I get why it got popular in the West. It had a nice soundtrack, fanservice that was just lowkey enough that a person who isn't familiar with the tropes would only scratch their head a little as to why the camera seems to be frozen on this 2D girls butt instead of showing the people actually speaking, and animated harem wasn't a "genre" here. I guess a couple people had seen Neon Genesis but this wasn't just nonstop suffering and increasingly more confusing metaphors for adolescence and trauma. But what excuse did Japan have? They had points of reference for this.

The Aria of a Starless Night has a better explaination of why Beaters are hated: They grabbed all the good starter loot from all the early dungeons and killed all the good EXP monsters in the first few months, making it all the harder for newbies to level up or "gitgud". Also the novel mentioned that since beta-testers essentially helped develop the game, they'd be partly responsible for making the the death game possible, or so the logic goes.

What kind of dungeon doesn't spawn a set amount of stuff? Who was this game for, hikikomori's with no life outside the game? This is why it feels like SAO wasn't written by someone with knowledge of games. The idea that loot is first come first serve is so patently stupid because why would anyone bother fighting or exploring later? It's such a terrible game.

@@akumasstorytime3910 You're only half right. 1. You're mixing up "unit is felled down and about to die" status with "unit is shown to be eaten by a monster". Many games have them separate, some do not, I guess this is what confused you. 2. Yes, in SAO these animations are combined, but the thing is - potion is not a "death save" item. This is specifically shown in the next episode, that this would be a separate and super rare item in SAO as a death game (since most common ones were disabled in episode 1 as was said by Kayaba).

Also Kirito pretty much lies in that moment because if you remember him telling Klein the level he made it to in the beta test, he calls himself a beater to take heat off of the other beta testers. He doesn't like it, its actually an act. I think once people have that acknowledgement that whole scene makes sense.

In partial defence of the in-anime SAO game design (from later content) some quests are clearly repeatable (it's implied that there's a time delay of some kind) similarly monsters respawn with some sort of delay. Also there's 100 floors to the world and it's only the central area of the 1st floor that got hunted dry (as no one had managed to unlock the 2nd floor yet). So it's not that the less capable players got permanently wrecked, just left behind and waiting for respawns etc.

If you’re watching the abridged, please do a few more than 3-4! The first and second is very much 2013 humour, and the third is quite experimental and not everyone’s tastes. After that it gets a LOT better, though! And pretty much every episode continues that trend

So, funny story... My first exposure to Kirito was... Fatal Bullet. My first experience with Kirito was a laid back, chill guy on vacation with his wife and kid. It was him saying "video games are always more enjoyable when you play them with people you enjoy being around!" So, I will admit, I may have had an entirely different experience with Kirito.

My first experience was also via the video games. They go on deep discount super often and aren't terrible. I never like Kirito though, because in the other games he's wayyyy more Kirito than he is in Fatal Bullet and I played those first. Fatal Bullet is a wild game, by the way. That story is somehow even more insane than the story of GGO in the anime. Not sure if in a good way or a bad way, but it was worth experiencing, for sure.

@@Leo-we2dl I can compromise on that. Alicization was better than the other seasons but I didn't like it too much. However, to give it some credit it wasn't like I was giving any SAO property a lot of chances. But I will stand by that Elf and GGO had a lot of problems. They were fun to an extent and made for spectacle entertainment but they had so many issues. Tl;Dr SAO is a fine watch for entertainment and it has great moments, but I personally saw too many issues in the story to fully enjoy it.

@@Leo-we2dl Oh no! Yeah it's not like I think season one was SAO's best, Alicization was probably the best one it's just I was tired of the show by then. SAO Abridged however.... Definitely my favorite SAO themed thing, 9.9/10 would rewatch 5 more times.

I read every ToS for any service I use. When I was signing up for online courses awhile ago, I was on the phone with the help desk, and when I got to the TOS, I sat there and read the entire TOS and student handbook to her because it's not like I could say I read it given I just got access to it.

Actually Danny yes I did read the manuals lol. 1. They had game concept art that was dope to look at 2. They taught you the game before the game would hold your hand 3. If anyone remembers final fantasy 7: at the back of the manual they showed you how to deal with the first boss cause the game never tells you “DONT ATTACK THE SCORPION WITH ITS TAIL RAISED!” After this I always read the manuals from game books.

A better anime for understanding an MMO and using that premise more effectively is Log Horizon. Similar premise but actually displays an understanding of game design as well as using the advantages of necessary loopholes in the code. Highly recommended for SAO fans. Another classic is the .hack series, although it's been years since I watched it.
