Trying Japanese "Emergency Food Rations"

Texan in Tokyo

Күн бұрын

When we first moved to Tokyo, Japanese dad gave us three boxes of emergency food rations (as well as a couple other freeze-dried foods) - to put in our "earthquake survival bag."
Lucky for us, there hasn't been a horrific natural disaster in the last couple years. So the food has gone un-eaten. Until now.
Our emergency rations are expiring soon, so it's time to eat them and buy some more!
Special thanks to Shea for designing the intro! We're going to be putting in new intros from time-to-time (just for fun), since so many of y'all have sent suggestions/clips/files. Thanks~

One thing I like about (Japanese?) instructions. The fact is they seem to realize there are a lot of fans (consumers) of things who can't read the languages so they do clear picture instructions as well. Why don't other countries do picture instructions better?
@Galathorn
@Galathorn 8 жыл бұрын
Because usually and at least in Europe, most foodstuff have instructions/recipes at least in 3-4 languages (i.e. English, French, Spanish, German).

I didn't think about the different consumers not being able to read Japanese when I saw the pictures. I've always assumed it was incase a child had to do it on their own and couldn't read the kanji provided.

I was curious as to how this works, the metal plate is Magnesium, and mixes with salt water. The Magnesium reacts with the water giving off hydrogen and heat. You can buy these kits in the U.S. too but with more U.S. style food.
@n30p47h1c
@n30p47h1c 8 жыл бұрын
yup. I once actually took the magnesium powder out of some MREs and set it on fire. It was an amazing sight. Magnesium burns bright white and is used for white light in fireworks and to set off thermite.
@SuperFredAZ
@SuperFredAZ 8 жыл бұрын
there's a trick to getting it to react with water and give off so much heat, It's interesting how much safe heat it can give off. Lighting powdered magnesium is very dangerous, I had a very bad experience with magnesium as a kid.
@dzizzle9239
@dzizzle9239 8 жыл бұрын
I think this is the same heating element as they use in MRE's, for which you just have a thick plastic bag and you add water from your canteen (not that I ever used them, because I was in too much of a hurry to just eat the food, so I learned what tasted good cold)
@n30p47h1c
@n30p47h1c 8 жыл бұрын
They do pretty much use the same chemical reaction. The powder in MRE's use magnesium. Though MRE's also use iron with salt to catalyze the reaction

Ryosuke does look good with those glasses, no shame in those my friend! Those glasses suit you very well! I love emergency packs, I tried the Dutch military ones and even if they are different, they still are actually pretty good. I do hope I can manage to get a few new ones soon, kinda love having a few now an then. Tip for the next time: Put the bag in the box before you let the chemical reaction do it's trick, it saves a lot of trouble. haha Also, Grace made the mistake of having the chemical reaction on the top side instead of the bottom side. The aluminium foil cup is there for a reason, not just to protect your food but also to add to the chemical reaction.

***** So what does it mean in particular? Are those too expensive or not easy enough to use in field? As far as I know, they´re being tested continuously and have been tested in Afghanistan in the 1980.s and now Japan sent a small group of special elite force to Iraq to fight against the ISIS. I think they´re awesome, because the food is really hot and delicious and that´s what you need as a soldier.

***** Thanks for your detailed informations. I think Japan will be in active duty soon, and it´s sons and daughters may die as well for the well of the rich and greedy weapon and oil companies. I myself had couple of the US-MREs, from Germany and Italy and also from Japan. In my opinion the Japanese taste way better than the others, but as you said, it´s like cooking a real meal and not that easy. :)

When doing Molecular Gastronomy. You must ALWAYS read the directions completely.And for yours to fully cook. They should in future have the big bag already inside the box before you add the chemical reactors.Then put the rice and meal pouch in. You must double fold the big bag (for the seal to work) and then tape it shut.

Those are just Japanese versions of American Military MREs. Practically the same thing, but the food probably taste a little better. Now as for the food being edible, Yes, the food is already cooked. All you're doing is re-heating the food. The food itself is cooked and sealed before it's packaged. The astronauts in the ISS also eat the same thing, although with less liquids for obvious reasons.

I live in Florida, so I keep canned soup, canned ravioli/pasta/spagettios, and things like dried fruit, granola bars, packages of tuna, and poptarts to eat during a hurricane (or I guess other emergencies but hurricane preparedness is the primary reason) but this seems so much nicer to eat than cold canned food. I kind of have to agree with Ryosuke though. If I'm without power, that means there's no air conditioning and I'm probably sweating. Who can eat curry rice (or any hot food for that matter) in that? Also, laughing hysterically at Ryosuke in the outtro. You are a certainly a treasure.

Those look great. I really think I could smell the curry. Since my last great adventure I try to keep canned goods on hand to get me through a few days. Even more important than food is potable water. And some sacrificial frozen food for keeping things cold that must be kept cold. I don't keep a bug out bag though. I'm not sure there'd be a place to go and the roads would probably be clogged. But Japan seems to have worse troubles than the ones where I live. Do you guys know how to make a fire? Make a shelter from whatever is lying around? Make a small boat? A little bit of first aid? I'd just bet that Japanese Dad knows all of that stuff.
@tarstakars
@tarstakars 9 жыл бұрын
all emergency rations like the type you had tonight can be eaten cold they are already pre cooked heating them up just makes them more palatable but eating them cold is OK, if the rations are stored properly kept away from the extremes of heat or cold they can last well beyond their shelf life as a former military man I can tell you that I ate rations in the 90's that were packaged in the sixties.

Unlike in most MREs the rice is not really completely precooked - can't be eaten out of the package. Well - I once tried eating raw, uncooked white rice - it can be done but not a great culinary experience. I was a kid and read too many military survival manuals ;-). The rice shown in the video is like the microwave rice packs you can buy in some stores - common in Hawaii. Toss in a microwave for a few minutes and it cooks up nice and soft. Off topic: I miss eating at the Japanese convenience stores - such a large selection of food and drink. Some of the Hawaii stores are trying to do the same thing. YMMV

These would probably be good for camping trips. They seem tastier than a lot of the things you can cook on a camp fire.

I'm betting the food is probably precooked at you're just heating it up, like hot dogs. So it's probably totally safe to eat even without cooking at all.
