I'm surprised nobody mention that the "emergency life jacket" wouldn't work. as the shirt got wet and saturated, the cloth inside the lid of the bottle would begin to absorb water and deposit it in the bottles. Eventually, the bottles would have enough water in them to make it difficult to remain above water.

You are lost at sea because a bad storm messed up your boat and happened to take the container of life jackets overboard with it (yes they are usually bolted down but this is for a dire emergency you dolt) so you use the large empty soda bottles to make an improvised life jacket. If it seems stupid. but it works and keeps you alive, it can't be that stupid.
