It depends on the era you go for. In the 60s they liked to have a lot of volume. In the 50s they liked the “pageboy”. This had a sleek look with only volume at one side of the parting at the front and a big wave at the ends of the hair. The rest is supposed to lay fairly close to the head. So backcombing just required at the front. But the outcome of this set is still very beautifull😍

So if I'm remembering correctly from my cosmetology days, you need the spray, and the back combing to be able to mold your hair the way you. I believe Miss Victory Violet has a great way of styling her bangs and it’s super easy to replicate

If your ends are too frizzy, use a comb or a brush to brush it against your hand. It will mimic the curve of your hand and all of the strands will bend in that direction. A light pomade also helps
@AshNight12144 жыл бұрын
For me, doing a sleeker look is heavily dependent on using a stronger mix of setting lotion and pomade. Suavecito has been good for my hair, which is VERY prone to frizzing (and is quite long, so it swishes around a lot lol)

My top tips are to use a little fabric or felt on your duckbil clips, to help reduce any potential kinks. I also like to put my hair over my hand and brush into your hand, to align the strands at the end

It looks great 😊 Setting lotion! Frizzy hair starts with the wet set so the product that is the most helpful with getting it to be not frizzy from the start is a good setting lotion while the hair is damp and then roll it up.

It looks gorgeous! You did a great job. The right haircut makes a HUGE difference to how the bottom looks, as does setting lotion to stop the curls from dropping during the brushout and a pomade to smooth flyaways and help mould the hair. Then it is really about practice as everyone has little tricks that work specifically for them but may or may not work for others. x
@jnic26494 жыл бұрын
Looks great! I usually take the bottom out and completely brush, tease, form, and spray before taking out the layer above. Then I form that to sit and curl the same way. It looks more « formed » on my hair but I can’t say if it would work for you too. Maybe worth a try.
@alexandragatto4 жыл бұрын
I usually aim for an authentic 40's rather than a rockabilly/modern pinup look, so just take from this what you like. You always want to pin down any rollers that are going away from the face, having that tension all the way to the scalp is key! Having your bang roller flopping down definitely sabotaged some volume for you there. I have similar hair texture to you and I never have to back comb my bangs (I don't like the damage either!). I just make sure pay attention to how the roller is laying and how that will translate to the set. I was also pleased when you said you'd be using product, but hairspray is actually the one I never bother with! It holds your style for longer and is important for strong teasing and sculpting (like victory rolls), but for smooth and sleek styles the products you need are setting lotion and pomade! Effective, authentic, and less drying than hairspray. (Beware if you only want vegan products, vintage gal fave Lottabody has sheep oil ((lanolin)) in it.) Also yes, your rollers were too big for the style you wanted. I would also be using a paddle brush for the brush-out and focusing more on brushing the ends under and around my hand. All that said, you look beautiful! Definitely more of a 60's style. Just tips if you want to keep striving for more of a 40's look!

I just binged through all your pin-up videos and it looks like you're getting there! I think the key may be to use a wide tooth comb when brushing out the curls. I think the brush is making the ends frizzy. I was also a "no product" kind of girl, but some kind of holding/polishing product (hairspray or oil) and dry shampoo really help in building a look.
@FigmentOfMyImagination4 жыл бұрын
I've been following your pincurl diaries for awhile, you're doing well! What I do for sleekness and to control my curls a bit more is I use a tiny bit (A little goes a loooong way) of pomade on the curls to smooth them into shape. I get the pomade on my hands, rub them together to thin out and distribute it better, then section out a curl and run the pomade down it. After that, I'll do my teasing wherever I want more volume, then smooth the outside of the shape LIGHTLY with the side of a teasing brush. Then I use a comb/brush and the palm or back of my hand (depending on which is easier for the direction I'm going for) to shape the bottom of the curl. A Vintage Vanity has my favorite tutorials, I also like Cherry Dollface and Miss Victory Violet. Hope any of this helps!
@annekoivuholma38724 жыл бұрын
I think you did a wonderful job! I followed Pinup Palmer's tutorial as well and I find that because she has a thick voluptuous hair, all the techniques do not work exactly the same for fine hair. My hair type is very similar to yours (fine with a tiny bit of wave), I have noticed that if I apply mousse (I have Jane Carter Solutions) to semi-wet hair and then roll, it adds shine when I style it pin-up/vintage. For teasing, I use a texture spray rather than hairspray, I find it makes the backcombing a bit more easier to work with. What I noticed first time I did Pinup Palmer's hair, is that I needed to mould the waves back with my hands (very gently pressing the wave creases and pushing the wave up) after smoothing the backcomb, maybe you did that as well off camera. For smoothing and sculpting, I think a softer brush might work better than tangle teazer, like a backcombing brush or a soft bristle brush. I would check Laci Fay's hair tutorials as well if you already haven't done so, she and Pinup Palmer are my greatest teachers :D For the back, in the beginning after teasing, I usually brush back the back section into one "ponytail" as if I was putting an elastic in it and then brush the hair against my thumb forming a uniform roll and then releasing and spreading it, that helps keep the back neat even when you're styling the front. All in all I think your hair looks really beautiful and it definitely has the pinup feel! I think most of my "tips" are probably impossible to understand without actually showing them, just wanted to join in the conversation :) Love your videos!

I dunno if this helps, but when I'm trying to tame frizz in my fluffy 1940s pinup hair, I use a Tiny bit of 18th century hair pomade. Not a lot, and not a modern hair pomade (too thin/greasy). A stiff lip balm can work in a pinch, but not as well. My hair has more texture than yours though. There is this thing I do when brushing/combing where one hand is moving the comb, and the other is smoothing down immediately behind it (helps ground the static charge that floofs the curls and makes them too frizzy). The following hand is the one with a tiny bit of pomade.
@mk-cv9kx4 жыл бұрын
My Tip would be mix a little bit of some sort of curlhold gel with a little bit of a light Hair Oil, after you opend up the curlers. That should calm the structure and not loosen up the curl, than comb softly and Hairspray at the end of everything. The more you spray inbetween steps the more stressed and frizzy the hair gets when you rip up the structure again by trying to form them. Anyways I think it looked amazingly good in the end!💕

Love the makeup! I also think your hair looks lovely! I am thinking about my mom, who was a very attractive young woman in the 40s and 50s: *Layered haircuts weren't the norm; as someone else already noted, they were more of a U cut. That could be a problem for you. *She *always* had a perm in the pinup days. *She thought back combing (or teasing as we called it) was a sin; it ruins your hair and looked "cheap," at least in her day. Finally, do you have suggestions for undoing the back comb, without tearing up your hair?

They were cutting off branches and apparently the building managent hadn't deemed it necessary, to inform the renters about this being planned. So there I was, rather 'scantily clad' (though thankfully not naked), waking up to two strangers trying their best, not to stare at me. I think. At least they weren't ogling, when I woke up and they just pretended, I wasn't there, when I got up and closed the curtains. Very decend of them, to not embarrass me any further, imo.

Awww, still looks pretty regardless. You ended up looking great! You're doing a great job figuring it all out. I have naturally curly hair that's thick, and sometimes I use my natural curls and sometimes I foam roll my hair for vintage styles. So, my hair is not exactly like yours to begin with. But regardless, I highly recommend several things to help in your journey. A Denman brush! That is what many ladies used back then, and I love my Denman. Also, pomade! Again, what many women used back then. But it gives your hair the ability to mold and sculpt without weighing down (don't use too much on fine hair). Hair spray is good, but I only use it at the very end to "set" the hair. And use the pomade to shape and mold and tame frizz/flyaways. Also, the right haircut is key. I have many, many layers cut into my hair, which does a lot of the work for my vintage styles. Having long, mostly one-length hair will be more of a challenge. You can do it, it's just much harder. For the best, kick-butt vintage and/or pinup hair on KZbin, I recommend: Cherry Dollface, Pinup Doll Ashley Marie, Lisa Freemont Street (her hair is more fine), Vintage Vanity, Fitfully Vintage. They are all amazing at hair, and demonstrate both wet-sets and heat-sets. They all do sculpted more deliberate looks, as well as everyday looks.

The struggle is real 😩 especially if you have long hair. I think you should do smaller curls next time and use a different comb, one that has really small teeth, like a rattail comb and use the one comb you used in this video for smoothing the hair. Brad Mondo has a video on which comb and brush is for what and if I remember correctly he said that too. Still it's a cute look 😊👌

Then when I brush it out I tease and use some hairspray. To get rid of the frizz I use the some men’s hair cream/gel (they come in little tubs like wax but is water based and easier to spread.) It’s very sticky when it’s wet but it dries well.

As someone who also has baby fine hair, I think your main problem is not too technique-based. You're styling well. But you really do need a vintage cut to support those styles. Horseshoe shape cut with at least one long layer will be enough. You don't really need to go full force with those 40s diagrams that are out there to see good results. Additionally, pin curls will give you more control over the outcome of your style than rollers. Rolling things on or off base and in whichever direction will determine your final result. The 40s waterfall pattern is much easier if you alternate pin curl directions- one row clockwise, one row counter-clockwise, next row clockwise, and so on. Your result still looks really beautiful, though! And your makeup is GORGEOUS!! Good luck!! :)

You look amazing in that hair and makeup, and i think that‘s the neatest styling of your curls so far. When i hear „pinup hair“, i think dita von teese. While your hair did remind me of dita, i don‘t think her hair is quite as pouffy at the top as yours turned out. I always thought pinup hair is more bottom-heavy. Maybe you need extensions to fill out your ends, so you can get big, luscious curls there.

Maybe try to roll everything in one direction for each side instead of doing the "back" curls for the top section of your hair ? When I do it on myself it makes it look more vintage for some reason. I'm not a native English speaker neither so I don't know if I described it well.
