I just want to say that I’ve actually been on one of these court shows before, and it was 100% fake and mostly improvised on set. They have some “evidence” prepped beforehand, but ultimately you get a set up and a character and they let you decide how to handle the case amongst yourselves. Now the episode could be based on a true story, but the people on the show didn’t actually do anything. So unless this show is miraculously somehow real unlike all the others, this is all made up, so no reason to feel bad for making fun of a televised improv show Jarvis!
@etherealsky7078 Жыл бұрын
Not to be a party pooper, but it is so obvious (at least to me) that these are 100% fake that I don’t understand why Jarvis or the commenters are talking about what’s happening in the show as if there’s an ounce of truth in these stories. Maybe it’s because I’m not American and not used to american reality TV, but those are definitely some _very_ bad actors here and not real people with real struggles.

I'm also not a lawyer, so I'm perfectly credentialed to weigh in on this. Whether or not a large sum of money was spent on plastic surgery has nothing to do with this. Its weird that so much detail was focused on that. The accusation is that the money generated for the funeral didn't go towards the funeral. So even if she just pocketed the money instead getting plastic surgery, it's still just as wrong (maybe not legally, but certainly morally). The only thing that really mattered here was if she could prove that that the funeral did in fact add up to the amount "donated." I mean, I know WHY on a TV show we had to swim in the endless ocean of scandalous plastic surgery, but it really didn't need to be mentioned at all. Even a footnote would just be excessive.
@katatat20302 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems like that was just to add an extra moral angle to it, to make it seem extra bad because plastic surgery is dumb to him?
@lionguardant5468 Жыл бұрын
I AM a lawyer (albeit not in the US) and while yeah, it's pretty morally wrong to spend money that was "donated" for a specific purpose on something else, legally speaking if there's no piece of paper saying "I am loaning you $6,000 so you can do a memorial service for our dead brother", there's no legal means of showing that you *didn't* donate the money. When there are cases where family members have given money to each other, generally the law assumes that there was no intention for an agreement to be legally enforceable. The moral is, make sure you don't rely on the honour system, even if it's family!

@@lionguardant5468I’m NOT a lawyer and this is what I was wondering the whole time.. again obviously it’s a show so none of this is real but we’re this to be real court wouldn’t the claims be dropped almost immediately simply bc there is no written evidence that this money was meant to go specifically towards the funeral and had not just been donated to a grieving family member? Like if you give someone money for a singular purpose and want to make sure it is enforceable that they only use it for that purpose there needs to be a written or otherwise formal statement of it that can be taken to court right?

Fun fact: the only requirements to be a Supreme Court Justice are US citizenship and confirmation by the Senate. Additionally one current member has NEVER been a judge prior to appointment (Elana Kagen, former dean of Harvard Law, and former solicitor General to POTUS under Obama, note this makes her extremely qualified as she's a legal scholar as opposed to a trial lawyer or judge). As someone who used to work at a funeral home, genuinely a little funny to see how shocked Jarvis was by people making light of the death. I worked at a pretty high end funeral home and I could say about 70% of the funerals I worked with, nobody gave a shit lol. People would come in cargo shorts and Trump t-shirts (once, in the very sad case of a very young woman's passing, someone showed up in a rainbow sequin minidress) and spend the whole night yucking it up and telling stories with a whole ass dead body in the room. Some would even play loud ass club music when they knew other funerals were taking place in the building! Just to give a little insight that, unfortunately, most funerals are not the somber events we assume they'll be, particularly when a lot of extended family is involved (hell, sometimes the close family doesn't care either)

@@caithenry8429 normally I'd agree since everyone grieves differently, but this high end funeral home I worked at was in Miami, with majority of our clients being Cuban and Venezuelan families from Doral (very hoity toity area). Being Cuban myself I know that that isn't really part of our culture, the way these families were is more akin to how we do kid's birthdays, letting the kids run around and do whatever while the adults sit around gossiping and drinking. Since I worked with all the funeral directors who had appointments with these families, I know a lot of the families didn't give a damn and only had a funeral out of obligation (and even those who did care admitted that their extended family really didn't). So most of the behavior I saw from these funerals was just kinda trashy and disrespectful as opposed to people celebrating the life of a loved one. Definitely sad since a majority of our decedents were older people and from my experience people care a lot less about the death of someone older

I'm not Irish, but I know some people try to make things lighthearted during these occasions. I went to a funeral of someone who specifically stated they wanted their funeral to be a celebration and that no one should wear black, only their most glamorous clothes. My last two grandparents were cremated I just gotta say and there wasn't a casket or burial plot but it was still expensive to buy a container, to get them cremated, to rent the space, go out to lunch, buy flowers. It was actually a normal funeral without a casket or body. So yeah, less expensive but it wasn't the cheapest thing. Some people probably spend money on putting family up in hotels or catering or music if youre having a celebration of life. Its not like there just ISNT a funeral.

When I was little, my mom worked as a singer at a funeral home. So when people asked for music, usually hymns and stuff like that, she would sing in a room adjacent to the one where the actual service was happening. And someone would accompany her on piano, and the sound would be played in the service room. Because I was homeschooled during that time, she would take me with her and like set me up with a coloring book and some Polly pockets in the staff break room. And whenever we would leave to go to the funeral home, she would be like, “Let’s go put the ‘fun’ in ‘funeral!’” She was respectful to everyone grieving, but I think she just wanted to be a little kid friendly for me I guess??

When a person is cremated, you don't skip the funwral ceremony. You still have the procession with a little car, flowers and a priest (if it's a catholic funeral). You still have to put the urn in the grave and all. So you only skip out on the cost of a casket which is much more expensive than an urn.
