One thing I will never understand about Craftworlds is how on more than one occasion a craftworld was either attacked or almost attacked by a Tyranid hive fleet when: 1. Tyranids are *the* slowest FTL users to the point some hive fleets have literally starved to death while in transit 2. Eldar psychics should be able to detect the big fuck-off Shadow in the Warp coming a million light years away 3. Craftworlds are ships so they can literally just *move out of the goddamn way.* My only plausible explanation is whoever is flying those things must just be like constantly drinking at the wheel or something.
@gavinboyer463411 ай бұрын
Counterpoint, I don't think they can. I think the craftworlds are two big to enter the webway, and I'm pretty sure entering the warp is a big no-no when Slaanesh is unreasonably vigilant.
@bengonzalez521511 ай бұрын
Also they could have come out of the warp way too close to a hive fleet to properly evade? That is also a possibility.
@theodorehodbor508011 ай бұрын
@@gavinboyer4634 Craftworlds can enter the webway, however only at specific gates large enough to pass them through, so you are right in that they're more limited in terms of other Eldar ships. However, counter to that is Tyranid FTL fucking sucks in that it is probably *the* most cumbersome and slow form of FTL in the setting. Tyranid Narvhals use the gravity of stars to open gravity-well corridors that allow the fleet to travel at FTL through bending spacetime itself, however while "FTL" this is probably the slowest form of FTL possible in that it takes months to basically reach any destination. Along with that their course cannot be changed while in this corridor outside of dropping out early and once at a system they have to drop out at the very edge of it and go at sublight from there. This is even worse in that it's also stated that Tyranid sublight speed is even more slow in comparison in that it takes literally years to go from the edge of a system to a target planet. While rebellions are a nice bonus this is probably *the* main reason why Genestealer cults exist, without them to act as a guiding light there's a good chance a hive fleet could spend almost a decade getting to a system just to find it barren and starve to death as a result. Pretty much the only way humans keep getting caught by Tyranids is that they're stuck on stationary objects, the Administratum is even slower than Tyranid FTL, and the Shadow in the Warp extends light-years ahead of the fleet itself and stops all warp travel preemptively.

My favourite example of Eldar perfidy is from the second Battlefleet Gothic videogame. If you ally with the Eldar, they ask for your help defending a Craftworld against the Inquisition. After this, they terminate the alliance because they technically helped you in a battle (that you fought on their behalf), and they never said anything about how long the alliance would last. This is after you fight a Chaos fleet to steal back an ancient relic for them, by the way. At least it stops Eldar raids for the rest of the campaign, but still.

I started playing Eldar recently but their fiction is sooooo terrible.

@DemigodoftheSea11 ай бұрын
@@RobotTanuki Honestly as time goes on, I desperately just think they need to acknowledge the Eldar had emotions, and feelings, and can be decent people with empathy towards the other races. Just like how they acknowledged _sometimes_ the Imperium will cooperate with Xenos. And past that, they need to give Craftworlds their own minor goals, and a reason to exist and not just fuck off to the far ends of the galaxy and only emerge when they need soul stones. Even if that reason is just recognizing Chaos is the biggest threat and thus cooperating with other races, or being tied, in some way, to certain maiden worlds instead of the vague "The Maiden Worlds are in trouble!", and thus give them a proper anchor to the setting. And to make it even better; intertwine leadership with outside forces. Tie the Eldar into Rogue Trader Dynasties or Inquisitorial conspiracies. The Craftworlds themselves don't need to appear so long as you have cool named characters who go out and do shit in spite of that, and then the Craftworlds don't need to show up when shit gets real.

Fun fact about the Howling Banshees: In Eldar mythology, they were initially the daughters of Morai-Heg (eldar crone godess and wife of Khaine if I'm not mistaken) however at some point Heg wanted to drink her own blood cuz it made whoever drak it wiser but only one god could harm other gods and it was Khaine As such she sent her Banshiees to pester and annoy Khaine to cut her hand off and when he ultimatley did so she just gave 'em to him as thanks It's a stupid, convoluted, and weirdly metal bit of lore that I just adore and screams 40k to me

Here's the TLDR for those who don't want to read my Space Elf essay: I like the Craftworld Eldar. I dont love all of them. But I love parts of them. "The Fall" as a central story hook for their faction and their struggle that comes from it are my favorite parts of their lore. Plus I think that Aspect Warriors and Phoenix Lords are dope AF. But they have flaws, their stuck-up know-it-all attitude can really put people off and make them unlikable for some. Now for the long version. Let me preface my opinions and evidence with this: I havent consumed much 40K fiction as of yet. I have only owned two White Dwarfs in my lifetime to get ahold of rules supplaments. And alot of my 40K lore knowledge comes from videos and content like this. Basically, I'm not a 40K lore expert, and *maybe* what I'm about to say has some inconsistencies to it with where the faction is lore-wise currently. I will also not be talking about their Tabletop mechanics. Not liking a faction because you dont like their lore is different to not liking them because GW gives them busted rules as incentive to sell their aging sculpts. But with all that being said, its time to start Elf-splaining: I like "The Fall of the Eldar". I like what it represents in the lore not only to the Eldar factions but also basically every other faction in the setting. The Eldar *created* a Chaos God, one that then proceeded to devour most of their species and continues to hound them all until they are all devoured to their last. Now they are a dying race, the last dregs of an empire killed overnight by their own hubris. Something like that changes you, your culture, your very world. And an event that cataclysmic will have the survivors all reacting differently. The Craftworld Eldar reacted by going in as far of the opposite direction as the reasonably could. They lead lives of strict discipline because they dont want to risk the influence of Slaanesh, or squandering what they see as a chance at redemption for their people. The point is that they have gone to the *exact opposite* extreme as the Drukhari in how they've dealt with "The Fall". These are the aspects of the Craftworld lore I find most interesting. They live on a knifes edge, teetering on the brink of total extinction and damnation if they cannot find redemption. There's also less, lore-centric stuff I like about them. I LOVE Aspect Warriors and Phoenix Lords. I love the idea of a hyper-specialist that has trained in their chosen art for hundreds if not thousands of years. And I like that the Phoenix Lords themselves are (supposed to be) Primarch-Teir characters and (are meant to) givr the Eldar their own roster of "special guys" like the Space Marine Primarchs. With that being said, I at least understand why people dont like the Craftworld Eldar. Too often are they are written like a bunch of smug know-it-alls, who think that they're better than everyone else and sometimes simply refuse to even prove it. I cant even justify this kind of writing by saying- "Well, their Farseers must have read the future, and learned that if they *ever* shared detailed knowledge to a human, they'd turn to Chaos no matter what and kill their Craftworld." That's just bad writing. I'm not going to make or dissect that argument in earnest. Writing like that comes from people who are obligated to include a fight with a Xenos faction so that GW can remind their audience that the Imperium aren't the "good guys" when they're fighting a sympathetic, or at least, a not outwardly aggressive Xenos group. So I get it, the Craftworld Eldar aren't written like the dying race of people who struggle to grab the last flickering threads of hope and light in a deep dark galaxy that want them all dead. They're written like snooty know-it-alls, who talk down to everyone else because they think they're just so much smarter. If you don't like the Craftworlds for how they're portrayed in that manner, then I understand. I've even grappled with and thought alot about why I like the Craftworlds in the first place while writing this post. I may love how the Eldar's fall from grace has changed them as a species, and I like that the Craftworlds' "solution" to it is to live a life of absolute control through harsh discipline. But I think the Lumineth in AoS do all of that better than the 40K Eldar. But like the Eldar, I believe theres hope. Maybe, just maybe, one day, GW will put the same level of time, thought and effort into the lore of the Eldar that the Necrons got at the start of 9th edition. I didnt experience much of 9th, but from what I heard, Necrons became one of the most popular factions overnight because GW actually invested something into them. Good fiction, revamped, more thoughtful lore that focused on the humanity of a Xenos faction of soulless machines. If GW could do that with Necrons, they can do it to the Craftworlds too. I'm not expecting this post to change hearts and minds. Or to suddenly create a new populace of Craftworld Eldar players. I wanted to explain in-deapth what I personally like about the Craftworlds and I did that. But if someone decides to take another look at this slightly messy little faction in the setting we all enjoy, and sees the good in it, that'd be nice too.

Then there is the communication issue between lore and codex writters. They basically don't talk to much, but it seems to get better. And than, there is the problem that, for a long time, that not a lot of people at GW did keep track of ther lore progression. That's why we have weird power creeps, plot holes plot armor and contradictions. Again, they seem to just recently check on consistency... sometimes. So yeah, fun times I gues.

At the time, a lot of units had rules, but no official models and third-party companies were selling kits for those units. GW said you can't do that, but the courts said, "If you don't make the model, you can't stop the third-parties". That's why the Parasite, the Doom, and even Mycetic Spores (drop pods) got removed. We eventually got the Parasite back, we got a different drop pod kit a while back, and the Neurotyrant is almost the Doom if you squint. The best thing they could do for 40k is say the eldari died off

Of all the eldar factions the exodites are really the only ones that kinda catch my interest. The craftworld eldar are way too "lawful good" for me, in a way that makes it look really forced imo. Meanwhile the dark eldar are so far off the other end of the spectrum, that i can not take them seriously. There is something about the whole "reject modernity, return to knife eared monkeigh" attitude I enjoy about the exodites... And yes 90% of my enjoment comes from the thought of fielding an army of dinosaur riding spacewizards.

Tolkien has soured me so thoroughly on the premise of elves that I've consistently ignored the Eldar, despite them on paper having a lot of my favorite shit in the whole setting.

I always like videos like these. I primarily play Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Aeldari, Drukhari. World Eaters. I think they are all cool. I do not get that big into the lore and will always care less about if it is really cool. I honestly love the simplicity of the Aeldari. Lots of room and freedom to do what ever you want with the faction. I have been working on my own blood angel successor chapter and my hell is it getting complicated, i am not trying to impress space marine nerds and i am trying to stay pretty surface level but it is still complicated where as my own craftworld was pretty damn simple to do. Also Canada is a part of North America and there for count as America. Not sure how the US got the America title dispite it being a continent land mass lol.

As someone who is a massive eldar fan, and particularly a fan of eldrad, I had to understandably brace myself before watching this video. I will say, I agree with eldar lore trying to have one foot on two boats, on holding on to old lore while attempting to progress new lore is a big obstruction to actually progressing anything. But, to be fair, when does GW progress anything for anyone? They want things to remain static. Anyways, as for a lot of their lore being shafted, there's a lot of reasons. Late 2000s and early 2010s, there was just a lot of Eldar getting shafted in lore. Imperium favoritism, as much as we play it off for fun, is real, and kind of sucks in a setting where people often like to take sides with the big players. We are told the eldar are a dying race, but even in such small numbers their inherent skills and advancement of their psychic and technological prowess helps them hold off their eventual demise long enough even in this extremely hostile galaxy. And all of that gets thrown out the window the moment a small chapter of space marines SOMEHOW manage to invade and destroy an entire craftworld, which should be some of the most well defended locations in the entire galaxy. A lore fuck up so bad that GW actively made up excuses to explain it later. Their are instances where the eldar are treated as mystical and rare, and the next instance they are killed by the thousands, with no regards to the gravity of what the death of a 1000 year old being should be like. There's this really annoying dissonance for people who are invested in eldar lore and then actually trying to read any of it. A lot of their stories have amazing premises, but ended up having subpar writing or no solid direction. That and Gav Thorpe writing their biggest stuff, like the Ynnari books, is such a hit or miss. I don't think he's as much of a problem as someone like, say, matt ward. He has written some amazing stuff, like the Heirs of the Laughing god (which, Arthur, if you are looking at this comment, please give it a listen. I know you find the clowns icky, but this is actually fun). And when he started, the Ynnari books were awesome! It had this feel of a epic fantasy adventure, which is a flavour of writing I think only the eldar can truly portray in the 40k setting, and it was nice. A rag tag group of people from different walks of life coming together to achieve something cool for the eldar. There was an opportunity to explore more eldar lore, their different factions, locations, cultures. Except, by the final book, where Gav just kinda... Gives up. I don't know why he, or maybe GW, decided to go in that direction, but it was just... bad. Its not unsalvageable, but like.... Why? And finally, there's just that whole, weird, hate for elves that I see online so much nowadays. I'm gonna be honest, it came as a surprise to me how much elves in any setting are often looked at with disdain. My intake of fantasy growing up was largely Warcraft and Dragon age, where the weird elf hate is a lot less prevalent. But it permeates heavily in settings like 40k and elder scrolls, which, you know what, is fair enough. But, it gets a bit self propagating at some point where some people just wanna jump on a bandwagon (since 70% of this community learns their lore from memes), and its tiring when the mention of eldar coming up in anything is instantly reacted with generic comment about burning xenos #120. Regardless, Eldrad did nothing wrong. Praise Asuryan. ^^

I like the dynamic of elf versus human rivalry. I like the idea that humans try to leave elfs alone but we reproduce too fast and encroach into their spaces. That trope mostly fits in 40k. Mostly, except for the whole "suffer not the xeno to live" thing...

I like to think of Craftworld Eldar as space Mormons who fled the hedonistic culture of the Eldar empire to live on giant spaceships.

As far as melee specialized Eldars go, I prefer the Striking Scorpions to the Howling Banshees: they are basically navy seals, like they are said to be visibly stronger and more heavily built than regular Eldars, and their special little tidbit about their Phoenix Lord is cool too.

I actually like the Craftworld Eldar more than most elf archetypes. Them being elitest xenophobes works in this setting. Also they have good reason to look down their nose at humanity in this setting unlike in other settings. Humans aren't really putting our best foot forward in 40k.

Eldar... back in the days of owning WH40k armies: me: newbie with a minimal army to play with opponent: experienced player with eldar who has all the bells and whistles, with a bit of a "eldary" battle attitude too to be fair battle record: 1-2 matches for him to know what to take to always counter my newb army -> hundreds of losses since final resolution: my newbie army gets sold Also repeated the exact same experience with another army, until life took me away from old home region and also effectively ended my WH hobby.

Well, the do know better than the Imperium about not making chaos stronger. It took them millienias of hedonistic excess to make slaanesh, while the Emperor bass-boosted chaos from a threat in the edges to the greatest existencal threat next to tyranids while he actively tried to combat them, in the span of a few centuries.

I am reading the path of the Eldar trilogy and I really like the picture that is painted of the Eldar Society. Furthermore I think that reducing Craftworld Eldar lore to eldrad and his dumb schemes is not fair as there are many lore entries that focus on the Eldar and don’t have them as plot devices in other stories
