I like Xrd a lot, it might be my favorite Guilty Gear, but that game has PROBLEMS. I'm talking poorly executed mechanics and wacky balance. But people seem to forget them when they talk about how perfect that game was when they try to dismiss Strive. I can make this argument for MK fandom discourse or Tekken discourse. It's everywhere. Sure, you can try to make a genuine argument in good faith, but try not to act like you've played the game you're talking about. I see people honeymoon titles they've never touched all the time.

@ That’s not what I mean at all. Maybe you just wanted an opportunity to vent about a moot point from FGC twitter, but this has absolutely nothing to do with what I’m trying to say here. To be more clear, I mean that even though Steve is kind of the meme guy in this circle, he does have a real point when saying that “SF3 is fun to watch but not to play”. Every time that SF3 is brought up in this conversation, they have to point out the competitive scene, EVO moment 37 and whatever. It even happened in this exact situation. But people don’t talk as much about how fun it actually is or how memorable the characters are. A lot of people, not saying all or even most of them, but a lot of them only say that SF3 is the greatest fighting game ever because of status. Because that makes you look like you’re in the know. And then turns out these same people can’t even pull off a parry. SF3 is the game of moments, but a lot of the “fans” don’t actually play it.

One game sold 10 million copies, as one of the most sold games of all time. One game had the most EVO entries, and peaked at 40k players and was the biggest comp fighting game on Earth before strive. MvCi is a dog water roster, music, levels, and even the gameplay right now is not as good as DBFZ. One game is IGN's top 5 fighting games of all time, on multiple lists of top 10. DBFZ is stunning. Arguably the best graphics of all time, and arguably the best competitive scene of all time. And its still kicking at EVO even as a 7 year old game.

My personal opinion: the best fighting game is the one that means the most to you. I don't really feel the need to create an elimination process. If there's one more argument I can give in MK9's favour compared to MKX (and I like X a lot) is that beyond the Story Mode, there's just a lot more content. You had Test Your Might, Test Your Sight, a fully functional Tag Team mode and a 300 mission tower where all of them are unique. In my opinion, that's the best that MK got to selling an audience on mere content since Deception's Konquest mode.

With impact>everything. Doesn't that just mean newer games will never be considered better than older fgs. Mk2, Sf2, T3 can't just automatically be considered "better" than most newer games coz of impact. Fighting games were much bigger in the gaming industry back then so no newer fg is gonna reach that level of impact with how the gaming industry has developed. It was also much easier to innovate back then coz these games had very few installations. Maybe there should just be top 10 older fgs and top 10 modern fgs.

You can argue which game's content is of higher quality, but it's factually incorrect to say T3 has more than T5. Aside from the modes they both share, T5/DR has Devil Within, Arcade History, Customization, TK Dojo, Gold Rush, Bowling, Command Attack, and even a Goddamn tutorial.

T4 was the height of the more grounded stories, T5 expanded the "devil gene" side to take centre stage and got a bit crazy but was OK. T6 was diabolically bad and the biggest mistake in the franchise, no contest - God awful story and direction for the game. Tekken 7 was actually a slow return to form (awful narrator though), and T8 was quite decent (despite being a bit crazy and too anime at times). I'm afraid the T4 days are far behind us now.

I don't know how they got there because I jumped to the end. But Soul Calbur 2 is better in every way, and it also did a lot for the community. It was like the beginning of sharing clips of tournaments with friends, we passed around clips of Aris with wacky pre-discord voldo tech and 12 year old Kayane crushing everyone in Europe. It captured more then any 3D fighter did.

as far as "How old does a game need to be to not be too new" I think my line of thinking is "the game is clearly no longer getting content made for it" plus like, a year after the end of that. That or it just needs to be a very obvious "my thoughts are not going to radically change on it" situation like something like Multiversus.

Great list and I know it's tough, but you absolutely need SF4 in there. It's way to important to the history of fighting games to leave out. Just my two cents, I'd replace KI with SF4 - it saved the fighting game genre.

Soul Calibur deserves more love. I personally load up SC3 more, but nobody can ignore the impact and achievement of Soul Calibur. If it was on a system that didn't get smashed out by the competition, if it was in more arcades, if it had better name recognition... we'd be on SC 7 or 8 by now. And also, nobody gives love to Soul Edge - a marvel in its own right. That game was butter on the PSX, and deserves to be talked about along side Tekken 3. Soul Edge might be the game that blew me away the most when I was younger, along with stuff like T3 and CVS2, two of my favorite fighting games of all time.

Ye considering how soulcalibur 1 is up there and 2 is nowhere to be seen, even when its an overall massive improvement gameplay wise. Is very misleading to newcomers... Tho I'd of course still recommend new players to play Socal1.

I think this is a valid idea, but Max and friends arent the guys to judge casual appeal with this genre specifically. They focus on hardcore systems too much.

In terms of influence in the game industry alone, SF2 and VF would be the top two. If I had to choose the top three, SNK would be on the list, taking into account its history with Capcom. The reason is that the competition with SNK helped Capcom grow, and people who worked on SNK fighting games were deeply involved in games that built the foundations of 3D action games, such as Devil May Cry and God Hand. Final Fight, which influenced SF2 in terms of game design, was also heavily influenced by Kunio-kun and Double Dragon, but the reason Capcom wanted to make a beat'em up (called Final Fight type at the time) was because a Capcom employee discovered that SNK's Prisoners of War was a hit in the United States.
