This prayer is at the heart of the Lent for Orthodox Christians.

My habit it that my knees hit the floor before my feet. I don't have a very high bed, maybe 16 inches (40 cm) above the floor. So I just roll out of bed onto my knees by the bed. The physical act of getting out of bed that way means I don't get up on my feet till I've reviewed the day & made a morning offering. I do the reverse at night: kneel beside the bed for examination if conscience & review of the day, then climb into bed. The physical habit means I never forget prayer first thing in the morning or last thing at night.

Thank you. I want to embrace this Lent with my whole heart because I've been stuck in a bad cycle of feeling awful about various aspects of my past. I'm not even a Catholic, but times like this make me feel like you all have the right idea about confession. Some of these things that bother me I've never disclosed to another human being. Even though I've repented and tried to move on, it still feels like I'm carrying around this ugliness inside of me.

Even though you are not Catholic, you can go to a priest, say you are not Catholic, but that you would like to unburden your conscience and receive some counseling. Although he would not be able to give you absolution, perhaps he could give you a fatherly blessing. Peace be with you.

@@doloresnolan5949 Here is the "Prayer of St. Ephrem" as Matt presented it: O God, be merciful to me a sinner (x3) O Lord, Master of my life, grant that I may not be afflicted with the spirit of sloth, acquisitiveness, ambition and vain talking. (Prostration, which is kneeling and touching the forehead to the floor, then standing and making the Sign of the Cross). Instead bestow upon me your servant the spirit of purity, humility, patience, and love. (Prostration). Yes, O Lord and King, grant me the grace to see my own sins and not to judge my brethren. (Prostration). For You are blessed forever and ever. Amen. O God, be gracious to me a sinner, and have mercy on me (x 12). Metany, bowing at the hips, touching the floor with the fingertips of the right hand, then standing and making the sign of the cross. Yes, O Lord and King, grant me the grace to see my own sins and not to judge my brethren (Prostration) For You are blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

I'm from Durban, since it's phonetically the same as Turpin, I thought I would chime in. I am descended of Byzantine Zulus fron the Middle East where we were known as Israelites of Juda or Zunda or Sudan. That makes us somewhat Eastern Catholics as we were army recruits of the Byzantine Roman Empire until its death. My great ancestor called Ezana refused Roman Catholicism in Ethiopia and built Lalibela churches by killing his brother who was pro-Rome. My dream is to unite the Ethiopian Orthodox Church with the Catholic Church, once and for all. This kingdom is called by my surname = Zakwe or Zwane or Zanj or Azania or Mathanias (why Zululand is called ElikaMthaniya = Elika = Land of, Mthaniya = Mathanias.) Also called Bekwena or Kwena people or Cohena or Cohen. My tribal libation of Ngweni or Kweny (like Didier Drogba) or Ngoni or Cohen - that is how you pronounce Cohen = Like Gwen with an "N" in front and an "ee" at the end. This is the same amongst all African tribes, called Bantu. Ngweni means Priest. We came from Hebron or Mamre or Caria'Tharba = Galela-Ndaba which is African Bantus. The city stayed Caleb, the dog - where words such as Carib or Caribbean, Gariep or Magaye (called Cele in South Africa or Cerethi in Bible or Michael) or Ngai or Khambule or Hamul/Chamul come from, Othoniel + Axa and Levites on the outskirts what we called Molefe. If you say Ngweni out loud when you see anyone from my tribe, you will get smiles all around even if they were initially mad at you. It is a peace instrument. You see, the Ottomans pushed us into lower Africa and Islamicised the North and some in South. That is why we had Shakan wars. So, is my Greek linkage legit or what?

So I do something sort of like this when I pray the Rosary. As I say the rosary I walk during the Hail Mary and after the Hail Mary I do a lunge ; so 10 Hail Mary's, 10 lunges. I then walk in place for the Glory Be and the Fatima prayer, and then postulate or burpee 5 times after each Mystery is revealed & The Our Father is prayed. It is an amazing way to focus on the Rosary and to also put the physical body into the Rosary. Great content.

For Lent it might also be helpful to put away all music except Christian music. There are radio stations dedicated soley to Christian music, which is lovely and has positive messages. Keeping it on brings me closer to God everyday.

To Magdalena Plese: I keep hearing that the primary sacrifice the good Lord asks of us is to fulfill our duties for our state in life joyfully, without complaining. That alone can be a HUGE sacrifice. Complaining is too easy.

The Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian O Lord and Master of my life, a spirit of idleness, despondency, ambition, and idle talking give me not. Prostration. But rather a spirit of chastity, humble-mindedness, patience, and love bestow upon me Thy servant. Prostration. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my failings and not condemn my brother; for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen. Prostration. Then twelve “reverences” (bows from the waist with the sign of the Cross). With each one we say: O God, cleanse me a sinner. And then the entire prayer: O Lord and Master of my life, a spirit of idleness, despondency, ambition, and idle talking give me not. But rather a spirit of chastity, humble-mindedness, patience, and love bestow upon me Thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my failings and not condemn my brother; for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen. Prostration

@@isaiah3872 it means "may his prayer be with us". Regarding Mary, we say slotha aman. Some time we say: "the name of the saints/apostles" following slothe/slotha (male/female) shuro tehwe'lan, meaning may his/hers prayer be like a wall around us.

Do i have to sing it? But I don’t think my family or husband would appreciate singing near 5 am. Also my mother is super Pentecostal and very anti catholic...my husband who’s atheist is supportive though but I still don’t think he’d like the 5am alarm 😂 God bless
@GardenMinistry.
@GardenMinistry. 3 жыл бұрын
My husband is Catholic but isn't as devoted as i am, so I can see how that would make it hard to worship at home. I usually go to a room in the house unattended by anyone, and do my prayer while he is engaged on something else or out. I might just give them a heads up so you are uninterrupted. You don't have to go into detail about what you are doing, just say it's prayer time, or time dedicated to God. And just remember that standing up for your faith, whether it's family or strangers, is very powerful and is expected to happen. Like in these versus: Matthew 5:10: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." And Mathew 5:11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

@@mimi_j you're welcome ❤️ I think many of us go through a journey similar to yours, even when we are already baptized in the Catholic church. I was absent for many years, until my children were born, and the pull to Christ is greater now then ever. I know many couples who are from totally different faiths, and that doesn't stop them from being devoted Catholics. No one and nothing can separate us from God's love. I wish you the best, and hope you do join rcia and that you love it as much as we do.

@22:20 negative. This is contrary to consensus of philosophers on epistemology. The LESS properly basic your ontology the better you prevent yourself from being deceived. Ex. One has a properly basic belief that God does exist Ex. One has a properly basic belief that God does NOT exist Logically only one person is correct. The correct ontology: One should NOT hold a properly basic belief on the existence of god.

"I was awful to my daughter because I was stressed out." Did y'all catch the excuse in that statement? "Because I wanted time to myself." But see, the whole point is to forget oneself & love the other by willing the other's good more than one's own. Jesus was exhausted, but 'moved with pity...' served the crowds who followed him everywhere so he couldn't even sleep or eat or pray regularly. This introvert's takeaway: Don't ever do a podcast about faith. The plank in your eye will keep knocking over the microphone. (I reckon my faults are visible enough to the people closest to me. No need to have a world of carpenters assessing the lumber hanging off my face.)
