The pants life-vest thing actually does work, they taught us how to do this in basic, but that video didn't explain it well. You're not just beating the water, it's more of a scooping motion because you're scooping air into the pants. It failed here because 1) the original video didn't explain the scooping motion properly to begin with, and 2) the kiddie pool isn't deep enough. But it 100% does work if done right.

The pants life preserver really does work. I learned how to do it in lifeguard training back in high school. Except we were taught to capture air by flinging the pants opening over our heads and down into the water(Like when you submerge a cup upside down and catch an air bubble). Also, we were in a 12 ft (3.6ish meters) deep pool. You do a great job with the videos Kris!

I am a professional merchant mariner and can confirm that the pants-hack is based on something that actually works, although the way they do it is likely to cause you to be killed faster. Anyone who is curious about this should look up the navy sailor who fell overboard on an aircraft carrier at night in the ocean and survived for over 35 hours using this technique.

There is NO way a drowning person acts rationally in order to make this work. As soon as pure instinct kicks in it's even dangerous just to swim near one if you don't know exactly what you are doing. They will claw to you and drag you under water wildly kicking and beating.

I am genuinely surprised that the lighter, toothpaste goggle situation actually worked. 😱 And those underwater pictures actually looked kind of good, might have been better in a bigger pool, but you have to work with what you have, and the kiddie pool worked great. 😁 Jessica and Kevin best assistants ever! Soap works better and you rub it around well before dipping it in water to wash some of it out. This way it doesn’t burn your eyes but it still prevents the mask from fogging up, but do not rub it out or else it won’t work.

you do the toothpaste/lighter the first time after you buy a new mask, they have a protective plastic coating that fogs easily on the inside of the lens that you are getting rid of which makes any of your trip to trip anti fog methods work way better.

Former lifeguard here. The pants survival method does work (even in that kiddy pool). The idea is to scoop air in by holding the waistband with both your hands on the surface side of the pants and over the surface of the water scoop down towards your feet until full, never letting go of waist band. Then just hold the opening tightly down when full with a grip with at least one of your hands. The legs act as a makeshift life preserver around your neck. Fun fact for the dumb craft. 😅

The pants thing is actually true, when taking lifeguard training we were taught that if we were having difficulty swimming in any situation to use our clothes. You have to take them off, they'll either be wet or make them wetter because when the cloth is wet the threads get bigger and don't release air, then you catch air bubbles in them. For example, if you cup your hand you'll probably get an air bubble in it if you submerge it facing down. It sort of makes a life jacket.

I will admit the "hack" for the goggles was told to me multiple times at dive shops and by dive instructors. The lighter takes the plastic film off the glass goggles and the toothpaste is a very good defog, you can also put baby shampoo in before using them as a good defog. Most dive boats I go on do that. But spitting in them also works surprisingly well too if you don't have that stuff. (I am a certified scuba diver but others my have different opinions about it. this is just things I've done/been told)

Also you’d never do this for a drowning victim in their panicked state they’d never be able to do this or comprehend the mechanics while they’re trying to keep their head above the water; find anything that floats or “air” up the pants for them and swim it out to them keeping your distance as if you get too close they might try to use you to stay afloat. The goggles "craft", yeah, I'd call that more of a life hack. And that is a good life hack for snorkelers and scuba divers. I am a certified scuba diver(been a few years since I last went, so prolly need a refresher course) and they make anti-fog gel for goggles. My instructor told us that if we were ever tight and couldn't buy the gel that toothpaste would work. It's not quite as good as the gel but it works great for a much cheaper option. From what I remember, you don't need the lighter. Just rub the toothpaste around like you did and swish it in water to remove the excess. Then when it's all clear, you're good to go.

Also certified diver. Tempered glass goggles have a coating to protect the glass from scratches, that does fog it up though. So you can burn the protective film off and the toothpaste is used to remove the burnt residue and after 3 or 4 applications it should be fine, though as you said you should still use the defog jel.

yeah you never want to do the ligher thing. main reason your mask fogs is that there may be some mold release still on the lens. use non-abrasive toothpaste, i repeat NON-ABRASIVE toothpaste to scrub the lens. it might take several scrubbings to get it all. Generally you should use a lens defog gel or liquid. tear free shampoo works as well as does spit. though spit may not consitently work because it depends on the ph and such. i do find that sometimes purposfully having a bit of water in the mask helps with fog issues even with best defog products. all you have to do is swish your head a bit and its clear.

Kris: compliments shirt Me: literally wearing my absolute favorite silky feel hoodie, seems legit! After that I'm almost dying to every single shenanigans Kris and Co comes up with! Kevin being the best comedy sidekick he can when Kris is on a roll, marvelous! Flip-flop hack worked like a charm, well done and the feet looked perfectly good to me. The shower bag trick might have gone better with a smaller pointy object and a little less stab happy Kris... The pants as flotation devices... Here enters sister Jessica as the camera minion and lifeguard, she fits the roles perfectly! The pants trick probably failed due to little water and mostly because it being fresh water, as I believe that you need salt water to clog the tiny holes in the fabric. Valiant attempt and so dramatically reenacted! Foggy goggles success! Kris really loves that pool, I'm guessing a permanent one is on the to do list? Kris and Jessica mermaid cosplay? Do I have to beg, because I absolutely will beg for this to be realized! Underwater photoshoot, that absolutely broke me! Big thanks to Jessica for the camera work, I retract the minion comment earlier because the camera work was just perfect! From the start to the end, dry with fresh makeup on or water drenched with partially washed out makeup, Kris is absolutely gorgeous throughout including the "grimy" feet that follow the gorgeous standard as the rest of Kris! Thanks again to Jessica for being a good sister and helping Kris out with the video, thank you for making this possible! Using pants as a flotation device doesn't require salt water to work, they just have to get wet first. Then you have to capture air in them and hold the waist underwater so it doesn't escape. Denim or other heavy fabric probably works better than thinner fabric for holding air. In my high school swim class they actually made us practice this in a regular swimming pool except that we had to jump in with jeans on and then take them off and tie the knots and everything while we were in the deep end (i.e. what you might need to do if you fell in deep water with pants on). Also, we didn't beat the water, we just brought the jeans above the water line and captured some air.

Thank you for your lovely compliments Kris- and as a diver myself, an easier way then burning it and using toothpaste is to spit in them, wipe it around, dunk it and wash it out in water, and try to not breathe through your nose- it really does depend on different goggle styles, but it's a solid trick for if you forgot the spray on stuff :>

The pants thing works. It's part of basic swim qualification in Marine Corps boot camp 👍 I wouldn't expect it to work in 3" of water in a kiddie pool though, and it's easier to just pick up the open waist end, and scoop air from.. the air, to inflate than trying to throw air down into it. But, both ways to work.

Taught in Scouts too - had to do it for a swim or lifesaving badge. Works pretty darn well but yea, you need to be vertical to let the air go up.

I remember this being taught to us in some intermediate swim class I was in. We had to jump into the pool fully clothed, take our pants off, tie the legs, and scoop up some air through the open waistband while treading water. I remember it was nearly impossible to get enough air into the pants to inflate them. The air leaked out pretty quickly also. I think one would be better of conserving one's energy.

Only fantastic Kris would snorkle in a kiddie pool lol. That's not true, I would probably do it too. You have a couple of military things going on in there lol. You got the field shower and SORT of the water rescue. We were taught to take off our boots, take off our pants, tie the legs and fill them with water but it was just done a different way than what 5 minute crafts did it. Who knows though, they may have changed it. It's been a really long time since I went through basic training.
