Trying out the GoSun Solar Cooker Inside My House

I designed my house with the sun in mind, and since I get so much sun inside the house in the middle of winter, why should put a solar cooker outside to cook? The GoSun, a relatively new design for solar cooking, is small, portable, and powerful enough to use in my house with just the sunlight coming in through the window. My DR neighbor Aaron and I tried it out last January to see how it would work even in the low intensity winter sunlight. The GoSun is just another tool we can use to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel and make use of the abundant solar energy that bathes our planet year round.

I’ve never seen a solar cooker working indoors. What a great improvement for some clod days or if there are animals outdoors, etc !

I love making bread in my GoSun Sport. Even works well in the wintertime in 20F temps, heats to 350+F in no time. It's great to make fresh bread out on the ice when Ice Fishing.

That's a great place to use it if it's sunny. You can have really warm food when you are chilly.

Near infrared (NIR) and Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) will pass through most glass, though the amount will vary based on the glass and the specific wavelengths within those bands. Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) and Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) are blocked by most glass.

That would have been a great idea except for one thing: you are not cooking the beans you are just heating them up. But thanks for sparking my curiosity. I do have two windows that might be contenders.

Thanks for the video! I was wondering if it would cook inside if you had a window that received enough sunlight. Now all I need is a window that gets enough sun! :-(

I thought I'd let you know about an update I posted to my videos on the larger 4" solar oven. I still like the idea, but I've had some bad luck, or maybe other people have too, anyway, I still really like the smaller tubes for heating water.Update 2/7/2017: My tube imploded last week. If you've read through any of my updates above, you know that I had another oven that lost vacuum a couple years ago. So anyway, I'm pretty torn about buying another one, even though they are relatively cheap (about $70 on amazon (shipping included)). I'll probably hold off for a while. I'm not sure why it imploded (it was quite loud, although I had earphones on at the time). I was just putting in one of my new stainless steel containers and bam- There was some water in the bottom, so the temperature at most was 212F (although it was pretty early in the morning and I don't think it was that hot). I've also done that maneuver multiple times.I still think a weak part of the design is the little metal spring that holds the two pieces of glass apart. This is where the crack developed on my last tube, and although I didn't see any evidence that any scratching occurred at that point on this tube, the metal is sharper at that point than need be (in my opinion). If a more smooth type of spring (with cushioning) could be used inside these tubes, maybe that would help. I also realize that the way I use the tube (putting a bunch of weight into the tube, and sometimes turning the tube upside down to empty water might also be a problem. The smaller tubes have been more consistent. It seems that when you get the larger diameters, and the necessary thicker glass, it's more difficult to make sure implosion doesn't happen, but who knows? Maybe one of my stray cats scratched the surface a short while before it imploded. I hope everyone else that has been using these has longer term success. I can still get pretty warm water (150F at least) on sunny days in winter with the old tube that just has a crack in the outer tube (and lost vacuum), so it is good for water heating at least. Maybe I'll try cooking something simple in it on extremely sunny days

You have to be careful with the glass being hot and adding cold anything - water, metal... it will explode on you... Do not put the unit in the sun and less you're ready to cook!

The tube is quartz, which passes all wavelengths.

how easy is it to clean up afterwards?

+trolle222 As long as you don't get food all over the inside of the tube, it's about as easy to clean as any other cooking vessel. Probably also depends on what you are cooking. It does come with a brush to clean the inside of the tube if you need to.

If that's a solar passive house, is that solar glass in the window? Solar glass will pass UV light... The solar cooker would work faster if you were outdoors not behind a plate of glass....

It seemed to work fine in the video. The window the cooker was in is clear glass.

According to these people its meant only for reheating stuff thats already cooked. Heating refried beans and that is suppose to be a review? Because of these guys I'm now having second thoughts of getting one.

Who are "these people"? You could cook anything that can fit in the tray. As others say in the comments. This can get up to 350. Not sure what you want to do, smelt iron?
