The heart thing works, but it does have some rules to make it work. Firstly your lens matters. A prime lens is needed (I've never managed to get it to work on any zoom lens, not even slightly). 35mm on a crop frame or 50mm on a full frame camera. You want a good low Aperture lens too. F1.8 works, F1.4/1.2 is way better, but also very expensive. My 35mm f1.8 was near enough £200 at the time and considered a 'budget' option. The actual heart shaoe has to be super small. those silly funky hole punch things for kids work well enough, but it's a little trial an error to figure out the size you need to not get that effect with just sticking a frame round the shot. Lastly is actually getting the bokeh effect. To get the best bokeh takes a lot of fiddling, but for the purpose of this just wack the camera into aperture priority mode. (A on nikon and I think its AV on canon, no idea with sony). set the only changeable setting, which will be your f-stop, to the lowest possible number. That will be your 1.8/1.4/1.2 depending on your lens. Let the camera figure out the rest of the required settings to get a shot with that specific f-stop in place. Still easier to just buy a lens bokeh shape changer thing for your specific lens, than to make one. Ebay has them for like £1

It DOES work. I've had photographers take photos where a string of lights in front of us were turned into stars. I have a pic of the photog showing us the image and you can see the star cutout duct-taped to his lens. You just have to know how to achieve bokeh first.

Hi Safiya! For the Bokeh thing - you need a lens that creates a shallower depth of field, meaning you need a lens with a very open aperture. You used a 100mm f/2.8L (if I'm correct) and a 55-250 f/4.0-5.0, which is too closed for this effect. Try it with a 50mm f/1.8 and also use it at f/1.8 and it should work better. Also you don't need to separate Tyler that far from the background when you use a 50mm lens. Just thought I'd drop that in :)

Stephanie Chenoweth You could, but you need to be really far away. Bokeh always looks different and kicks in differently on every lens depending on its focal length and aperture.

That's kind of the point as well. These "hacks" aren't really hacks in the typical idea of them. They're just knowing how to use a camera and editing software to make it look better, which isn't a "hack". The odds are extremely likely that if you already know about photography then you know about the bokeh effect. That being said, Bokeh is mostly determined by the aperture. You can achieve it with f/2.8, but it's far more ideal to use f/1.8 or f/1.4. The faster the lens, the better to get that blur. To get the effect she wanted, she should have been using f/1.8 and had Tyler standing at a decent distance from the lights. You'd want to have the focus set on Tyler far from the background that you want the bokeh. The distance from the background will determine how big the blur is.

Yeah. Normally when you walk backwards, especially near other people, you tend to hesitate in a way you don't normally when walking forwards. It means when you play the footage backwards, it shows the person walking forwards with a hesitation in each stride you don't normally see, which makes it look stiff and more robot like.

Yeah, I've 100% done this both with hand-made lens masks, and with ones I bought pre-made online. It's extremely simple, but you do need to know a few things: I do it using a 50 mm lens with the aperture wide open (smallest f number your lens will allow). When shooting this way, I set my camera to Aperture Priority (this allows me to choose the f stop, and the camera will adjust the shutter speed to compensate). Regardless, you can test first without the mask--if your photos are getting nice round bokeh blurs in the background details, you're ready to add the mask.

Ok listen up y’all bokeh seems to be some sacred art form thaT NOBODIES WANTS TO SHARE THE SECRETS TO! So, lemme be the one to spill the soup. First of all, you need the right lense for it! I use a 50mm with an (aperture?) of f/1.8. This makes the background blurry while keeping the subject nice and crisp! Secondly, play around with the size of the shape! It took me a while to figure out to not make it too big nor too small. Hope this helps whoever stumbles upon this comment :)

For the heart bokeh to work you need a much smaller cut out (like 1cm) and to set your camera on its lowest aperture setting! I use this technique all the time and it creates such cute pictures. Such a shame you didn't get the results you wanted :(

The heart bokeh works, you just need the proper settings and a LOT of space between the lights and subject and the subject and the camera. As well as the proper settings of course. It’s kinda confusing though lol I hate doing bokeh even if it is pretty.

I have a 50mm non zoom lense. If I put that lense on 1.2 to 2.4 ish and focus on the person an arm length in front of me the background gets blurry/bokeh. if that person is too dark I change the iso into a lower number. If that is not enough use a sready surface and let the lense be open for a longer time. OR just use s reflector like matte foil on cardboard to highlight the persons face if the light is in the background. or use professional lighting to highlight the face area *Et voilà.*

Yeah I think her lens is too wide- it needs to be a really narrow focus lens for closeups. I think. And the subject in front needs to be properly lit :D It's the lights in the background that will blur into bokeh :D

The walking backwards one might've looked better in flat shoes. The movement of weight in the high, chunky heels is distracting. I am impressed with the cup thing, though! When you started with the paper heart on the lens hack, before you pointed out the change in the bokeh lights, I thought you *were* going to be going for the faded out border. Covering part of the lens like that is how photographers used to do the multiple angles in one shot photos (think grad pics). Cover a portion of the lens, shoot, cover the opposite portion, re-shoot double exposure.

Well I’m definitely months late to this video, but for what it’s worth I taught myself how to do the heart shaped bokeh for a photography class project. It can be done...with very controlled lighting and the right lens! I had used a 50mm prime lens with a 1.8 aperture, the lights in the background need to be fairly far away and the subject will usually need it’s own source of light. Certainly not as easy as the hacks make it out to be, but I hope you give it another shot one of these days!

Good video! Tips on the bokeh thing: go further from the light. It will maximize the bokeh effect AND help them shaped like the 'frame' you placed in front of you. Using zoom lens works well, you put in on max zoom. So you're far from the lights, and the main object is closer to you than the lights.

@@JennzOrs in my experience, for the stair one after the camera slid to the wall part (the 'transition' part), the camera should be brough closer to the wall it became so dark they can rotate it 'smoothly' and they can use the darkened part to smoothen the jumpcut. Sorry, can't explain well, my brain is fried this morning and english isn't my first language.
