Japanese Kyushoku is the best in school meals but it is critical now as many parents do not pay fees. Likewise any other infrastructure or system in Japan , to maintain good system , it is vital for all parents to fullfill their duties .

Hmm, interesting perspective- I appreciate your insights.
The contents of school lunches at elementary schools are limited by the amount of school lunch fees that parents pay to schools. A set meal like the one offered at CAFE is difficult unless there is a subsidy. In the first place, even if a lot of children are served, they tend to leave food behind.Besides, the time to eat is short, and after that you have to clean up.The school also hopes that students won't feel sleepy during afternoon classes.
Hi Chako, What a fascinating place that you guys took us to. The setting with the metal plate, dish and bowls along with the spork, brings back a lot of pleasant memories during the “kyushoku” lunch hours in my days of being an elementary student in Tokyo. I envy, as a parent in US, the “kyushoku” system that is designed as a part of the overall education to promote the importance of balanced meals, appreciation for how the food is produced, etc. It is my personal belief that it is one of the reasons why Japanese enjoy longevity as a whole. I also have to mention how I used to look forward to the lunch with “age-pan” on the menu. My recollection is that every kid loved it. Yum! Thanks, Shin from Colorado

Yes I agree that the Japanese concept of school lunch provides a much better understanding and foundation for healthy eating habits which will affect a person’s entire lifetime. I do think in certain parts of the US (California for example), they are starting to implement better choices and education around it, but we need to see the rest of the country follow suit…
After WW2 japanese economy was so bad. So US provide us butter milk for our Kyushoku, school lunch . Instead of beef or pork, whale had been used for Kyushoku. Current style Kyushoku may be begun after 1970s or some where.
I felt School lunch is nostalgic. And I used to look forward to the day there are "AGEPAN". School lunch menue is diffrent between prefecture. I lived Kanagawa prefecture when I was a child. There were served bread our four out of five days, and only served rice once a week. So I prefer rice than bread. But "AGEPAN" day was different. That's why I was pleased you like "AGEPAN".

I have often heard that lunches are different depending on prefecture, but I think that no matter where in Japan, the school lunch is 1000 times better than American school lunch! Agepan is the best! Now I can see why all the kids love it so much.

He wanted to try it because it looked so delicious!
The food on the trays do look like the ones in school, appetizers and main dishes, so as the atmosphere of the cafe. Oh my, even the welcome sign is a blackboard.

I really enjoyed listening to Chako-chan's bilingual conversation with her kids. I am sure Chako-chan misses the Krispy Kreme doughnuts which are similar to those Age-pans. The overcooked spaghetti noodles bring back memories for my first travel to the US (especially to the South) in the late 80's.

Honestly… never cared much for Krispy Kreme- way too sweet for my tastes! Guess that’s why I had to come to Japan where the sweets are less “sweet”!
