So let me get this right: in _Lightlark,_ Poppy and Terra are Isla’s guardians who basically keep her training in war and seduction 24/7. They tell her that her mom failed to kill her dad, and that instead her dad killed her mom. Isla doesn’t like or trust them very much, which is why she’s plotting a different solution with Celeste. Then it turns out that Poppy and Terra murdered her parents so Isla claps them in jail. Cut to _Skyshade,_ where Poppy and Terra are lovely people who never intended to hurt Isla at all and were too afraid(?) to tell her that _Isla_ killed her parents by… somehow collapsing the hospital on top of everyone but her? And then they somehow conspired to hide Isla’s powers from her while telling her her dad killed her mom and then somehow died himself? What I can’t figure out is why Poppy and Terra didn’t immediately announce their innocence when Isla accused them of murdering her parents. And how did Isla go from being so powerful she inadvertently murdered her parents when she was a scant few hours or days old, to growing up believing she had no powers at all? I thought her powers were somehow short-circuiting each other. I’m beginning to think Alex Aster may not have planned this series very well.
@littleduckbookclub6 күн бұрын
To explain why Isla thought she had no power, the story mentions that her mentors are feeding her shademade (the anti magic metal) with every meal, which is insane. Like, even if that worked wouldn't that also imply that Isla should get her powers back once she's on Lightlark for the Fantasy Hunger Games But Not TM? Their personality swap is also just. So nonsensical. Aster wanted a twist and went for the most random stuff, I guess. I actually don't think I'll ever get over the idea of a) a modern style hospital in the Wildling lands and b) the fact that Isla somehow killed her parents at birth because she's just that much of a powerhouse. The mental image is too funny.

About that bit at the end talking about Aster’s passion missing from when she was fighting to get her book published, I have a hard time believing it was that hard for her. Sure she talked a big game about being a struggling author but she had other books published before while acting like Lightlark was plucked from obscurity, then she lied about what tropes were going to be in the first book to get attention, and lied about struggling financially when she comes from a family of millionaires. Lightlark’s cover reveal was an event in Times Square, that’s not normal. If she’s passionate about anything, it’s cashing in on what trends are popular. I bet the only reason the dragon was there is because of Fourth Wing.
@littleduckbookclub8 күн бұрын
I definitely agree that Aster has likely exaggerated the Lightlark publishing story quite a lot and there is really no way to see what is actually true, but I do feel even if it was already derivative and a bit on the trend chaser side, the first book had a kind of? juvenile enthusiasm? that felt like Aster was enjoying herself. I don't see this in the later books at all anymore but also I'm aware this is entirely projection and we can never know how she feels about these books unless she goes on record somewhere lol I wasn't even thinking about that dragon riding but I would not be surprised if it's in there because of Fourth Wing....

This was hilarious, thank you so much for the presentation with the immaculate renditions of whatever the fuck is going on in Lightlarkshadedarkbane! I honestly feel like the author never goes back to amend anything and that's what makes the story just get more and more convoluted. She discovers one plothole and then adds another bit of magic on top that just happens to never have been mentioned or happens to be the one convenient exception to the rule. Isla's backstory was honestly bonkers and it's been three books now and just like you (despite watching several videos about the first two) I could not tell you who dies when someone else dies and who would stay alive. Maybe Aster should hand out flowcharts together with the book. Ignore maps that don't make sense, I need diagrams! Lastly, the interactions with/descriptions of Mr Puddle-of-blood-in-his-living-room had me cackling throughout. Thank you again, I'll be hoping for two more unhinged presentations in 2025 ^^'' Edit: I forgot! I began thinking of Aster hired High Schoolers/Freshmen-level college students to ghostwrite her books because there is no way one person is equally lazy and comes up with too many ideas to the point that nothing makes sense. Also there is no way she can publish books in such a short amount of time.
@littleduckbookclub6 күн бұрын
See, I don't think she has to. It's not actually unlikely for someone to write this much, this fast. Usually publishing takes longer because authors are expected to implement edits to make their books better but clearly none of this shit is getting proofread, so it can be pumped out much faster.

Even as a writer of a meandering mess of a web serial... Damn, this book sounds like a whole lot of "Stuff happening but nothing happens". I'm reminded of the Bart Simpson quote: "I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows." Plus, the hamfisted retconning is a bit wild here. Aster seems to be desperately trying to back-patch things but at the same time is dropping the balling on carrying everything else forward. While I'm not exactly surprised a third one got written, I am kind of surprised how little fanfare it got. You'd think they'd be trying to shill it a bit hard, but no trace of this thing has shown up on the usual literary radars. In one way, I can see why, but in another way, I'm kind of disappointed at the industry not aggressively shoveling crap for once. I kind of wanted to see how they'd spin this trash. On a side note: I wish I was infamous/famous enough to deserve my work getting the "Trying to Explain X to my Friend" treatment from you all. I'd consider it an honor.
@littleduckbookclub6 күн бұрын
The thing about serial fiction is that at least there it's not possible to go back and edit things but a novel can and should see some serious changes between first draft and publishing! But it somehow just doesn't happen to the Lightlark series... I'm also a little surprised how little fanfare there was, although perhaps there was a lot more advertising on tiktok or in romantasy specific spaces? No idea. But I think Nightbane also didn't get much of a marketing campaign, now that I think about it. People were still more invested in the insanity that is Lightlark but now the interest has moved on to the next bad booktok sensation.

@ViolettaSachra9 күн бұрын
Okay, it took me a bit, but I am done, and man, I have so many thoughts, were even to begin... I guess first: I was right, the presentation IS spectacular, love it, thank you so much!! Islas "Idea!" face is very funny, and I unironically like the drawings of Wraith and Lynx when they get a bit more detailed! Also the pokemon reference, yay, very cute :) Second, I need to get this out of my system, the blood pool was extremely gross, because wouldn't blood just coagulate, aka thicken?? I guess there's some magic stuff going on, but I couldn't shake the image of Isla jumping into a pool with blood in pudding consistency, yikes D: On a funnier note, I was so ready for the little pet snake Isla got to be the real traitor, I am upset that didn't happen. And who was the real traitor again, Soren or something? That felt so out of nowhere, did that character even do anything in this story beforehand? And I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, but I felt like Cleo was barely mentioned, when she was so driven by grief at the end of the last book and should have had a bigger part here, she was Grims war partner after all? And Azul is just here to share rings now....? Idk idk it felt really boring, like Aster didn't know what to do with them. Cannot believe Aster wrote the Isla-Island thing, that's gonna be so funny to convey in the spanish version :D Oh and the whole retcon of her parents death, nope, not buying it, stick to one story please! And why the hell did Isla not leave Terra in the prison, when she literally cackled evilly at her at the end of nightbane and called her stupid or something?? Isla was always super crazy powerful but her guardians fed her special metal so it suppressed her powers, but that wouldn't work anymore once Isla entered the centennial right, because she ate and was dressed independently of Terra and Poppy. She never had any unexplained outbursts of magic, so... ugh, it just makes little sense, no wonder Aster made her wear those bracelets to suppress her powers o.o (don't get me started on those, lazy!!) I btw share your headcanon that Horus (?) was still alive in the coffin and they just straight up murdered him, that was exactly what I thought when you explained the situation lmao Man there was so much weird stuff happening, i don't even know anymore. Still, looking forward to book 4, that's surely gonna be popcorn-worthy again :D Maybe it will all tie together in a beautiful knot at the end... but i doubt it. Thanks again for the long video and sorry for my long ramblings lul
@littleduckbookclub6 күн бұрын
The more you think about the blood pool the worse it gets T-T It didn't need to be like that... A lot of the reveals were just mostly underwhelming, which I suppose makes sense when the narrative itself doesn't make a lot of sense. It feels like every side character was pushed aside in favour of more scenes where Isla is stalking the night, killing random people or where she and Grim have sex. What I also wonder is where Cleo even got the idea that she could get her child back... If Lark is the one with the resurrection ability and she wasn't in Skyshade at the time, why did she and Grim believe that they could get their dead loved ones back in the other world? Many questions remain...The other nations aren't even really mentioned at all, who knows what the Starlings are up to. The "she was the one who killed her parents" is so stupid and makes no sense and you could not pay me enough to try and defend this publicly, that's how nonsensical it is. I'm also really curious about book 4 and what would even happen in there. Will we get Cronan as a new random love interest? Will we get a retcon and actually Lark wasn't evil and killing people for no good reason? Will Isla kill the Gods? Who knows! Alex Aster probably doesn't know yet either! What I'm also wondering about is what that second book is. I doubt it's book 5 so I'm low-key expecting it to be the whole saga from Grim's perspective which I can only imagine being extremely horny but also very boring and adding nothing to the story.
