They've done such an incredible job of developing the characters in a short space of time thus far. The added depth to Henry and Sam's story makes it all the more emotionally impactful, and they managed to do all of that in just one episode, same way they did with Bill and Frank, it's nothing short of a remarkable feat

yeah not many writers can manage to do something like this but the fact they've done it 3 times now is insane!! Sarah with only about 30 minutes, bill and frank, and now sam and henry it's insaneee

@@iris-xo Exactly. Sarah's actor (Nico Parker) did such an exceptional job of showcasing the range of emotions on display in just 30 minutes, and her acting during THAT scene was phenomenal as well! A huge amount of credit also goes to the actors for really selling every scene. Nick Offerman was phenomenal in episode 3. Lamar Johnson (Henry's actor) was exceptional in this episode, Keivonn (Sam's actor) was incredible as well. Even Pedro and Bella were absolutely sublime in this episode! The writers, directors and actors all knocked it out of the park on all 3 occasions

Not sure if anyone else noticed the change or paid any mind to it has any thoughts about it - but I like how they showed Ellie's direct reaction to Henry shooting himself, instead of it showing us Joel's reaction again, since we already have that from the game. Bella's acting in this episode was absolutely phenomenal, especially at the end. Her whimpers when Sam was attacking her after he turned, and the cry she let out as Henry shot himself. Very heart wrenching performance. Just listening to her, looking at her - you can intimately feel all that distress.

Ellie's desperation mixed with a bit of hope in trying to save Sam, and Sam buying into the hope was so incredibly sad to see. It clearly takes a huge toll on her and adds to her survivor's guilt, but it also now gives her added motivation to be the cure for mankind. Another thing that hit me really hard in the episode was his own brother being Henry's first direct kill, his brother who looked up to him as his own superhero. Everything about their story was perfectly executed, what an incredibly tragic episode. The acting in this episode was exceptional as well

31:12 Yep, exactly, the ending is now gonna hold even more weight because of what went down in this episode. The changes in the show for the most part have truly elevated the character depth and the narrative to new emotional heights, and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds. The changes in this episode alone were so incredibly impactful as well; Sam being younger and deaf makes for an even better dynamic between him and Henry (as he's more dependent on Henry), Ellie desperately trying to save Sam and failing to do so adds to her emotional turmoil and survivor's guilt and Henry's first kill being his own brother are all changes that truly enrich the narrative and the characters. This episode is my favourite so far, with ep3 being a close second. The editing was great in this episode as well! Can't wait for your reaction to the rest of the season, and we have 4 episodes left now, more than halfway through already ☹️

The show does a fantastic shop to keep us, videogame fans, at the edge of our seats by changeing some things. I love the show for that. The weekly episodes are great too. It feels like a community event. We can process what we see, talk about it. The show benefits immensely from this release schedule.

Remember Joel said its easier for the kids because they don't have anyone else relying on them, but Ellie does have other people relying on her and I think her failure to save Sam really hits that home for her.

Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken with hope) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save". Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for this" were her words in episode 2. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end. I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did. In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel. There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again. Kathleen kills traitors. This is not the point that makes her particularly malicious. That's what you do with traitors. The people who betray their own people are worse than the enemy himself. You see the enemy coming, traitors shoot you in the back. And you have to assume, if you let them live, that they will do it again at any time. In the history of all revolutions, very few have ended bloodlessly, and very few have left their enemies alive after their victory. They were lynched. So nothing happens here that hasn't happened 1000 times before. In addition, there are no more laws. The only thing Kathleen does differently here is that her focus is exclusively on revenge on Henry and unfortunately at the expense of everyone else in her group. She was a good leader for the revolution, but when that was done, someone else would have had to take over. In the end, unfortunately, she was right. You cannot deceive fate. Henry sold all his people and the revolution for medicines, killed a good man and Sam died anyway. This by his own hand. It doesn't get any worse. On the other hand, if Sam hadn't betrayed the leader, the revolution had never come, because the leader lacked the radicalism his sister had. It's just a loose loose situation. Misfortune on all sides, no matter how you spin it. I felt Kathleen's death was fitting. I mean she made it clear beforehand that she didn't care about children and was then killed by a child clicker. An interesting feature of the show so far is that real brutality is only shown to us when Ellie sees it. We see Joel beating the soldier to death in episode 1 because Ellie is there and sees it. Ellie tortures and kills the stalker in episode 3. We see Joel's sniper kills because Ellie sees them. We see Henry's death, Sam being shot and Kathleen's death. With all other killings (Old Sniper, Bryan) you only hear it because the camera is focused on Ellie while she doesn't see these killings herself. Unfortunately, I didn't like 3 little things about the episode because they were outstanding stupid written and therefore out of character. All 3 scenes concern Henry. They enter the tunnel and he senselessly begins to speak louder than his normal volume. The same stupidity then again shortly before the sniper. And he just lets Sam go forward in the tunnel to enter an unsecured room, this kindergarten. That was just inappropriate, because this character is actually clever. I don't know if you played part 2, if not read no further. SPOILERS but with reference to Kathleen. Ellie becomes Kathleen. In principle, she does nothing else than Kathleen. A loved one is taken from her and she goes on a vendetta campaign. All this at the expense of her friends and without considering the consequences or she accepts them approvingly. So if one didn't condemn Ellie for that at the time, maybe one shouldn't do the same with Kathleen.

It seems the inference is that FEDRA pushed the Infected underground away from the area of the QZ; the escape plan had our characters pop out of the tunnels right outside of the QZ and the truck explosion weakened the flooring above a tunnel/region packed with Infected (and where cordyceps has weakened the foundations). Makes the bit of irony of how FEDRA protected the people from the Infected (but then didn't protect the people from themselves) a bit more pointed when Kathleen chooses to ignore the signs of the Infected breaking back through into the underground areas of the QZ.

This episode is another reminder of how brutal and unforgiving this world is, regardless of who you are. Something as simple as running across a group of infected has catastrophic effects to deal with and even doing the right thing has consequences. It’s no wonder Joel closed his heart off in the first place. The quicker you get attached to someone, the more likely you are to lose them. But GOD, does it hurt EVERY TIME they make us fall in love with someone and then take them away.

The KC resistance lasted less than 2 weeks because of one lady's need for vengeance. The old man in the House was so old and just DONE with everything. Joel apparently noticed it. Which is why he was BEGGING him to not do it. The old man wanted to die and for joel to kill him 🥲🥲 I imagine that if Sam and Henry either got caught or left before Joel and Ellie got there. I also like the changes of Sam being deaf because he HAS to rely on Henry more. Plus Show Henry hasn't hurt or killed anyone and the first person he did kill was his brother 🥲

Sam goes from a teenager in the game to a child on the show that's deaf, I had no idea he was deaf in real life. It's more devastating on the show than the game. When I saw the blood when Henry killed Sam, it made me cry because when my dad died 8 months ago, he was found in his kitchen, and their was a lot of blood on the kitchen floor

Has anyone else picked up on the eerie and heartbreaking foreshadowing early on in the episode when Dr. Edelstein says to Henry "The tunnels? Why go to the trouble. You can kill yourself right here." when Henry mentioned about escaping through the tunnels (because of the infected known to be underground)? It made it that much more tragic when Henry takes his own life after he shoots Sam.

Aww man, this was so exhilarating, heartwarming, and depressing all at once :') It's hard for me to pick a favorite episode in this show bc each one is so good when it comes to storytelling, worldbuilding, and small character moments. But the way they were able to build off of episode 4, fit so many elements and themes, and add more meaningful moments to the already iconic scenes from the game, has me obsessed with how they're setting up for things to come. During the scene with the infected, the tension and non-verbal communication between Joel with the gun and Ellie running to help Sam + Henry was an amazing set-piece; it was so similar to the game yet was so much tenser with the newly added history between Kathleen and Henry. And oh man, the conversation between Sam and Ellie- when I first learned that they were casting a younger, deaf actor to play Sam, I was so curious as to how that scene might play out. And boy did it really add to the emotion, along with Ellie trying to save him with her blood and making her immunity feel like an even heavier burden. Every change they've made in this show has been amazing at showing how Joel and Ellie's motivations are being pushed in different directions- Joel's motivation for protecting Ellie grows, while Ellie becomes more dead-set on reaching the Fireflies to make a viable cure. All the actors in this episode were incredible and I have to give a special shout-out to Bella's performance in that final scene with Sam and Henry (and the previous episode when she shot Bryan!); it's clear that she was cast for her ability to really showcase Ellie's character development and range of emotions with everything she and Joel have been through, and I hope more people will now recognize that after this episode. Awesome reaction guys, and I'm loving the new editing style! At first I felt like something was off until I realized I could actually see both of your faces a lot more clearly now lmao. Looking forward to Sunday's new episode destroying me for the 6th time in a row!

the horde of infected and that BLOATER!!! that scene was just too cool! i loved the details they added from the game like the picture or ish! and i think changing the collection of magazines from getting them from bill to something she can bond with sam over was a nice touch! this episode was just so heartbreaking. 4 more episodes to go and i believe we’ll be getting the “you have no idea what loss is” scene in the next episode 😬. loved your reaction as always guys and love the new editing style!

20:55 I think that he was an old man who spent most of life in a normal world. And after 20yrs of shit... he had just ran his course. Here is, alone in this cul de sac, keeping watch. He can barely aim properly in the dark. I 100% interpreted this as a suicide. He just couldn't do it himself. He had absolutely 0% chance of killing Joel there. A person who wanted to live would've listened to Joel and surrendered. On the official podcast for the show, they say as much. Craig calls it a "suicide by cop" situation. And Neil connected it to the optional conversation in the game where Ellie remarks that two people (who were found dead in a bathtub in the Pittsburgh hotel) "took the easy way out". Joel replies that, "it ain't easy". Joel recognizes this in this man, because he understands that hopelessness as well. That's probably why he didn't wanna do it. He felt pity. But he ended up having to kill him.

Great reaction again team, what an amazing episode, I was hoping for another ending too Sarah, but nope ..I loved the change with Sam being younger, it made Ellie's relationship with him more like an older sibling rather than awkward teens ..and it raises the stakes for her feeling protective of him. Henry's reaction was great as well, you coul see the shock and horror at the action he took, but also the dawning despair over losing the one person he had fought to save which included betraying his friend. all of that in vain.. such a bleak ending..and Ellie walking off as Joel did in ep 2 after losing Tess, she's learning to bury her feelings like Joel..

Sam can't hear that's given. If no one ever came into his view or touched him he would just probably sit there forever. It may look like he's reacting to sunlight just like in ep 2 that's why he's turned away but as we noticed, the morning just came, and he looks like he's been that way for a while. I'd like to think that he turned around where he can't see Ellie because he knows what'll happen if he did. He don't wanna hurt her. I can't with this pain.

The episode did a good job of showing both sides of a conflict: Henry trying to save his brother and Kathleen trying to avenge hers. I just think the show then cheats by having her talk about Sam deserving to die to make sure the audience doesn't side with her. And she's right too: Sam still dies. All that bloodshed and it was for nothing.

I really think this episode may be the most important of the series. With both of the games being like one big empathy test, I think this will really make or break if season 2 works out. Just like how TLOU2 was super controversial, "the scene" and "the other protagonist", could tank the show. I really hope the show's fanbase will have the patience to give it a chance.

🫶🏽Thanks for your heartfelt reaction! I’d like to drop a few notes of my own on Kathleen. She is in essence this world’s version of Senator Katie Porter, but the unhinged version with an armed militia behind her. She’s the personification of a very devoted suburban mom and loving sister. She’s ruthlessly resourceful, knows the exact amount of supplies, rations, etc. the one who gets all the chores, groceries & errands done. She’s highly efficient & organized, out of love. Even her voice has that sunny inviting sing-song quality. But her Jesus-like loving brother Michael was her true core & everything she did before was because of him helping ground her, especially through the fascistic rule of FEDRA in Kansas City. She worshiped him. Michael’s capture, torture & eventual murder completely annihilated her inside to the point that from then on her entire existence depended on hunting down & wreaking vengeance - at any cost. So, imagine now she is the leader of this new violent army - a leader who is ruthlessly resourceful, knows the exact amount of supplies, rations, etc. the one who gets all the chores, groceries & errands done, efficient & organized - no longer out of love but hate. She has nothing to lose, she lost everything because they killed someone she loves. Now, does that remind you of certain main playable characters in the games?😉
