Especially I like Greek lamb-specialities (grilled on the spit or as chop with rice and French Fries). As dessert I recommend a "Galaktoboureko", a semolina-casserole (Grießauflauf), so yummy! 😋 The Balkans dishes (Greek, Croatian, Romanian, Turkish etc) taste all similar to me. For example Bifteki (grilled meat filled with feta cheese) you find in Greek and Croatian restaurants as well, Ćevapčići (grilled meat rolls) you find nearly everywhere in the Balkans-countries under different names.

To be fair turning meat on a stick over a fire is an ancient, universal idea...lol. Turks had the idea (I believe) because when I was really young everyone called it "Doner". We westernized it by replacing lamp with types of meat that are more popular in Europe and the U.S.

Greek here. All these are typical Greek dishes that we use to eat in my country too. But the truth is the Greeks of diaspora show the more fatty and unhealthy part of Greek cuisine. Yes it's delicious and flavorful but we have plenty of dishes which are vegetarian. Also we consume many vegetables (raw, fried, baked and boiked)and seafood (octopus, calamari, mussels, shrimps, all kinds of edible fishes and more). Maybe we eat more pasta than Italians(we have our traditional dishes with pasta). Our savory and sweet pastries are to die for. Countless pies, stews, soups, deeps, roasts, salads and not only the famous greek salad or farmers/villagers salad. Every town has its specific speciality and every yiayia(grandma)has its own recipe. Greek cuisine is exceptional and you are more than welcome to discover every part of it.

When I was a student at the University of Mainz (in the 80s), there was a Greek restaurant named 'Samos' that was across the Autobahn from the Uni Studentenwohnheim area. There was a pedestrian bridge that we would take there to a small mall directly on the other side. Freshly baked Greek bread, Taramasalata, and red Demestica wine was my standard order. I loved being able to arrive, be greeted warmly, sit down, and know I would get my favorite within 10 minutes of arrival. It was dead cheap and my friends and I would sit there for hours, ordering more side dishes and wine as we wanted. It was named 'Samos' because the family that owned and ran it were from Samos! And there were so many dogs that came with their owners! For whatever reason, dog owners loved that particular restaurant.

The secret is in the barbecue's fire coals, which has to be from wood. Not charcoal. In South Africa we braai (barbecue) all the time and we use braai wood. It gives the most delicious flavour and taste to anything you put on that barbecue...meat, fish, bread or veggies.

Thanks for this. I imagine since you've been to Greece, you are reliable judges of the food. I've made Souvlaki and Biftikia a few times because I have an annoyingly large mint plant and both dishes require mint. I love the contrasts of mint and feta and garlic and lemon. I wonder if Greek food is unique for this combo of flavors. Greek food is something I'd never eat in America, thanks to Germany having so many good Greek places. I guess they didn't give you an ouzo after, that's sad. Have you seen the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding? It's great: )

Fries in pita gyros are not a sign of quality! Fries are just plain cheaper than meat, so they're often included. By the way, this is not an "invention" from Greece, but originally comes from Greek snack bars in the German Ruhr area! Of course, steelworkers can't spend a lot of money on a quick lunch... So what you can find in Greece these days (mainly in touristy parts of the country) is actually just a re-import, similar to the Berlin style doner that can be found in more and more takeaways all across Turkey...

The subtitled interviews worked well although if you have a German only audience I wonder if you should subtitle the english for a mixed language video like this. Everything looks good, yummy and tasty BUT, the pita-gyros of my youth had meat, tzatziki, tomatoes, onions and parsley and NOT potatoes like modern day Greeks like to put in. Have no idea who thought of it but they started doing it back in the 1990s and I don't like it. Potatoes do not belong in the pita-gyros wrap but on a separate plate next to it. Other than that, everything else looked good!

I haven’t had a Gyros in 2 decades. My town,50 miles from San Francisco,is severely lacking in Food choices and the Gyros she prepared,if we had similar, would cost,at the least,$12+ dollars,& most likely have 30% less meat then she used. Mouth watering Video.

Our local greek restaurant is very nice too. Owned by a family, leaded by their mom. She is very strict ^^" But the food.... 🤤 I love bifteki and lamb and their chicken dishes are great too. And the Metaxa sauce! OMG! I love that stuff xD If, after a great meal, there is still space in my belly I love that amazing dessert, which name I always forget. It's a puff pastry filled with vanilla cream. Great, I'm hungry now. 😭

I wanted to say it's easy to understand if Phil got his meat types mixed up, the flavors are so powerful and yummy they could probably disguise cardboard well.

The restaurant and food looks great. Will give it a try when passing by. 🙂 If you like Sushi and a good view over Dusseldorf the restaurant in the Rheinturm (Rhine tower) might be something for you.

The north east Mediterranean countries of Greece, Turkey and Lebanon have great food that is influenced be each other but totally distinctive. It’s brave for a Greek restaurant/ to open in Germany given the entrenched Turkish influence but they have the advantage of being able to offer pork.
