I think the defining characteristic of EJ’s swing is not that he does a figure 8, but how violent it is on the forward part of the swing

EJ has way more sideways back tilt, which is essential for his accuracy and arm whip. Definitely not an easy swing to copy and most people would probably end up injured bowling as many games as the pros have to.

Doesnt really look like the ball ever really gets behind you at all. Where you do the first part well and it starts to go inside you'd lift it up straight. But overall pretty good. Missing that EJ snap though which you basically have to be Gumby to do.

I was trying to do that last night .. and man, paying for it today. I find it incredible how good EJ Tackett is in the way that he bowls. Amazing. You bowl that way pretty well, much better than I do, that's for sure. I would be absolutely horrified to see what I look like trying to do this, it's bad enough seeing how I look with my normal form (disgustingly bad, but getting better).

To me, it looks really good! Ive been watching you for a long time and to me, this is some of the best ball motion ive seen from you throwing 1 hand. It may be because you are getting more revs, or it may be because of the way you are coming out of the ball now, but my eyes likes the ball shape much better. The physical game needs work but I think if you work on it, maybe add some aspects of the ej swing to your regular form but still trying to feel comfortable, I think it could work out. Cool video idea!

One thing that EJ Tackett does (and other PBA pro's do too) that I am working on, is they snap their release starting with their shoulder and whipping their elbow, like snapping your friend with a wet towel. Almost every top PBA pro (1 hander) does this move. That is how they get such high rev rates, especially EJ Tackett.
@xouijit77
@xouijit77 3 ай бұрын
Not true. There is no shoulder or arm involved. What you see is an upturn of the wrist on the downswing and a release of the wrist at the bottom of the swing. Hence, the common term "yoyo" release. Most coaches teach, shoulder instability, and arm swing equals very inconsistent shots.

One thing to consider when watching EJ is how he gets his body out of the way almost like a two hander does. Look at his bend in the beginning and the lines you drew compared to your own position through the swing. If you can do that the rest maybe easier to do. Currently it looks like you are going to destroy your left ankle at some point.... no one wants that.

I think if you try this again, you need to focus on getting your hand to the inside of the ball on the downswing. That is what really creates the look of the figure 8 in his swing, and it should help improve your release overall if you can get the feel of your hand moving to the inside of the ball in the swing.

Hi Mike - glad you're trying new things to improve your game. I'm not sure if this is the one for you, but you had some shots in this video that looked really good. I don't know, but the shots that looked the best resulted in you getting the ball about a foot over the foul line and your body position was a little straighter......just sayin'. I was in your shoes as well......bowling great, then my game went to hell, then trying to get it back I tried different styles and felt like an unoiled robot. Nothing was working, then one day I thought just pick up the damn ball and go, and I started bowling better again. It brings in your natural ability that you probably had in the beginning. Anyway, keep working at it and thanks for sharing this video with us.

It’s not the figure 8. The main difference is that EJ swings the ball freely while your swing is extremely stiff. He gets the explosiveness by having his muscles relaxed during the entire swing and only contracts them in a millisecond. It’s like any hit in sports that requires explosiveness. Baseball, Golf, Tennis, Boxing, etc. Your arm, forearm, wrist need to be relaxed in order to hit hard. You have what i call the “bodybuilder syndrome”. You are not swinging the ball. You are doing some kind of biceps routine with your swing and that will never work. Imagine boxing with stiff arms. That’s basically what you are doing with your bowling. Good luck 😊

Backswing looks right. Work the inside of the ball more with hand/wrist/forearm position till point of release. Looks like you’re getting around too soon too much. I do the same… I’ve really started paying attention to where my hand/forearm and wrist are in the entirety of my swing and every step I take until I get to the bottom. Figure 8 is definitely something that will help get your swing in line. Biggest idea is you want to make sure you bring the swing behind you at the top of the swing. One thing I just want to respectfully point out that I’ve noticed in several of your videos one handed is that when you get the to top of the swing your hand turns to the outside of the ball which is going to make it impossible for you to release it how you want to. I would try to make that an area of focus and you might have better results. The video where you where doing what you referred to as the whirlwind swing was closer to figure 8 so I would apply what you were trying there and just tweak that version of it.
@ripvanrevs

Tbh although we’d be honest your bigger than EJ Tackett, we can all agree and yes behind camera looks can be deceiving but Mike is pretty much bigger than him and I wouldn’t blame if he stronger than EJ overall but EJs swing is very much different. His swing is just so violent but also looks natural for EJ. It’s kinda hard to duplicate EJs throw bc for him it’s natural and that probably just his natural strength he’s developed over the years. Even for EJs size, he throws faster, stronger, and more rev rate than any other 1 one hander on the PBA. Only person that comes to my mind is probably Kevin McCune but even himself is a big dude. EJ just a different animal. But for Mike, I’m sure he put more hook and power to it but honestly Mike it looks natural to you tbh. It looked like you were meant to throw it that way. Your first 5 frames on your first game were really good strikes. But I’m sure you wanna feel relaxed throughout the whole swing.

Whereas you have a slower and less whippy release.
