I don't know why but personally I find that simple Malaysian donut tastes better than the ones in Western countries. Doesn't make any sense at all because it's basically just flour, sugar, salt, yeast and water mixed and rolled into a doughnut and deep fried in oil. You would imagine it would taste the same no matter where you get it in this world but the ones in Malaysia is a bit different in a good way. Is it the texture? The sugar crystals? I don't know but I really love them especially when dipped in piping hot teh tarik. Very nice video by the way. Sugar overload overkill haha!

That last item - ''pancake'' with peanuts is Hokkien (Fujian province) in origin. Decades ago in PJ and KL, we mostly called it by the Cantonese name ''Dai Kau Min''. There were two types - a thin crispy one and the one you tried, with a dense texture - and best eaten hot off the grilling plate. There were no other fancy flavours, just simple sweetened crushed peanuts (if there was any corn, I couldn't taste it). I used to eat it daily as a kid 35-40 years ago. Haven't had one in years.
@AlwaysaFriday7 жыл бұрын
Ah cool, thanks for the info Ken!
@udasan7 жыл бұрын
You are correct, Ken! The Apam Balik with sweet corn is basically the Malaysian version as that's what we (at least my family and friends) know from forever. For us, the original Apam Balik in Malaysia consists of pancake with crushed peanuts, sweet corn, sugar and butter filling. :D

Glad you enjoyed the kuihs!! Lots of sweet Malay kuihs can taste almost the same as many are made with or contain coconut, or glutinous rice/flour to give them a sticky texture, palm sugar, and pandan, so they just come in different shapes and thus get different names. Check out also the savoury kuihs like karipap (curry puffs), roti sambal (it could have a different name, but basically it's small fried bun with sambal filling and a slice of cucumber), or fried popiah with its chilly sauce... ok mind gone blank..but well, do check them out at the nearest night market, you'll definitely find them alongside those sweet ones. Cheers!

Hi guys, All 5 kuih you've tried i.e. Ketayap, Koci, Buah Melaka, Putu Piring, & Kasui contain 1 main important ingredient that is palm sugar. Notice the brown color in each kuih? The brown color came from the palm sugar :) I would say you've selected all my favorite kuih in this video! Seri muka green colour is from pandan leave. The green part has eggs, coconut milk, white sugar, some salt n flour in it. When I was young, I would only had the green part and gave the glutinous rice under it to my mom. Both Kasui and seri muka, had almost similar ingredients just that Kasui is using palm sugar, whilst seri muka is made with white sugar. I am a sucker for original apam balik. Can't resist the mixture of crush peanut, sugar, corn, and butter! I like to enjoy my doughnut with black coffee. Da bomb! I think you should add "curry puff sardin" , "che mek molek", "kuih bom", "kuih cara berlauk", "kuih talam keladi", "popia goreng sambal", "popia basah", "badak berendam", "puteri mandi", in your must try Malaysia's kuih list! Hope you'll enjoy all kuih I've suggested. :)

Apom balik ( Peanut butter pancakes) I actually prefer the smaller version and you have to eat it straight away. Don't buy the cold one, it will turn soft. The hot one is very crispy. There's other flavors too.. At my place, there's about 20 different flavors. One of those is peanut butter and chocolate.. Which is the most famous. But I prefer the original one, peanut, extra butter, extra sugar and extra sweet corn. Yummy! 😋

If your PUTU PIRING was slightly crunchy, then you've had the right one. That's a snack that must be devoured as soons as iits cooked...letting it sit around can turn it a little soggy if the filling were runny.
Try apom Balik with additional jagung (corn cream style) or with chocolate sauce.

Marrying a girl, the first time you meet her parents, the mother might serve you onde-onde as a test. If you accidentally explode the palm sugar outside your mouth, you're destroyed 😅

interesting, but it kinda gets my imagination running wild. Would be interesting if the bride-to-be was tested that way - just to see how she handles an explosion of that much fluid in her mouth...hahahahaha.

Try and get yourselves cara berlauk, kuih bom, tepung gomak, & batang buruk. The former's savoury sweet (From onions) and slightly hot (From chillies). The other three are sweet.

A bit late on watching the videos that you guys made. and might I say, wonderful improvement from the video made last year I can foresee the next Anthony and Antoinette Bourdain in the two of you =D Keep it up ! Staying long term in Malaysia?

Also, there are other sweets here in Malaysia that you two could try. Those that you guys are trying are mainly from the Malay culture. Other cultural backgrounds (Chinese, Indian) have their very own sweets too. Nightmarkets and morning markets do have them

Thank you so much Lim! That means a lot to us! We'll keep on trying to improve! And we're actually leaving soon, although loads of Malaysian video still to come. Afterwards we've got a Tokyo series coming out, is that content you'd be interested in? Thanks for watching!
@limbrandon59037 жыл бұрын
Would have loved to discover your videos earlier. Enjoyed the content very much. Honesty in reviewing was great. What I really appreciate is how I felt that you two were talking personally to me during the reviews. Don't lose that quality alright? Enjoy the land of the rising sun! Do give me a PM whenever you guys are back in Malaysia. (being a foodie, would recommend loads to you two)
