@@RLRSwanson Nah it was actually quite a bit different - kerbs had been installed more than 1 metre away from the walls which made it narrower and hence slower at the same time, all the while making a mistake less costly by not having to die, just 'gently' hop across those kerbs. Also, it had actually been moved a lot further down the road in 1968 to another opening and so was at a completely different place to both this the original fast chicane and the current one. (Which was moved back up when they replaced the one used in the 1970s and 1980s.) No wonder there were no major accidents there after Bandini's death. The second option was much safer.

I really enjoyed this it reminded me of many hours spent on Grand Prix Legends. Your dramatic improvement with your throttle and brake inputs was really impressive and nursing those things is the key to quick laps in these old cars. How weird that the track 50 years ago seems so much more well-suited to today's cars than the current version of the track!
@ShazenVideos
@ShazenVideos 5 жыл бұрын
But not for todays safety regulations. There's a reason why the chicane after the tunnel has been added. Also the chicane at monza's finish line. That's because the FIA has defined how long and wide run-off areas have to be at certain speeds. The old chicane would need a huge run-off area on the left side of the track (which is not possible, because water and yachts). The first corner also have been narrowed so that the drivers aren't able to drive through that as fast - therefore removing the need for a run-off area on the left side there. Most of the curves on modern tracks have the function to slow down the cars just so that a run-off area can be spared on the parts where it's almost impossible to build them. You can look up any modern circuit and look at the corners and run-off areas, you'll understand why they're built the way they are.

@@ShazenVideos Agreed, if Monaco wasn't the crown jewel of the F1 calendar with such a rich history, I doubt it would have ever been approved to be added to the calendar if proposed as a new track these days. The old track was certainly wider and the cars were much smaller, but safety was completely non existent. Crashing into the harbour is actually a best case scenario if you did happen to lose control. Monaco today, as Jimmy said, is incredibly boring on race day (unless some rain spices things up), but quali is still incredibly fun, even if one team is dominant. But the current cars are too long and wide for Monaco, and seeing how FIA likes adding more and more street circuits to the calendar, I can't see this getting any better.

As I recall from the Movie "Grand Prix", they had to use a manual "Stick" gear box. For the simulation to be genuine back in 1968, it would require the use of a stick shift. Just think how difficult it actually was, having to take one hand off the wheel at such high speeds. As powerful and fast as the new F1s are today , I can see how critical it is to have both hands on the wheel at all times. Nevertheless, the simulation does provides an opportunity to experience how thrilling it would be to drive a racing car, especially for those of us who have a need for speed.

And they used to say Graham Hill was not a natural ... Wonderful video man, really liked it because of the respect you have for the sport; used to do this track in the Lotus 49 in GPL - same situation, tears, sweat ... I didn't have VR or a clutch downshift so it was much much easier for me. I found that the chicane goes a lot better if you left foot brake while keeping a little throttle still as you downshift (or it did on the Lotus in GPL).

Amazing lap! Having tried this in a f2 car, I can appreciate the skill needed. Very interesting to see how bad the brakes on these cars are and the sudden acceleration from that V12! Also watching how you refined your piloting and began to find the racing line makes me want to try it as soon as I can!

Like you said at pre-war Donnington, there was a lot more respect between racers because of what was at risk. At Monaco in the past, as at Donnington Park way back when, it was as much a danger to the spectators as it was the drivers. So much respect and awe for the absolute mad lads who decided to pilot a bathtub full of gasoline for a living.

If you get a chance, there's an old movie I'm sure you've heard of called Grand Prix that was filmed by following the GP circuit back in period. The actors and some of the period F1 drivers did the actual driving. Anyway, there's a scene they did at Monaco by mounting a camera on a stripped GT-40, (the real thing, not the new Ford GT, it was 1960-something,) driven by Bob Bondurant screaming through the course that makes you grip the arms of your chair as if you were actually in danger. It's absolutely one of the best pieces of film for any gear head of all time.

Now you realise that without doubt, 60s racing drivers, especially from 1966 to 1968 were the best. It means, Jim Clarck is the best racing driver of all times. Such power with no downforce at all, more complicated than 80s turbo f1s

Speaking of May 26 and Graham Hill, he had also won the Indianapolis 500 two years earlier with Jim Clark winning the year before that. (Granted, the Indy 500 was on May 30 back then, but still.) Back then, race drivers just wanted to race. It didn't matter where it was or what they were racing with.
