Sorry to hear that you had a rough week, wishing you well Usually enjoy plant care vids 😊 To answer your question: Most of my non-Hoya plants are in a soil/bark/perlite (that kind of stuff) mix. I try to mix them up in a way that they all need water at about the same time weekly, so some have a bit more soil and some have a bit more bark/perlite/etc. (or some have a slightly larger pot and some a very small one) Then theres the Hoyas… most of those are in pure tree fern. Slow drinkers have bark and perlite in the tree fern. Heavy drinkers and windowsill Hoyas get a larger pot, a self watering pot or a soil mix. There are also a few plants in pon, Pipers, Aglaonema and a Chameodorea Metallica. I feel out of touch with those… I don’t see their roots in the self watering pots (only in the reservoir sometimes) and its hard to keep track of how much they drink. Good catch on that moss pole! It makes total sense to me that people quit this hobby. Often we call it “collecting”, but houseplants aren’t like collectibles… they need a lot more care. A lot of plants are financially accessible (Im not talking about the new hyped triple digit or higher ones), buying one every now and then fills up the house quickly… and it looks pretty… But then comes the care, the watering, the repottings, the poles/stakes… (and oftentimes even pests) it quickly becomes overwhelming. For the ones for who it becomes too much, their plants start declining, their prized “collection” suddenly looks bad and still needs a lot of work… Then there is also propagating…. Something breaks off of a plant and it is “still alive” so we have to take care of it. This increases the workload that was already high. Then if the propping succeeds…. It leads to more plantcare (repotting etc) and/or rehoming it… selling/swapping etc also takes up a lot of time and energy… In between this all is also the massive pricetag of buying coverpots, poles/stakes, soil mix ingredients, electricity bills etcetc that in total usually adds up to more than the initial purchase of the plant. Some people get depressed due to the prices of some unrealistic wishlist plants… since everything that is produced everywhere gets posted on the internet before it is really accessible… and it can take many years before such plants can be available at reasonable prices, if at all, many people get upset while chasing down their elusive unicorns Theres probably many more reasons 😂 Many many pitfalls and all of us fall into one or several of them at some point. And for some it is just too much to get up from, I totally get that. Personally I feel plants are so rewarding and worth all the work… but it has to stay manageable (which is a vague thing and different for each person) I feel like this should generally be discussed more… to help people… Not only how to deal with plantburnout/plantdepression/plantoverwhelm but also how to stay realistic/how to prevent falling into these traps. Not sure how to end this “email comment” Hope its not too long or too (anything else)😅 Hoping you’ll feel better Ill resume watching the video 😉 * you reminded me to get pings 🌱🌱🌱 You even did the chores you dreaded while not feeling well, Im happy for you that you got it done!

My soil mix consists of chunky perlite, horticultural charcoal, worm castings, orchid bark and fox farm. 💚 still nervous about switching to pon as im an over waterer so i dnt want root rot. (My mix dries out so quickly and i like using terracotta which makes it dry out even quicker lol).

I use mostly DIY mixes, with multiple individual ingredients from optimize organics (pumice, leca, perlite, etc), usually mixed with orchiata (two different sizes), zeolite, and a small amount of promix soil! I don't do the same exact mix or ratios every time, but some variation on a really chunky mix

Hey Fern, when I mix my phone N I use a large cup and go from bag to bag and mix a bit along the way. It is much less stressful and probably takes less time than trying to mix a huge batch all at once. Rinsing PON is one of my least favorite plant chores. But it must be done as I grow mostly in no drainage. It would be disastrous if I didn't pre-rinse. I hope you are feeling better!
@LeafyConversationsКүн бұрын
I do not grow in PON at all. I still believe the Tree Fern Soil I make makes my plants happiest and less root rot occurs. I am going to do a video on what I am doing now too it may be a big mistake, but I’ll find out. 😮

Yayyy pon!! You taught me how to do this a couple/few years ago! I am so grateful that you are teaching this 💜 you are strong!! That stuff is rough to stir! 😂 these RA hands don’t work too well so I put everything in like a couple of cups at a time 😂 I doubt I’d ever get ALL of my plants in pon because my big plants (here’s looking at you my beautiful huge snake plant!) would NEVER be able to do that lmao “Based on vibes”….well those vibes are on fleek!! 😎 Awww I’m sorry you’re not feeling on top of your game 😢 you look amazing though! You know I love my nerdy Fern 🥰 Don’t you just love sitting and watching a plant you think MIGHT be dying and you keep forgetting to check on it? 😂 oh is that just me? 🤔🤣 Awwww the pep talk to yourself about the sulfur…poor thing I just want to tell you to sit down and let me do it! 😢 your vibes are awesome always! Even in your “down” moments you’re still a beautiful ray of light in this crazy world and I appreciate you ❤ I hope your flat mite problem is solved soon and I always enjoy hanging out with you ❤ hopefully you’re on the mend now!!

The Zeolite I purchased in the States was blue colored. Couldn't tell if yours is also. It is also very spendy here so I don't use very much of it. That road mix you use, I think, is the same as a product they use to soak up oil in auto shops. It is just fired clay and can be purchased at a very good price here anyway. Hope you are better. That dizziness thing is not fun and it can take awhile to completely go away. I wish they understood the cause better. I believe they just think it is a virus of some sort.
