To open a durian, look at the natural lines at the bottom of the fruit. If the fruit is ripe and not frozen... It will be pretty easy to open the durian. Pry open the durian based on the line and spread it open using your fingers as hard as you can. You don't need to use a knife all the way. Wear a glove and put a piece of cloth underneath the durian as you pry it open so that it doesn't slip and probably cause injury to you.

that is the wrong way to open durian, the easiest way is to puncture, crack, and crank the bottom off the durian. there's a star shaped spike on the bottom of the durian, that is the weakness point.

Frankly speaking, most durians in Asian markets in North America and East Asia came from Thailand (which were harvested 10 days before they ripen). Malaysian durians(rare to get them overseas) were allowed to drop from the trees naturally and therefore taste better. The downside is, it must be packed asap to be exported to China. And in the tropical heat, we must eat it 3 days after it drops from the tree. So they are pretty fresh when you go to a stall selling them. This is the main difference between a Malaysian fruit and those of Thailand's. Malaysians seldom consume Thai durians as we have the best durians in South East Asia. In fact Durians found in Singapore comes from Malaysia.

another tip. You can mix it with ice cream if you like. plain/vanilla is better. Many people selling ice cream durian in south asia as a street food. Some people also eat durian as the filling cream for their pancake.

I tried my first durian a week ago, and I got another last night to have for dinner-ate with mangosteen-“The Queen of Fruit-“ (good to eat with Durian, as it cools you down, while Durian heats you up.) I did have to get the mangosteen canned, though. Ugh. I’m in the US. Anyway, I totally love durian. As much as I love the ones I can get here, which are kept frozen to ship (the ones I can get are from Thailand), I’ll bet I’d absolutely go nuts if I ever got to try a fresh one! So many bad reaction videos-glad to see yours! A LOT of us westerners love durian, too! Edited to add: the tip about opening the durian (a comment on here) is good. I just use a steak knife, put it kind of at an angle on the end of the fruit without the stem (the durians I’ve tried have a pattern on the end; it doesn’t look like a star to me), then just twist it about a quarter turn, as if it’s a screwdriver, you know, then the seams split open pretty well, and I can open the sections with my hands. USA *really* needs to get more durians. I’m already sad the growing season is short!!

Star shaped marking on bottom. Use a sharper knife and slice just the bottom- twistin a little to crack it and then you pry open the pods.

how I open a durian is I lay the durian on the floor on it's side then I place a wooden block on top then press against it until the bottom of the durian splits open then I just pry it open using the split at the bottom

Hi Kyja...the frozen durians is nice but the durians that just fall from the tree is epic!!!...In Perak, Malaysia there is an Research Centre in Kuala Kangsar, Perak that have verieties of local fruits and you can eat durians...all you can eat for RM50...around USD13 for local...not sure for tourist but it is still cheap...Message if you and your family are coming over to Malaysia!!!

It seem maybe your cat want to taste the durian too.. Back in our grandfather days, when durian season came; tigers will pay visits to durian farm to eats durian. Our old folks always be carefully when collecting fallen durians. Yes, tigers do love durian here in Malaysia and Thailand.

Americans (and Canadians) always get it wrong when they attempt to open a durian. I have seen people use keys to puncture the sides. You do not cut the sides first. You turn it over to the back and cut the part without the thorns. Follow the lines created by God and nature because this is to avoid cutting the fruits inside. The lines are the divider of the pods. Anyway, nowadays you do have tutorials to open a durian fruit. Otherwise, you will either hurt yourself or get frustrated and tired opening an exotic fruit. Do not destroy the fruit before eating it. It's wrong to cut in that "line" since it is the wall that divides the part where the pods are... Make a shallow cut between those lines instead or the part where you can see bulky..

Hi there. You cut it in a wrong way. You should stab the knife at the bottom spot for few inches. Move the knife to the left & right, back & forth until it shows the cracking line. Then you can pull it open easily. Good luck for the next chance :)

The durian doesn't look ripe enough. Get a ripe one. The texture will be softer. chill it in the fridge for a few hours and it will taster better. Will smell better too.

Use the tip to penetrate. Also split from the rear end. If you ever eat durian again, go for the best Musang King. It is expensive but worth every cent. Thai durian has alot less smell and rather bland.

by the way..u cut it the wrong way baby. u should poke the top side of it. then by using bare hands, u separate the opening from left n right sides. that's how u handle durians.
