The technique has been around for a while. I learned about it from the guys at House Of Kolor. You used a good color scheme for the base. Came out nice. You can also use those plastic ketchup and mustard bottles you would see in dinners. They give you good control over your line width. You can use them to get horizontal lines on the sides of the vehicle.

After some fine tuning, this could be used as a way to “mask off” fine details like old school pinstripe or flames for a dip project. You could do one of the fade dips and then put hot rod pinstripes with a thicker soap, then the shadow black over it.

@Adam-uu5pt
@Adam-uu5pt 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you would want to clear over it to make sure it doesn't lift on the edges and to protect it. To clarify, you would use the plaatidip specific clear, not enamel or any other type of paint. They sell multiple different protective top coats on the site, or you could use the dip armor ceramic coating In response to the question of longevity, sure it won't last decades like a well cared for paint job would, but done right and with the higher end dip products like proline, you could hit the 10 year mark and beyond.. but that's not the intention of the product. It's for people to have an affordable way to change the look, with the option of peeling it off and doing something new or going back to factory at any time. Once you do it once and get a feel for it, your last coat will still be drying and you'll already be thinking about what you want to do next.. it's addictive 😆 And honestly you can do a vehicle 3-4 times for the cost of 1 professional paint job. If you chose to not have any expensive pearls or options and just stick with a solid color.. you could easily do 20x color changes for the price of painting once

If you're gonna do this next time, maybe try dipping in a big brush in soap and use it to splash in all directions. Just to add some dynamic. This turned out very well the shift comes trough much stronger than usual. Also you can use petroleum gel (vaseline) in the same way, except it's much thicker and you can actually quite literally draw cool designs across if you have patience. Then clean it with a rag and some alcohol or medical benzene.

The rough edges between the masked and unmasked areas looks like a peel waiting to happen. I'd probably hit it with a couple coats of gloss or satin clear to seal it up and maybe fuse the layers back together. This does make me wonder if you could use a liquid mask that isn't so runny, one that could be brushed on and wouldn't run due to gravity. My first thought is corn syrup. Paint it on in a cool, shaded area, spray the dip then go bake the car in a hot sunny location to soften the syrup and pressure wash the car. My second thought is to use a gelatin like aspic. It is used in food service as display liner or as a glossy top coat for certain foods. It gels really firm and can easily be melted, strained and reused. To use this, you would likely need to build it up by brushing on a coupe layers in an air conditioned spray booth and a sunny summer afternoon south of the Mason, but it should work a treat.

I believe soap is used mostly because it's cheap and easy to find, but I'm willing to bet you can get the effect you're looking for using Glycerol/Glycerin. It's the main thickening agent used in soap, but it doesn't leave the same soapy residue after cleaning it off.

Did a friends car back in the 80's. Painted it with random bright greens and yellow. He had a pneumatic upholstery glue gun that spat glue like a big web pattern for bonding fabric to a large flat surface. We loaded it with Vaseline and "webbed" the car before painting gloss black. Cleaned then shot clear. It was unique but not worth repeating.

Liquid masking has been around a hundred years. You can also buy the stuff which is designed to peel off like rubber cement but it doesn't harden or stick like glue. The same use of liquid masking is used to make a fake wet look on flat surfaces with big water droplets only and spraying the paint from a hard angle about 80 degrees and then let the water evaporate naturally.

So I definately see a DipWash Concentrate coming out of this. Cuts down on shipping costs. Also allows for Foam Cannons to be a little better in usage.

Reminds me of an adult version of those crayon scrape art things we use to do in elementary school. Dig it!

Makes the color shift pop so much more when it’s coming through that black. Looked amazeballs. 🔥

That’s awesome my hobby is nice hotrods and trucks. I love that look on the mustang. My adrenaline starts pumping when it comes to hotrods on how they sound, drive, and look. I come from a background of my father being a mechanic and my mother being a street racer in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

I’ve seen a vid on spray painting acrylic RC Car bodies and in it water spray bottles were used. Same idea but quite a different effect. This looks nice.

Looks way better than I thought. Wonder what it would look like with another hypershift in place of the black.
