As a Scot, I try to explain Afternoon Tea and High Tea. Afternoon Tea traditionally is small sandwiches and maybe other savory things, followed by cakes like Victoria Sponge (named after the Queen) and Scones with clotted cream and jam. High Tea is more of a meal, often hot food served with tea. In Scotland you can even have a Fish Tea consisting of fish and chips, peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea. Strange as it seems, the word Tea in many parts of the UK also means the evening meal! ..... Us Brits are strange, but we love our tea :))

When I was a child in the 1960's, visiting my grandparents is what was the North Riding of Yorkshire, meals were still served at traditional times. Breakfast was cooked and the main meal of the day was at lunch time. Tea was late afternoon when my grandfather came back from work. It was known as "tea time" by everyone back then. "Tea" would consist of sandwiches and cakes and of course tea! Supper was around nine o'clock and would be cold ham (which my granddad called "Tiger") and cheese and more tea. My parents also had the main meal at lunch time until about 1970 when we stared having an evening meal as my mum was working. What was the common practice has now completely gone in British culture and nobody has "Tea time" in the way we did as children. So that tradition ended fifty years ago and is all but forgotten. Traditional High Tea is a thing of speciality tea shops and still a marvellous but lost from home culture sadly.

Sri Lanka is a wonderful country for a holiday. Spent 3 weeks travelling around including visiting Mackwoods which was the original tea plantation. Coffee died off because of a pest and a Scots man changed the country forever by moving the plantations to tea. Ceylon tea was pretty much the foundation of the British Empire that is, "I'll just put on the kettle".
@PckLyA4 жыл бұрын
"changed the country forever" is true in more ways than one. These highlands were partly montane forest which got cut down. The other part was people's land which the authorities confiscated because they couldn't prove kinship (the notion of deeds was not existent in Sri Lankan kingdoms as all land belonged to the king, and this was used as a guise for land acquisition). Moreover, the whole demographics of the highlands were altered. Native Sri Lankans flatly refused to work for the British plantations, and therefore the Brits imported hundreds of thousands of laborers from Southern India. To this day, almost all the workers working in tea fields are descended from these Indian laborers, and they still unfortunately live in squalid conditions as one of the most impoverished groups in the country.

@Dev De Silva The Indians brought to work in the plantations were indentured labourers, not slaves. Know the difference. You also forget to mention that after Ceylon as it was then became independent in 1948 these people became stateless. Under the Srimavo Shastri pact, nearly half a million were repatriated back to India. It is relatively recently that the remainder have been granted SL citizenship.
@chamindadecosta39704 жыл бұрын

From Tea Time Magazine: "Delectable scones, tea sandwiches, and cakes are the hallmark of an afternoon tea, which is served in mid-afternoon. A high tea, however, includes much more substantive fare, such as meat, fish, and egg dishes, as well as breads and desserts, and is offered in the early evening."👌🏻 Majority of places do Afternoon Tea... they may call it High Tea... but I've yet to truly experience one here in the UK. 😂😂😂 Yours was like a step up from an afternoon tea, which is usually only cold sandwiches, cakes, scones, etc. Looked delish and Definitely great value! Something like that would easily set you back £25-50 at a posh place like that. Also, if someone invites you over for 'tea' in the UK... politely find a way to clarify if they mean the beverage and a chat... or a full dinner spread. 😉😳😂 Lastly, the whole pinkies out thing is only in the US😂😂... if you do that in the UK, it's a strong sign you're not from here and you may get some people rolling their eyes at you 😁😳 😂 Another great video! Thanks so much ❤️😍

Afternoon Tea is the traditional 4pm serving of tea with a few small sandwiches or cakes. Maybe a scone and cream and jam. High Tea was a Victorian thing, a meal originating in the nursery of a big house but which spread throughout British society but did retain an association with children. High Tea may have some hot dishes, particularly ones involving toast. As a 53 year old English chap I would say that you were having Afternoon Tea. Afternoon tea, a ‘light’ meal of sandwiches and cakes (a bit like the bus tour you took on a double decker bus in London, only lighter, that was a bit over the top). High tea traditionally includes more ‘substantial’ and savoury items, like the samosas you had. When I was younger (in the 1960s and working class) I equated what I’d read about high tea with what us more down-to-earth lot called ‘supper’. My grandparents used to have a very light tea meal at around 4pm, then a savoury, but still relatively light meal, called supper around 8pm. No evening dinner, the main meal was taken at midday. For descriptions of high tea you probably need to read some Enid Blyton children’s stories.
@maxwellfan554 жыл бұрын
Helen. Interesting points. You are probably about my age (I was born mid 50's). Typically at home, 1960's breakfast was usually a fairly light affair, cereal/toast, tea, milk, or sometimes a cooked meal if time allowed. Cereal boxes were studied excitedly as they often contained interesting facts about footballers, aircraft etc, also things to cut out and collect, our family consisting only of boys. Not sure what applied to girls? Break-time at school consisted of milk, or if you were very lucky, orange juice in a clear half-pint bottle (rare and highly prized!). Dinner (at school or at home) was mid-day and substantial, sometimes attended by father weekday if work allowed. "Tea-time" was a nourishing but lighter cooked meal or salad served around 5pm, or as soon as father returned from work. We would hope the call to table wouldn't correspond with a favourite TV programme like the Flintstones, Treasure Island, or Top Cat! "Elevenses", was tea or coffee with a sweet or savoury snack eaten of course at 11am, popular but regarded as a treat mostly for adults. This was rural mid, and south east England. The terms "lunch", "luncheon" or "supper" were rarely if ever used, except, as you say in Enid Blyton books which I read avidly as a child. As far as I remember, afternoon tea was for posh people who didn't work, but lower classes did indulge as and when time and opportunity permitted, and very popular with excellent home-made cake and scones. Everything except bread was home-made, tea was always leaves and strainer, as I still insist on today, allowing tea to brew in pots, never from tea-bags. Some things remain sacred. Mealtimes were mostly taken in silence or with restrained, polite conversation between adults where manners were were strictly observed and scrutinised. So as a child I was often both scared and hungry at these events, fearing them more if guests or grandparents were present. Usually I would burst into tears if I spilled something, made worse because I was immediately scolded. The remainder of the meal was spent in humiliation and absolute silence as eyes looked down on me with unsympathetic displeasure. Except perhaps my brothers, delighting in my misfortune. When my parents lived abroad I was sent away to boarding school at 11 years old, where we had a cooked breakfast every day. "Light tea" was around 4 pm, consisting of milk, plain biscuits, or very occasionally a savoury such as half a stale pie which was not particularly popular, but broke up the time between meals.
