He's so self-pitiful, he takes himself too seriously and is very competitive. When you spend too much time trying to be *the* best instead of trying to do your best, you fall short and get disappointed to the high expectations you set for yourself.

Most artists are self critical, but it can help us improve because we are aware of what is missing usually. Eugene has that typical artist personality, (this is coming from an artist) so i was not surprised. Most of us are perfectionists. I wouldn't call all of us competitive, but we like to challenge ourselves by seeing how well we can do and improve, especially if we're very passionate about what we do. This goes for anything we (stereotypical artists lol) do in our life, not just art.
