Trying E-Ink Note Tablet (ReMarkable RM100)

I picked up a used e-ink writing tablet that the seller claimed had some screen burn. Turns out that's just what e-ink looks like before it's refreshed, and there's no actual damage or burn at all!
This is NOT a sponsored review, as I paid for this thing (again, used, and cheap!). However, I do really like it so far! It's not 100% like writing on paper, but it's pretty close. It's much nicer for note taking than a regular tablet or older e-reader.

That is the closest thing to the Lisa digitizing pen and tablet we had at the tv studio in the 1980's , the Lisa's toaster composite output was sent to the video mixer board through the chroma keyer providing mostly live animated credits etc... Whew , that blew out some memory cob webs lol.

I bought a rM2 a few years ago and I honestly love the thing for reading papers. Highlighting and taking notes with it means I don't have to dupe-copy a page if I mess up highlighting a line on paper. It running linux and them giving you SSH out-of-the-box is a big bonus and I kind of feel like the "homebrew" side of things for this product is still in its infancy (compared to other homebrew scenes.) I really wish they had more drawing "primitive types", like it being used as a marker/pen is great but I want to be able to draw circles/squares/triangles without needing to pull out a physical stencil to do it. Having a "symbol library" would be really neat too, like this is the ideal CAD device imho. Maaaybe a little under powered for 3D, but 2D CAD would be killer.

we bought 20ish remarkables for our sales staff at work and although i have limited experience using them, it's amazing how intuitive it is to use. its a nice product.

I want to say your cat is so cute, was a pleasant surprise to see him jump up and try to help with the review. Also, the problem I have with these remarkable tablets and the iPad with apple pencil is that slight delay after a stroke to seeing it appear on the screen. Perhaps there are other devices that don't have this delay, but I haven't seen one and it really dissuades me from using them as paper replacements.

I have a ReMarkable 2 myself and I use it just about everyday. Writing notes is just so much easier when you can properly organize it. Feels so nice to write with too, feels just like paper. I love it alot

palmOS was so much better than even android in a lot of ways. It just worked, ran for a week on a AAA battery or two (its been 20 years I cant remember) and just had the best UX all around.

A trick I use for mini vs micro. Mini is small, micro is very small. Mini is the one that came first (think ~20 years ago when Kodak would use proprietary connectors instead) Micro b was just before c. A is normal, b is printers.

I have admired ReMarkable in their ads. I use Wacom pads with Photoshop and embroidery digitizing, so much easier than trying to make.fine motions with a mouse. Now I want one that is also a monitor so I can draw directly on my work. Those are still bit beyond my budget.

It looks like my last comment got caught in some kind of filter due to me posting a link -- These Remarkable tablets run Linux under the hood and have root-level SSH access enabled out of the box! There's a decently-sized community of people dedicated to poking around at the firmware on these things, and there's actually a few comprehensive guides online that show you how to take advantage of the root access provided and get things other than the default note-taking interface running! I've been rocking an RM1 for a few years, and also being a huge nerd I've had an absolute blast poking around with it!

There's no liquid crystal there. It's magnetized particles. It's a physically mobile ink which is pulled forward to visible or pushed back to hide it. I don't have a Remarkable, I've a Boyue Likebook Alita, and I love it for putting RPG books in front of players during session. That model's a bit slow by comparison to new ones, but it's a 10.5" with frontlight, so even in poor light, I can read it. And the andoid apps I've loaded and used are two dice rollers (FFG's Star Wars one and L5R one), and the DriveThruRPG library app, for downloading PDFs. (and, just in case, I've also put a Python interpreter for Android on it. That one's clunky, but it runs.) Oh, and I can't quickly find out for the remarkable, but most eInk note-taking tablets use Wacom technology for the digitizer...

I hate their subscription model and the lack of functionality in the device (ex: advanced file management, good ocr...) so I hglighly recommend to you the Supernote A5x /A5X2. Same thing but no subscription model, better software, regularly updated, has excellent community support and a excellent styluses.

My old man has an old-school Kindle. He's as averse to technology as the next Boomer, but he's on his 4th Kindle variant. He swears by it and to be frank I would welcome an "E-Ink" mode built in to a cell phone. It's so very easy for me to read. I'm a "Dark Mode" ranger all the way. Most sites I view in "reader" mode too.

These tablets are neat, I have a remarkable2. Tbh it's not worth the price, I know the limitations are intended to reduce distractions but if you like tinkering the novelty gets kinda old fast. Kind of wish I just got something with android or just a regular paper notebook, I'm probably gunna sell it.

My brain doesn't do organization all that well. I get avalanches of thoughts, sorta like dumping a bucket of glass marbles down a set of smooth cement stairs...... hardcore OH LOOK A SQUIRREL! Syndrome. Same issue when I was in college, had to hold myself at gunpoint to get any studying done. Not sure that nifty little pad woulda done it, either! Could think of a lot of uses for it, having worked law enforcement, casinos, and a number of other tangental routes thru my working life. I'd have to play with one a while to figure out if I had any current need.

Random thought ive had for years now: I'm shocked to this day that no one has tried to license Timex's old Indiglow technology for back-lit E-Ink tablets. Maybe it's my nostalgia for those old watches, but there's something about that soft green backlight glow that I would love to see in modern E-Ink tablets. I cant imagine it wastes battery more than the E-ink already uses.

Most eink readers have front-lights; the light is cast on the eInk screen from the sides. Works really well on my Boyue Likebook Alita. The Boyue manual is bad chinglish, and they missed a couple error dialogs...

a few drawbacks for drawing would be the pressure sensitivity and uh... lack of colors XD. and it's not clear if that drawing software supports layers and stuff. drawing software is important for digital art, something like Krita or the software that comes with other drawing tablets
