The older generations are odd like that. Why make food bland af, when you lose taste buds has you age. I love seasoned foods. My mum didn't, so I agree with you.

The average person couldnt afford spices, even tea was locked away in little safes as it was so expensive. Most ordinary people lived on bread until the turn of the 20th century and the pallete was stifled during the second world war due to rationing.. In the early 1980s most kids like me live on baked beans on toast most of the week as it was all we could afford due to strikes and industrial action. Alot of the foods appear bland but were very indulgent so things like scotch eggs and pork pies made an appearance at christmas or if someone was getting married. Thankfully.. I think today we have a wonderful variety of foods and tastes, some of the classics are also improving! (Pork and pickle pie or Cumberland Scotch Egg - much more flavour)

The uk has different laws and regulations than the USA when it comes to food. So our food has to have a lot less fat and sugar than the American counter parts, meaning it tastes blander...

You can get pork pie with all sorts of extras added in like chutney, cheese. And garlic on the pastry. The basic supermarket own brand cheap versions aren't great and often have quite a bit of gelatin to fill in for the meat they cheaped out on, and could do with using nicer pastry (like a proper flakey one or something).

When i make Trifle I usually slice Swiss Role and layer the bottom (giggity). Then, make cherry jelly with brandy and soak the swiss role. Let it set, then rasperry jelly. Then strawberry jelly.. Then whipped cream.. Then dream topping.. Then crushed cadbury flake on the top. Its delicious 😋

Banana Moonpies are my fave, when i went to UK i tried Irn Bru and it was really good, plus custard cremes, the crisps i found were to salty seasoned for my taste...oh and we have the lil crackers with icing, here is called "florecitas" (flower buds or little flowers) their soo good

I miss the old wagon wheels we had in Canada when I was a little kid. I verified with my mom that I wasn't misremembering. They were way bigger than now, better quality chocolate, good but mild flavoured marshmallow, and a sweet but mild biscuit/wafer/graham cracker thing sandwiching the marshmallow. Now it's small and super bland all around and waaay too sweet. I want to try the UK version, see if it's anything close.

English-Canadian food isn't really seasoned either. I grew up eating honey glassed chicken with lemon, salmon with lemon, pork with apple sauce...My mum made a stuffed potato that had paprika on it when she tried to season anything. Cloves in beef, that was about it.

You should try Tunnocks snowballs! I love them and think they're nicer than the teacakes but they are harder to get hold of (in the the south west anyway, not sure where you are). Also, McCoy's crisps and lots of Cadbury chocolate.

For American snacks, try some things from Trader Joe’s if you can get them sent over. The dark chocolate peanut butter cups, peppermint chocolate dipped Joe-Joes (Oreos knock-off) they have at Christmas, Thai Lime and a Chili almonds, unusual dried fruits...anything else non-perishable.

Make your own pork pie! It's like a pork "mince", with more spices than they use (think like a breakfast sausage, but a spicy breakfast sausage), that's then wrapped in puff pastry, which they stole from the French, and you can either spend three days making it, or you should be able to buy frozen. Cup of buttery pastry, cup of savory sausage. I have made myself hungry. Again.

European food to American food is def something to adjust to because the stateside alot of things are artificial,lots of sugars and things put in when you go to Europe alot of things are made with less sugars and preservatives
