it's mostly the steering lock or the lack thereof that held the modern cars back. WIthout that I think the modern cars would be better. There's no need for them to have that extra lock in modern circuits.

@@Shadow1986 also if you look at Jimmy split times, you can see how he was -12s on the Red bull 2019, then after his mistake his time went up to -8s and he finished the lap with -10s. He could've gone 2 seconds quicker in the 2019 car judging by his own split sectors alone. He was faster than the "race lap" time of 1:14. The 1:10 was out of question.

@@redbarred13 that's not entirely true. Ferrari knew exactly what was going on. The F2004 was an evolution of the F2002, not the F2003. Ferrari had a magnificent team full of top people at their prime. This isn't a coincidence, it's science. Everyone would have been WC on that 2002 and that 2004 cars. In real life the F2004 with Schumacher did a lap record of 1:14.439 in the race. Trulli in the Renault did a Qualifying lap of 1:13.985. A 1:14.014 is the absolute fastest the Ferrari went in final practice by Michael Schumacher. Because they changed the barrier a bit next corner after the swimming chicane the lap record had to be reset. Kinda annoying considering it’s a slight adjustment but hey.

The funny thing is: during the season after the 919 Evo set it's record in Spa, F1 obliterated that time again and reclaimed their status as fastest Race cars out there. Although the up to date F1 cars are this bloody fast, that speed doesn't come as natural as with the 2004 cars. At least from what I can gather from sims. I recon the weight does play an important role as well as things like DRS and ERS deployment, which makes the annual cars very special in that regard.

Your last comment is super interesting because when the RSS F2019 came out, I had the distinct feeling that around some corners that car was X2010 fast. And I think that is true. The 2019 Formula 1 cars are insane. Really curious to see what the 2021 cars will bring. Ground Effect is a cheaper way to get grip so let's see.

Just for a little bit of perspective. In 1987, when Ayrton Senna won the Monaco Grand Prix in the Lotus w/Camel livery, the top qualifying lap was 1:23.039 by Nigel Mansell and the fastest lap in the race was Senna at 1:27.685 on lap 72, so Jimmer's 1:25.8 on the Lotus is very respectable.

The 2019 F1 is using the yellow stripped medium tire. I would expect that the time would be about a second faster with the soft tire.

I wish I could have witnessed an F1 race with those V10s, it sounds so good. Modern F1 isn’t even worth going I rather go see DTM it’s cheaper and more fun

F1 15 years ago was pretty much exactly the same as it is today, only with better sounding engines. If the engine sounds are the only thing making F1 interesting for you then you wouldn't enjoy it even back then.

What I want to know is... Why are you breathing so heavily after every lap? It's not like you're actually racing anyone or there are any circumstances to it.
