Try THIS in the Spring! Floating Smelt

This is a variation of the surfboard minnow that I like to use to imitate spring smelt that die off on their way to spawn. This can happen naturally or because they were chopped up by the dam. Either way, trout and salmon love to feed on the easy prey that is floating on the surface of the water. Also, a BWO pattern is always what lands me my first fish off a dry fly. Give this one a try if you have smelt around, or swap out the colors to recreate just about any baitfish out there for bass, salmon, or saltwater species.

craft fur would be another good one, or any synthetic fur alternative like EP fibers. You'll just need something with longer fibers. Could get away with some dubbing as well. So long as it will match the length you are looking for. Last suggestion is, do you have a long haired pet?🤣

Definitely look up this pattern "Surfboard baitfish" for a slat water version. This is just made for trout modeled after the salt water pattern

Chartreuse and white is a good one, all white, pink, and blacks are all go tos for me.

You mentioned that the point of the hook is pointed down for this #flies . So this tie should be vertical?

Yup It should stack from left to right when adding deer hair, the hook will help add weight to have the pattern float properly. I did it like this the first time but I didn’t like how it was demonstrated on video couldn’t see it as well. Hopefully this didn’t just make it more confusing
