajr feels like a band that has no substance to it. Because most of the songs dont even feel genuine and real. Listen to birthday party, its trying to be a song where theres a newborn excited to see what the world is. And hopes all of this and all of that happends in the real world. But what they do is make everything the babys sayings wrong and making the baby ignorant but, its a newborn of course it going to be ignorant. If there trying to say the world is bad then convey that, dont try to say something thats absoultey wrong in the world and adding absolutely nothing or solutions with the addition of bad and loud mixing. Thats basically almost every song on neotheater.
@ChaoticGonke5 жыл бұрын
@@richard-f And that's another thing. Each one of their songs conveys something else and has a different meaning behind them. Not everyone of them is the same nor should be treated the same. Literally the only example people make is Birthday Party and I will be honest, that and only 2 other songs on the album I don't like. But the others, Turning Out, Dear Winter, 100 Bad Days, etc. all have different messages. In order, Turning Out Pt.2 is about a relationship not working out, Dear Winter is the main singers letter to his future child, and 100 Bad Days as I stated before is about bad experiences being made into good stories. If you don't like the sound of them, then don't listen to it and complain about it, simple as that. However, the argument that they are shallow and have no meaning behind their lyrics certainly isn't true. But believe what you want.
@tabicatgymnast74125 жыл бұрын
As a gigantic ajr fan, of course I'm biased. but you actually gave them a chance even th8ygh they aren't your style which I respect. but let me also say that a lot of the lyrics and background vocals you didn't like or understand are vocals and lyrics that inky fans will understand from watching lives and following them and understanding thus style of music. if you don't like it, you don't like it and that's fine, but ajr has an extremely unique sound and a very set tone to their music, it's indie, it's fun and it's not for those who aren't into thus style of music. I respect ajr forever because they started off of nothing, they started street performing and they produced their first album for $90, they make their music in their living room, and they don't get pushed back by hate l. they recently started the neotheater world tour and I've heard a lot of people say it's the best concert they've been to. they sold out radio city music hall and they're doing amazing, they're getting big because they're unique and original, they talk about real things and experiences, so forever live to them.

I've performed in broadway shows, I've struggled with stress and anxiety, I really really connected with this album. I felt it really did piece the ideas together well, but structured the songs in a good way also. Dear winter was nice, but a bit out of place in my opinion. That's just my view though.
