Today I'm in the Arctic Circle in Finland (close to Rovaniemi) in the middle of winter. I'm trying an authentic Finnish Sauna for the first time! As a southern girl, I'm not used to the cold, so I'm really scared about what I'll do next: roll in the snow and swim in ice-cold water (also called winter swimming or polar plunge)! :O
In Finland, there are a lot of saunas, and the first one we try is a traditional Finnish sauna at an actual Finnish home (the best experience ever! :D). Then we go to a lakeside sauna in the Finnish country side, which is actually a barrel sauna (round floating sauna), in the middle of a frozen lake. By the way, I know that the traditional sauna etiquette means you have to get naked with strangers, but this is a family friendly KZbin channel, so we'll be keeping our swimsuit on!
Also, this is the LAST video of my Finland series. I loved this series and Finland and I'm so grateful of having experienced this beautiful, and very underrated country!

You can actually feel really relaxed when you go into the cold water. Just concentrate in your breathing and take long deep breaths and the initial shock will go away :) After a while it makes you feel really relaxed just like meditation so the key is to stay in the water for a bit longer, like 15 - 60 seconds :)

If you're still in the Helsinki area, 1 hour away from Helsinki, in Kotka, there's a glass sauna right next to the ocean - I went there with friends, and it's amazing! You can see the cold outside while being in the hot sauna. There's also a **cave** sauna there which I haven't went to. It's in Santalahti.

Finn and a avid Sauna goer here! The rolling around in snow thing really gets your blood going and it's refreshing as any! It also comes with this old belief that when you go from hot to cold and hot again, you are gonna get tougher, healthier and stronger. Like hardening steel!

Cold water dips also help to burn certain kind of stress hormones, because, well, body reacts quite heavily to the shock consuming them in the process. Luckily my local swimming hall has a cold water pool (8C), so I can get the therapeutic effect without traveling farther. And all swimming halls in Finland obviously have saunas, so you can heat yourself back.

About the snow feeling like needles: in a snow storm the snow can travel so fast it acts like sandpaper and actually scrapes your skin off.

Nice, that was a real sauna. I have always talked with my friends that real sauna is heated by firewood and electric sauna is just a sauna simulator :D Fun fact: the biggest part of the water that appears on skin in sauna is not sweat but just concentrated water from the air after you throw water onto the rocks. Your skin is much colder than the air, so the water concentrates on it. Throwing water and the steam coming from it is called "löyly". If I understood you're from France, in French way that could be written like "le ulu" but pronounce them together, not like "le" would be an article and a little stop after it.

actually the heat of the sauna does not increase when you pour water into the stove. the temperature of the sauna decreases. the water vapor coming from the stove is hot, which causes a false sensation of the heat rising. that's the basic thermal physics of heat in sauna 🤓😉

We don't feel temperatures. We feel heat transfer. Steam conduct much better than dry air.

I do this to alleviate my headaches. As a person who does this somewhat on the regular - neoprene socks are a game changer. My feet hurt so much without them it's unbearable. With them on you can actually swim, not just dip in. It's a strange feeling when your feet feel normal and everything else is cold. I know some people enjoy it without the socks, but I enjoy the cold, not the pain. Enjoyed the video! Very brave - most Finns never even try this.

Great video! And as a Finn, I approve that you did the proper sauna with proper heat (of course, natives don't use the swimsuit or towel in the sauna but I guess that was for filming). Also, how the snow feels on your skin while rolling in the snow totally depends on the temperature of the snow. In worst case it feels like rolling on crushed glass, in best case if feels almost like powder on your skin. And it feels cold in every case, obviously.

You are brave. I'm a Finn and I have never done that. I have only rolled in snow a few times after sauna. There are only 25 people in the world who have swum one mile in ice water. One of them is ELINA MÄKINEN, 29, from Finland. She has done it more than once. She swam Svalbard ice mile in -0,8 degree Celsius water temperature. It took her about 30 minutes. After that she was trembling like a leaf in storm for a long time. Her brother has done ice mile too. Elina has also spent 60 minutes sitting in 2 degree Celsius water. She once sat in icy water for 45 minutes so that scientist could monitor her. After 45 minutes they ordered her to stop. She could have gone longer. You can find some videos of her on YT.

When I was a child in northern Wisconsin my parents took us kids to our Finnish grandparents' for sauna every weekend. We loved rolling in the snow afterwards. When we moved to California, one of the first things my father did was build a sauna in the garage. I guess you didn't try swatting your back with spruce twigs. That is also invigorating.

Great job actually doing it! Pro tip: swim shoes. Prevents your feet from getting too cold, and you can concentrate more on enjoying the experience. Take them off in sauna and place them next to you to get them warm. Put them on before leaving, so your feet will stay warm on the walk to the water.

Also many use swimming/diving gloves to keep hands warm. And it gets easier when you focus on your breathing and stay quiet. Just count to ten, next time to fifteen, and so on. In the end you can actually swim in the cold water. But you did great already!😊

+80 celsius is absolute minimum for me in sauna, no matter how small sauna it is lol. i have been in +130 celsius, had to heat it like 8 hours lol and someone forgot yoghurt can (plastic?) and it melt in there lol

One small detail: moisture on your skin in sauna is not sweat, it's condensed steam from the water you poured on the rocks. If you don't do that your skin stays dry, because all sweat vaporizes immediately.

Hello. Sorry for being late, but I live in Finland and recommend you to go visit fazer facktory and try out snacks there and see how they are made. Also Finnish chips are very famous and you can visit Taffel factory. I actually have visited them all and Recommend you to do the same thing. . If you want to explore more of the culture you should visit Å-land and Hamina for historic things. In hamina is europes biggest National flag and many historic things from world war 1 and 2 also from winter war where we fought the Russian and win. The russians started the war and blamed on the Finland called "mainilan laukaukset" when russia shot artillery to their own side and blame it on Finland. I think 100 C is too much. Around 70 C is enough and then you can stay longer in the sauna and throw water more :) then just go out for a while, ice dipping is just optional :)

Your travel videos are really nice but - please put a caption on this video for older people or people not fit not to do this. Sauna increases your heart rate and blood flow to the skin but when you rapidly cool in snow or near freezing water there is significant redistribution of blood to the core with rapid increase in blood pressure - which can be very dangerous - can cause a heart attack if you are old or not fit a person ( this is called a cold shock response )

You don't really have to splash water on the stove every couple of minutes. Either a full bowl or a little less is thrown into the stove, as everyone likes. More water is thrown only after the biggest puddles have passed, so to speak.
