I wasn't sure about this game at first, but by the end of the first case, I was pretty impressed. Not quite as bombastic as Ace Attorney, but I liked how early they were willing to deploy late-game AA twists. Wonder if the other cases can sustain that momentum.

I have had lawyers advise me to my face that I should lie to a judge because they thought it would make the case run smoother. Lawyers aren't there to see justice done, they're there to get their client the best outcome... justice doesn't matter.

Not a lawyer, but my basic understanding is that while illegally obtaining exculpatory evidence would get you arrested and disbarred, I don't think fruit of the poisoned tree applies to the defense. It's based around protecting people from unjust prosecutions, saving people from them is given more legal leeway.

This is always an issue in these games cause they want to have an adventure game-esque investigation part that is not just about talking to people and investigating the evidence the police has found. Obviously a lawyer wouldn't walk around the crime scene gathering evidence and not revealing it to the prosecution or vice versa. Ace Attorney games tried to play around it by pretending that you only bring up things that you saw and provoke people into saying something, but often it's clear the hero literally presents some object they claim to have found at the crime scene. I think Aviary Attorney does it better than similar games because: 1) They acknowledge how they can't just bring up illegal evidence. 2) It's 19th century and a revolutionary era when people are probably more liberal with the application of law. 3) They're birds and animals, it's easier to stomach than in games that pretend to have any realism in them.

It's depressing these days that the dissemination of software building tools has made it possible for many more people to create fantastic indie gems like this. Depressing because nowadays it's like once a week some actual piece of art- or at least, something damn funny and smart like this- passes by and I can't play them all! First World Problems yo.
