Today I am trying a new series of video (depending on how well this does.. lol) where I buy art gimmicks, overpriced art crap to see if it is in fact, actually not bad at all! This is the $50 smART Projector I found in the toy aisle at Target, where you project and trace your art, it was in the toy aisle which makes it even more pricey, but is it actually good??

I've always heard don't trace don't trace tracing is litteraly how I learned how to draw I knew right from wrong and anything I traced I didn't claim as mine I didn't even have social media except for facebook at that time but it's great practice especially if you redraw it without tracing for your hand to get used to drawing
@ashupershpie

Don’t feel guilty. Tracing is a valid way to learn. I mean, that’s how most of us learned to write letters! (Trace, trace a partial then write on your own worksheets). Only thing to keep in mind: if you plan to sell the final artwork, make sure you have copyright permission, or use images from a site like Pixabay.

I had like a pre pre pre version of this as a kid xD you had a little table with a see through plastic plate as a surface. And something like a flat lightbulb to fit under it. On that light you could put little plastic plates with outlines of the thing you can draw on it. It was so much fun drawing all these animals. I remember it also had a lot of facial features like different sets of eyes, noses and mouths so you can create human faces xD

I can’t draw, but I have been using a projector app on my iPad to trace pictures. I have been trying to just do more outlines and finish the drawing without looking through the pad. I don’t think I will ever get to the point where I can draw just from looking at something, but it is still satisfying to spend some time and turn a blank page into an image people can recognize. Going to try sketching outlines and then paint with watercolors the details. First efforts not so good, but I’ll keep trying. At 50, hopefully this old dog can learn some new tricks.

Seeing the problems you are having being left handed, I would imagine it would be nearly impossible doing it right handed! For anyone who could benefit from this, tracing is perfectly fine to do. A lot of professional artists will trace their images especially if it's a paid commission so they can give the best results possible to the person buying the painting. There's no shame in tracing. I trace quite a bit because I do watercolor and I can't afford to damage the paper by erasing and redrawing certain areas. Even when I freehand something, I will still trace it by sketching it onto a scrap piece of paper and then trace it onto my watercolor paper.

My mom had an overhead projector because she used to make wooden yard decorations and painting on large canvases (totally wish I got her artistic genes) but we had one like the ones at school and I used to love to draw on that thing and play like I was a teacher! ...is that a pizza Stitch? Spaghetti? Just a pattern? I sat here watching the whole video trying to figure it out. 😂 But $50 for a tracing toy is crazy expensive...I usually use a light box. They are pretty cheap now...but mine is like 10+ yrs old. But it still works! Or if it's a big piece, I use a glass table with a light. Though I can understand how some kids would enjoy this. It's cute with the animation and connects with your phone...techy. 😆

I can see this also being useful if you're not very good at painting but you already have like drawing and sketching and stuff down or you need to make multiple of the same piece for like...selling or something...? cuz you can project the drawing you already did onto the canvas and it makes the process of taking it from a sketch to a painting easier

There’s lots of people out there making a living by tracing. Projectors are pretty common among colored pencil artists. It’s a time consuming medium and they take any shortcut they can. Some even draw on heated boards so the pencils go down smooth and buttery. Because at the end of the day, a non-artist who commissions a portrait only cares that it looks like the subject. Is it cheating? Kinda. Is it lazy? Of course. Do they churn out lots of impressive looking drawings and charge top dollar? You know they do.

Tracing isn't cheating or lazy it helps when learning to draw and there is nothing wrong with selling it as long as tracing isn't the only thing you did

they could easily get rid of the shadowing issue if it was a lightbox format instead of projecting down on the table

I mean, I'm still tracing my own art xD Get's rid of the pencile marks and if I screw up colloring I don't have to redraw it completely since I still have the sketch :3 But I think my light plate is more usefull than that thing you got there xD

I mostly do digital art now, but when I do traditional art I also trace it on a new sheet of paper using a light plate. The projector could be useful for transferring your sketch to wood or canvas though, since a light plate wouldn't cut it for that.

@@miaikonteras4006 true! Probably more usefull than the Overheadprojektor I'm using currently for stuff like that xD
