Today we find out our IBC supplier got wipe clean by a supplier so we have to come up with a way to maximize the baskets we have left. Devising a new way to load the baskets with the Eastonmade axis

It was inevitable! The demand for IBC totes for firewood baskets was eventually going to out pace the supply. No doubt the prices will go up as well. All good things come to an end. You sharing your source was a reflection of your character. So good on you. No one likes a selfish bastard. I figure when things get rolling for me, I'll have to make or find another means for firewood storage. Right now I have a row of racks for the firewood I need for my house. In total I have 7 racks that hold 1.5 cords. I learned early wood high and dry is the best and I hate wasting time having to make neat stacks of wood so they don't tip over.

I'll have to say Adam you've got a good spirit, not only sharing your knowledge but your contacts. I bought 4 IBC totes last spring off a guy in Buckhannon W.V.. the first two cost me 50 bucks a piece, went back a week later to buy 2 more and he charged me 75 bucks a piece. Their scarce around here, and when you do find them fairly expensive. I think stacking your split firewood is the best way.

Hey Adam if you’re short on totes go ahead and stack it and save the room just adds one step to the process. Heck I’m one to talk I think I’ve got some wood I will have stacked/moved 5 times before it gets in the heater. Take care brother

I wonder sometimes when I read comments, "did they even watch the video?" Can't say I'm surprised in the least that someone hoarded all the totes. Sad part is they're probably not even going to use them, probably going to resell. If you have access to more pallets what about making more "mini piles" and just leaving them to season? I know it might take a little longer to season, but you'll save a ton of time stacking and as you know the key to firewood is the least amount of touches.

That Axis really gives you superior control over your splits...love watching it in action! I've been debating whether or not its time/cost effective to loose throw or stack the wood in the totes myself. I agree with your figure of about a 20% differential between the two. Personally I think it will dry better and looks more presentable to stack, plus you fit more in, so for me thats 3 positives for stacking versus the one positive of saving time/effort loose throwing or in your case conveyor into the totes.

I just started splitting (Southern California) and I noticed when I post it for sale I get more people interested when they see picture of the wood stacked opposed to just a pile. Ps, 4 second cycle time is crazy fast! Awesome splitter.

Hey Adam, sad to hear about "your" IBC's. However, Im sure you'll get some more in time. If you ask around people working in truck shops etc they often have them laying around and if youre lucky you can get a few cheap. Anyway, the upgrade to the Eastonmade Axis seems to be a bit of a game changer. If I understand this right, you're starting to chase seconds. Time less spent means extra money made. I dont mean to correct you in any way, but in your last few videos Ive noticed you spend a lot of time measuring the length of your logs by swinging that chainsaw around. A second here and a second there, you know. Take my advice and invest in a length gauge for your saw. Its a minor investment, just a few dollars, but it will save you a lot of time even though measuring one log doesnt take that log. In total, when you look at it in a years perspective however.. At least it has helped me alot and my arms doesnt get as tired anymore either. That sucks on the totes. Liking the new EastonMade splitter, Buckin’ Billy Ray has the same one. I would keep stacking them, then again I have OCD when it comes to things looking neat and organized, curb appeal if you will. Lol. Also, if was a fire wood buyer, it just looks better as far as, this guy took the time to split and stack it nice. Clean stack means more wood, happier customer or easier for you as well when you go to use it. Definitely a nice looking set up when it comes to how you layout your work area. If he's just selling bundles the customer never sees his operation. 90% of customers only look at price or the availability of delivery only anyways, that's why it's tough to compete with the junk wood guys, alot of people just don't know better.

I like that set up. No fuss no muss. Only thing that will make it better is if cycle time could be speed up.. If your not selling bulk wood and you got enough baskets I'd say let it dump in baskets and as you bundle you can stack neat.

I see you use the log grapple to hold the logs up off the ground while you cut bucks off each end. Would it work and make sense for you to make or get a set if saw bucks to set the shortened logs onto to finish the last bucks off the ground? Since you already have the loader and grapple to lift them onto the saw bucks.

Adam - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Why don't you put a wall of pallets around your pallet base to contain your split logs and keep them off the ground. I use this system, tied together with a supply of 2 yard long ropes kept upright by longer ropes tied at 45 degrees to the floor. The system costs nothing, is easily moved or stored and readily adaptable for local circumstances. Its also easy to organise a temporary roof using damp proof 1200 gauge plastic but it is important to arrange an air gap between the logs and the plastic.

If, like here in New Zealand, pallets are free to take away, Use cable ties to turn 5 pallets into a wood holder. Will still move the same and hold about the same. If time is the issue this may solve it mate.

I would also make a platform 2 feet high under the pallets to raise them off the ground so less bending over. You can keep the same amount of pallets and load baskets from three sides to reach the wood.

Adam: [12.27.20] The IBC Totes we tell our clients where they can buy them. We do take a side grinder & modify for free, an enlighten them to stack it not to toss it in. But to stack. The same goes for the Hardware stores & Corner Convenience Store Gas Stations. The biggest trick is being able to take an acorn & sprout an 30' red oak tree. Sorry for being a bet of a bucket mouth, I do enjoy your take & opinions on firewood.

I like to have the wood stacked it looks better and saves room like you said. I am planning to custom make pallets for my firewood. The totes are nice but not for me. With the pallets I plan on building I can get wood from witch ever side I want. I'm really liking the new splitter.

Adam sounds like that saw is waking up, starting to break in. I would stack in the totes, but in the perfect world I would build a 3 sided building say 24 by 24 with rough cut 1 by sides placed with air gaps, split and conveyor into it then use a firewood bucket On tractor and scoop and stack into totes as you need.

So 30 min. extra work for 20% more wood stored? What else could you do with the the 30 min per basket? Seems like extra handling to me. Filled off the conveyer be looser stacked and dry slightly quicker? What is a reasonable hourly rate to aim for and how much value hand stacking the wood in the baskets adds would depend on your personal situation.

Ever think about building a large three sided “box” to convey the wood into? Instead of dropping on pallets. Would keep it off the ground and in a neat pile, similar to conveying into your totes. Just a thought. Love the videos.

I like this idea and have wondered how an old gravity wagon for grain would work...only problem is they are probably hard to come by in Western PA. Here in Iowa, the old small ones are obsolete and you can find them for $200-$300.

G'day HTA, if it's a 1/3 of a cord stacked for X amount of $ and it takes Y amount of time to stack it what's the difference in volume not stacked in $ compared to the time it takes you to stack it in labour ? I think that's the question, as an accountant and a wood cutter you can surely answer this.

If you had 8 or 10 extra IBC totes to surround the pallets with, you could get quite a stack there, with spillover going into the totes

I would stack them. But would think about eliminating a handling step since you're selling strictly bundle wood. I wouldn't stack them in the tote until they're bundled to sell. Just a thought. Remember, I'm learning from you!

I take it you sell you firewood by the IBC tote worth (or face cord). I hope you charge a deposit on the IBC tote to cover the cost of replacing them down the road. That axis splitter certainly does a good job at splitting firewood small and uniformly.

If you are short of totes, then by all means stack them up to their fullest potential. You still need to have them on pallets because they will stick to the ground once frost set in.

Have you tried grabbing the logs by 1 end rather than in the middle? That way you might get 5 or 6 blocks bucked before you need to drop the last bit on the ground.

Best of both worlds...I think I’d try to lift a basket with the tractor so the floor of the basket was waist high right under the conveyor. After every 2 or 3 rounds I’d walk over to the basket and straighten them up. Then lower the basket to keep the row you’re working on at waist level. Easier on your back and somewhat less handling. Your step count would be way up though 😄

There is a measurer for your saw @t that helps out and I see you're ? a tall man. I'm 6'2" and I find a 24-25" is a great length for bucking logs on the ground. Standing tall the tip is just off the ground. Its the stand up and buck Buckin Billy Ray story ... he uses a 28" + if you're working on big cedars that works, but on the timber I see you've got a 24" would help your back.

That would t be the most efficient use of fuel. Better to get all your splitting done as quick as possible and then stack when the engine isn’t running. Right?

FWIW you have a nice bundle in your hands ready to go in the tote if you place the tote directly beside you. If you turn off the conveyor you would save a minute amount of fuel. I think it would be a good comparison to see if it’s faster to stack in the tote after the splitting is done vs. directly into the tote from the table being mindful to keep the split log bundle in your hands together straight into the tote. Remember fuel is cheap compared to your time.

Seems to me you have invested a lot of money in a inefficient machine giving you have 3 people and some power source! Get a Palax processor or similar. You should also try setting your tines on your loader so you can pick your logs upon there ends and lop all the way along instead of chasing on the ground👍😀

The key to getting them is to find a place that gets a product in them for whatever they do. Those totes usually have an 800 number on them that you call and they come pick them up for free and companies do that just to get rid of them. If they find they can make a few bucks on them they may sell them to you.
